Iacobus Gallus: Opus musicum II/1. De passione Domini nostri Iesu Christi

    No full text
From the very beginning, one of the most important and ambitious goals of the MAMS collection has been publication of the collected works of Iacobus Handl-Gallus in a modern transcription tailored to the needs of contemporary performers. The publication of his famous collection of motets, Opus musicum, consisting of four books containing a total of 374 motets, partially achieved this goal in 1990. The transcriptions and critical commentaries were prepared by Edo Škulj, and Gallus’s motets were published in thirteen volumes between 1985 and 1990. The edition is enriched by numerous facsimiles from Gallus’s original prints, published between 1586 and 1590 by the Prague printer Georg Nigrin (Jiří Černý). Gallus divided the second book of his Opus musicum (1587) into four sections, which have been retained in the MAMS edition. The first volume (II/1) consists of 4-, 5-, 6- and 8-part motets for the liturgy of Holy Week. The volume also contains three polyphonic settings of the Passions, two based on the Gospel of John and one on the Gospel of Matthew. The 2024 digitized post-edition is accompanied by a new preface and an introductory study by Dr Marc Desmet that summarizes and compiles all recent findings about the composer and his work.

Gallus assigned the fourth book of his Opus musicum (1590) to feasts of the Virgin Mary, the Apostles, the Martyrs, the Witnesses and the Holy Virgins. Gallus arranged the motets not according to the chronological order of the church year, but according to the number of voices. The third volume (IV/3) consists of 5-part motets for the feasts of the Mother of God and the Saints. The 2024 digitized post-edition is accompanied by a new preface and an introductory study by Dr Marc Desmet that summarizes and compiles all recent findings about the composer and his work.

    No full text
This Festschrift includes four commemorative essays, twenty-two scholarly contributions as well as an extensive bibliography of the art historian Dr Marjeta Ciglenečki’s work. In celebration of the seventieth birthday of a respected colleague, whose work spans the fields of university education, scientific research, museology and heritage preservation, her former collaborators, colleagues and students have contributed papers which range chronologically from antiquity to the present day. These contributions also cover all artistic disciplines and address every aspect of art historical work. The diversity of the contributions reflects the breadth of Dr Ciglenečki’s oeuvre, as many of them focus on topics that Marjeta Ciglenečki herself has explored or deal with the region of Ptuj, Maribor and Styria more generally, where she has conducted extensive research and made a particularly significant contribution to scholarship. The contributions are thus intended for a wide range of scholars and professionals – art historians, museum professionals, conservators, architects, historians, cultural historians, ethnologists, and theologians – though, at the same time, many of the topics discussed will undoubtedly also appeal to a broader readership.

    No full text
The historical source, the manuscript collection of Slovenian place names from Metelko’s Legacy, which is kept by the Slovenian National and University Library, has been published in two volumes. The first volume contains the transcription and translation of the German-Slovene lists of 3,178 place names from Upper Carniola, Lower Carniola and the Villach department of Carinthia from 1823, compiled by district clerks. The material is supplemented by a bilingual list of 446 place names, including towns, market towns, parishes, vicariates, local chaplaincies and the names of seigneuries, estates, small seigneuries, manors, castles and monasteries, all of which Metelko recorded in a small notebook. Volume 2 contains the localization of places and their identification with modern name forms, as well as a linguistic commentary on the name forms attested in the clerks’ lists and Metelko’s notebook, with references to older and more recent historical records. The names are arranged by seigneuries in the same order as in the original manuscript and are presented in four parallel columns: the modern Slovenian form, the genitive form, the Slovenian form from Metelko’s material, and the historical German form. For easier orientation within the name material, the book is accompanied by a comprehensive name index. The volume also includes Metelko’s additional instructions for recording the genitive forms of Slovenian place names. Druga knjiga vsebuje lokalizacijo krajev in identifikacijo s sodobnimi imenskimi oblikami ter jezikoslovni komentar imenskih oblik, izpričanih v pisarskih seznamih in v Metelkovem zvežčiču, z navedbo starejših in mlajših historičnih zapisov.

    No full text
Almost 130 years after the publication of Adolf Hauffen's ethnographic study and collection of Gottscheer songs, the book Pesemsko izročilo Kočevske ('The Folk Song Tradition of Kočevje area') has made the treasure trove that is the folk song tradition of the wider Kočevska region, mostly written in the Gottscheer dialect, available in Slovenian. In addition to the translation of the book Die deutsche Sprachinsel Gottschee. Geschichte und Mundart, Lebensverhältnisse, Sitten und Gebräuche, Sagen, Märchen und Lieder ('The German Language Island in Kočevska Region. History and Dialect, Living Conditions, Customs and Habits, Folktales, Fairy Tales and Folk Songs', 1895), the work also contains an article by the aforementioned author (from 1896), in which he published additional folk songs and information he received after the publication of his book. This is followed by nine scholarly-critical studies by seven authors, Peter Lozoviuk, Anja Moric, Marija Klobčar, Marjetka Golež Kaučič, Zmaga Kumer, Saša Babič and Helena Ložar-Podlogar, who examine the Gottscheer folk song tradition from ethnological, folkloristic and historical perspectives. They focus on the collection of Gottscheer folk songs that formed the core of Hauffen's monograph, but also offer broader critical reflections. The book is also the first translation of the entire folk song collection from any foreign language into Slovene.S knjigo Pesemsko izročilo Kočevske je skoraj 130 let po izidu etnografske študije in zbirke kočevarskih pesmi Adolfa Hauffna zakladnica pesemskega izročila območja širše Kočevske, zapisana večinoma v kočevarskem narečju, dostopna tudi v slovenskem jeziku.

Jurij Slatkonja (1456–1522). Od Kranjske do Dunaja

    No full text
The book by seven internationally renowned authors from the fields of history, musicology and art history deals with the life, work and portraits of Georg Slatkonia from Ljubljana, an ecclesiastical dignitary and organiser of Maximilian I’s court music chapel. The book is divided into three thematic sections. The first deals with Slatkonia’s life and career. Particular attention is paid to his local and social origins, the influence of his network of acquaintances on his career and his role after his consecration as Bishop of Vienna in 1513. The second part is dedicated to Slatkonia as a musician. The first chapter provides a historiographical overview of the writings on Georg Slatkonia as a musician and assesses his known compositions. This is followed by an account of the organisation of the imperial court chapel in Slatkonia’s time and an assessment of his role. The third chapter of this section provides an overview of musical activities in the territory of present-day Slovenia at the time of Slatkonia. The final section offers a study of Slatkonia’s portraits from the early modern period and an analysis regarding the authorship of his epitaph in Vienna Cathedral. All contributions are based on archival sources, some of which have been used for the first time in this publication. Slatkonia’s life and work are placed in both a national and a wider European context. Co-publisher Slovenska matica.Knjiga sedmih mednarodno uveljavljenih avtorjev s področij zgodovinskih, muzikoloških in umetnostnozgodovinskih znanosti govori o življenju, delovanju in upodobitvah Jurija Slatkonje iz Ljubljane, cerkvenega dostojanstvenika in organizatorja dvorne glasbene kapele Maksimilijana I. Delo je razdeljeno v tri tematske sklope. Prvi obravnava Slatkonjevo življenjsko in karierno pot.
