Dlaczego nie jesteśmy na drodze do uratowania Ziemi i nas samych? Pośrednie czynniki antropogenicznego wpływu na środowisko

In: Studia Ecologiae et Bioethicae. Warszawa : Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego, 2024. ISSN 1733-1218. Roč. 22, č. 4 (2024), s. 73-86.The growth of anthropogenic impacts on environment rapidly acelerated since 1950s and led to overshooting of several planetary ecological thresholds, decreasing the Earth´s ability to support our civilization. Even the concept of sustainability did not lead to recognition of necessary limits to this growth. These limits define the framework of our study on the roots of the current environmental crisis. Numerous studies have been devoted to environmental degradation, but analyses of its indirect driving forces are often fragmentary and confusing. We have attempted to provide a systemic assessment of three groups of indirect drivers by reflecting new physical ones and adding the paradigmatic drivers – such as the mechanical heritage and low reflection of life´s awesome complexity. A paradigm shift is required, as the current paradigm is incompatible with the reality of the Earth´s life support systems erosion. We also strived to contribute to much debated value-based category analysis. This underlines complexity of the driving forces of the crisis. Moreover, some absurd theories of how to come out of the crisis were mentioned. We stress the opportunity for Christians to put into practice the biblical messages to become caring stewards of nature in the God's image.VEGA 2/0132/21 Diverzita lúčnych a pasienkových biotopov Slovenska po dvoch dekádach v Európskej únii APVV-22-0397 Naturalizmus a konštruktivizmus ako konkurenčné alebo komplementárne program

Slovak adolescents' self-concept as a predictor of their school engagement

In: Psychological application and trends 2024. 1. vyd. Lisabon : inScience Press, 2024. ISBN 978-989-35106-6-7. ISSN 2184-2205. Pp. 542-546.A student's school engagement is a significant factor in his/her school success (Appleton et al., 2006; Simons-Morton & Chen, 2009; Wang, 2009). Student self-concept is also associated with school performance according to previous research (e.g., Marsh & Martin, 2011). The present study builds on the results of the investigation of the correlations between the overall self-concept of Slovak adolescents and their school engagement. However, its aim is to confirm the individual dimensions of adolescents' self-concept in the Piers-Harris sense in the role of predictors of their overall school engagement. Thus, the ambition of the research study is to contribute to the explanation of the construct of school engagement. The research sample consists of 1013 adolescents (AMage = 17.00, SDage = 1.27) from different regions of the Slovak Republic. ASCSS/Adolescents' Self-Concept Short Scale (Veiga & Leite, 2016) and SES-4DS/Student Engagement in Schools - Four-dimensional Scale (Veiga, 2016) were used as research instruments. Multiple regression analysis deepened the results of the correlational analysis and a statistically significant regression model explained approximately 45% of the adolescent school engagement variable. In the role of significant predictors in relation to school engagement, the model confirms three of the six dimensions of adolescents' self-concept in the Piers-Harris sense: behaviour, popularity, and intellectual status. The discussion focuses on finding parallels with the dimensions of the construct of school engagement (behavioural, affective and cognitive). The results of the research study (despite its limits: self-reports, data collection) can be used in setting up intervention programs oriented towards strengthening students' school engagement and secondarily improving their academic performance

Is there a difference in the education of generations across time?

In: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. Bristol : IOP Publishing, 2024. ISSN 1742-6588. Vol. 2715 (2024), pp. 1-8.An interesting reading tends to be a summary of the dominant characteristics of each generation, which can be found in scientific and vocational publications as well as in media with popularization texts. Very often, we also identify among them our own characteristics and qualities, or those of our peers, children, and possibly other descendants. It is natural that the development of science and technology has a significant role in shaping the personality profile of the members of each generation during the historical development of society (for example, from the "lost" generation to the "alpha" generation). This factor influences the content, methodological and didactic aspects of the teaching process, i.e. what and how to teach. The authors of the paper have worked on several aspects of the preparation of teaching materials and their use in school physics, often with overlap with other science subjects. One of these aspects is, for example, the need to influence the emotional side of the student in learning processes, which is an important prerequisite for more permanent "inscriptions" of information in the student's memory. For this process to work, knowledge of the dominant characteristics of the target group of students and the environment in which they grow up is essential.KEGA 031UMB-4/2022 Lifelong learning of physics teachers focused on the development of inquiry competencies of student

Metamorfózy prezývkových obyvateľských mien na Orave v priebehu polstoročia

In: Slovenská reč. - Bratislava : Slovenská akadémia vied, 2024. ISSN 0037-6981. Roč. 84, č. 2 (2024), s. 166-177.The article aims to show the developmental changes in the inhabitant nicknames in the Orava villages, which were systematically addressed for the first time by A. Habovštiak at the First Slovak Onomastic Conference in 1967. The newer forms of the inhabitant nicknames were obtained by extracting an extensive set of seminar papers written by students of Slovak Studies from the Faculty of Arts at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica and partly also from the Faculty of Arts at Catholic University in Ružomberok during the span of years 2000-2022. Several inhabitant nicknames maintain continuity from an earlier period, while some display a change in the interpretation of the motivational story; new nicknames were also observed that were not previously mentioned by A. Habovštiak

Contribution of protected areas to mitigate the effect of landscape fragmentation in Slovakia

In: Journal of Landscape Ecology. Praha : Česká společnost pro krajinnou ekologii, 2024. ISSN 1803-2427. Vol. 17, no. 1 (2024), pp. 47-63.The main aim of the research is to identify landscape fragmentation (LF) in Slovakia with special emphasis on the contribution of protected areas (PAs) to mitigate the effect of LF. Results are presented in the final raster output (10 m grid). The raster contains 490,321,151 individual 10 m raster grids, with the LF average value of 59.12 % (where 0 represents fragmented landscape, 100 represents fully connected landscape by natural or semi-natural ecosystems) on the national level. Most of the territory of Slovakia falls within the range of values 55 – 65 %, which confirms the presence of significant continuous unfragmented areas. Based on the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) statistics results, there is a positive correlation of lower LF within the PAs network (p < 0.05, Table 1) in comparison to the unprotected part of Slovakia. The results of geographically weight regression (GWR) proved a medium positive correlation (r2=0.36; r2adj=0.36; n=49,003), thus confirming to a certain extent the role of PAs in the mitigation of the effect of LF. On the other hand, the level of protection does not correlate significantly with fragmentation values, where a higher level of protection is not significantly connected with a lower level of LF. For each category of PA, individual statistics of quality and quantity of LF are estimated and subsequently compared with unprotected parts of Slovakia. The comparison of all PAs with each other resulted in 1,132 unique assessments. The overall average value of LF of unprotected parts is still rather high (56.42 %) and it shows that there are still significant areas existing, which are situated in unprotected parts of the country. Spatial analysis revealed, that these important parts are covering 93,065 hectares, and are variously spread across the whole of Slovakia. The average value of LF for these newly identified areas is 68.5 %. As output, the results of this research present a comprehensive national map of the level of LF and lists of PAs ranked according to the overall assessment of LF

Banská Bystrica : Vydavateľstvo Univerzity Mateja Bela Belianum, 2024. ISSN 2729-8213. Roč. 25, č. 1 (2024), s. 79-96.The fiscal and tax capacity of territorial governments represent important areas of theoretical and practical research in the framework of public finances. The article aims to evaluate and concentrate knowledge in the field of fiscal and tax capacity of local governments and methods of their measurement. This includes a theoretical synthesis of knowledge based on experiences and approaches in the framework of fiscal and tax capacity from different countries. The synthesis of scientific studies showed that differences in the revenue generation of municipalities are related to their fiscal and tax capacity. The diversity of tax bases and the different tax efforts of local governments with established tax powers within the applied tax policies bring about differences in revenue generation and differences in the structure of the revenue base of local governments, which also affects the quality of life of residents. In Europe, there is a clear dominance of the Scandinavian countries in terms of the weight of local government finances on public finances.VEGA 1/0290/22 Regionálna investičná pomoc ako determinant rozvoja podnikov a regiónov v S
