Hplc-Dad Method for the Analysis of Synthetic Dyestuffs in Historical Textile Objects in Istanbul Naval Museum
In this study, dyestuff analyses of 39 different historical textile artifacts consisting of wool, silk and linen fibers in different colors obtained from the Istanbul Maritime Museum were carried out. These objects were first analyzed considering that they contained only natural dyestuffs in their structures. The results showed, however, that natural dyes were present only in one of the examined samples. Therefore, the analysis was extended for synthetic dyes. For this purpose, a gradient HPLC-DAD method was developed using two solvents, tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate/ammonium acetate and tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate/methanol. Fifty-seven textile samples containing 25 red, 29 green, 1 yellow and 2 blue colored fibers were removed from the investigated objects, treated by the HCl extraction method and analyzed by the developed method. Concerning natural dyestuffs, only carminic acid was detected in a jacket from the Abdulaziz period (Ottoman Empire 1861-1876). The results also revealed that two of the studied samples have UV spectra similar to those of the synthetic dyestuffs Brilliant Blue FCF and Acid Red 52 (Sulforhodamine B). In addition, the historical textile objects were dated according to the information obtained from these results.Commission of Marmara University Scientific Research Projects BAPKO [SAG-C-DRP-030114-0009]This study ( Ph.D.) was supported by the Commission of Marmara University Scientific Research Projects BAPKO, project number SAG-C-DRP-030114-0009. Transaction Types in Cryptocurrencies
The cryptocurrency ecosystem has witnessed an explosive growth, and this study delves into the mechanisms that fuel this expansion. Focusing on airdrops, staking, farming, and coin burning, the research analyzes a vast dataset of transactions from the Ethereum and Binance Networks. This analysis sheds light on the strategic use of these tools by highlighting transactions that engage users and distribute rewards (e.g., airdrops, staking). Furthermore, the study investigates farming as a method to enhance market efficiency by providing liquidity, and coin burning as a strategy to manage token supply and potentially increase value through scarcity. While effective utilization of these mechanisms can bolster token value and project success, regulatory challenges remain. Ultimately, this study aims to raise public awareness of cryptocurrency transaction types and the associated risks. Although many researchers have studied illicit flows on cryptocurrency transactions, in literature we haven't confronted with any study regarding transaction types. By analyzing over 107 million transaction records, the research presents the distribution of these transaction types. With the analysis of the transaction types, the definitions of them, the statistical outputs from the more than 107 million transaction records from ERC20 and BEP20 blockchain systems and the analysis of some specific token types such as Pancake Swap and Shiba, this research is the first study to present an academic approach with statistical analysis. This study can provide investors with knowledge that safeguard them from the potential pitfalls of cryptocurrency transactions. Also, this study presents some basic statistics so as to understand main patterns of different types of transactions. © 2024 IEEE.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAK, (7230961); Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTA
A Comprehensive Assessment of the Cholinergic-Supporting and Cognitive-Enhancing Effects of <i>rosa Damascena</I> Mill. (damask Rose) Essential Oil on Scopolamine-Induced Amnestic Rats
Yigit Hanoglu, Duygu/0000-0003-1345-4768; Terali, Kerem/0000-0002-9964-6383Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by gradual loss of cognitive abilities (dementia) and is a major public health problem. Here, we aimed at investigating the effects of Rosa damascena essential oil (RDEO) on learning and memory functions in a rat model of amnesia induced by scopolamine, as well as on changes in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, M-1 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) expression, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the extracted brain tissues. Methods: The control, amnesia (scopolamine, 1 mg/kg/i.p.) and treatment (RDEO, 100 mu L/kg/p.o. or galantamine, 1.5 mg/kg/i.p.) groups were subjected to Morris water maze and new object recognition tests. AChE activity was assayed by ELISA, and M-1 mAChR and BDNF concentration changes were determined by western blotting. Also, using computational tools, human M-1 mAChR was modeled in an active conformation, and the major components of RDEO were docked onto this receptor. Results: According to our behavioral tests, RDEO was able to mitigate the learning and memory impairments caused by scopolamine in vivo. Our in vitro assays showed that the observed positive effects correlated well with a decrease in AChE activity and an increase in M-1 mAChR and BDNF levels in amnestic rat brains. We also demonstrated in an in silico setting that the major components of RDEO, specifically -citronellol, geraniol, and nerol, could be accommodated favorably within the allosteric binding pocket of active-state human M-1 mAChR and anchored here chiefly by hydrogen-bonding and alkyl-pi interactions. Conclusion: Our findings offer a solid experimental foundation for future RDEO-based medicinal product development for patients suffering from AD.Science Citation Index Expande
The Effectiveness of Blood Flow Restriction Training on Upper Extremity Muscle Strength: a Systematic Review
ATLI, ECENUR/0000-0002-0622-4799Objective This systematic review aims to investigate the effect of blood flow restriction training (BFRT) on upper extremity muscle strength in pathological conditions of the upper extremity musculoskeletal system or in healthy individuals. Materials and Methods This study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guideline statement. The randomized controlled studies which published from January 2000 to May 2022 were searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases. Inclusion criteria were healthy clinical population or musculoskeletal pathology related to the upper extremity, participants aged 18 and above, application of blood flow restriction to the arm, a randomized controlled study design, and publication in English. Additionally, the presentation of upper extremity muscle strength as an outcome measurement was required. The quality of the studies was evaluated using The Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. Articles that were non-randomized, inaccessible in full text, and scored 4 or below on the PEDro scale were excluded. Results Five studies were included with 219 participants. The included studies had PEDro scores ranging from 5 to 8, with an average score of 6.4. This review demonstrated a positive or neutral effect of BFRT on grip strength and shoulder strength. Conclusion Although some studies have reported positive effects of BFRT on upper extremity muscle strength, there is no conclusive evidence regarding the protocol to be used for increasing upper extremity muscle strength.Science Citation Index Expande
The Association of Demographic, Psychological, Social and Activity Factors With Foot Health in People With Plantar Heel Pain
Tayfur, Abdulhamit/0000-0001-7366-5212Background: Plantar Heel Pain (PHP) can be a debilitating musculoskeletal condition from which only 50% recover within a year due to poor understanding of the mechanisms explaining severity and predicting outcomes specific to PHP. Objective: To explore associations between biopsychosocial variables and the severity of people with PHP. Secondly, to determine what combination of self-reported factors distinguishes people with PHP from other foot pain (OFP). Methods: We collected data from 235 participants, including 135 (%57) PHP (age 44 +/- 12 years, 66% female) and 99 OFP (%43) (age 38 +/- 11 years, 57% female) using 5 demographic, 13 biomedical, 8 psychological, 3 social and 8 activity-related factors. These were tested in linear and logistic regression models. Results: Quality of life (QoL) (beta = 0.35; p < 0.001), education (beta = -0.22; p = 0.003), gender (beta = -0.20; p = 0.007), morning pain duration (beta = -0.18; p = 0.01) and disease duration (beta = -0.15; p = 0.040) were significantly associated with severity of PHP. The second model, without QoL, showed that having sensitisation (beta = -0.18; p = 0.002) and a higher level of morning pain (beta = -0.20; p = 0.01) are associated with severity. The logistic regression results revealed that people with PHP tend to have a systemic disease (OR = 3.34; 1.53-7.76), express more kinesiophobia (OR = 1.02; 1.01-1.14), are less likely to have previous injuries (OR = 0.40; 0.19-0.81), worse morning pain (OR = 1.02; 1.01-1.03) and standing pain (OR = 2.60; 1.39-4.87) compared to people with OFP. Conclusions: People with PHP have higher associated levels of a range of psychological, social and activity related factors than people with OFP. The findings highlight the importance of considering psychosocial assessments alongside physical examination.Science Citation Index Expande
Volatility in the Turkish Stock Market: an Analysis of Influential Events
This study aims to understand the triggers for volatility changes in the Turkish stock market, particularly in the context of the market's increased popularity among local retail investors, despite economic challenges like unstable growth, currency depreciation, and high inflation. Analysis covers the period from January 2009 to January 2023. Changepoint analysis was employed to detect significant changes in the volatility structure of daily market return rates. Events coincident with these identified dates are further investigated to assess their impact. Additionally, conditional volatilities are examined to gauge market sentiment. Findings reveal that events such as central bank policy rate decisions, nationwide political incidents (e.g., the Gezi protests and the 2016 coup attempt), and major global events (like the pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine) coincide with significant shifts in market volatility, typically leading to an increase. Notably, the frequency of the change dates escalated following the announcement of Turkey's new economic model, although many of these dates did not directly align with major events. High inflation and the new economic model appear to negatively impact market volatility. Findings offer valuable insights into the relationship between major events and stock market volatility. This understanding can assist authorities in implementing strategies to mitigate adverse effects and maintain an improved investment environment. It also opens avenues for proactive communication to manage investor expectations more effectively.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
