A Comparative Analysis of Xgboost and Lightgbm Approaches for Human Activity Recognition: Speed and Accuracy Evaluation
Human activity recognition is the process of automatically identifying and classifying human activities based on data collected from different modalities such as wearable sensors, smartphones, or similar devices having necessary sensors or cameras capturing the behavior of the individuals. In this study, XGBoost and LightGBM approaches for human activity recognition are proposed and the performance and execution times of the proposed approaches are compared. The proposed methods on a dataset including accelerometer and gyroscope data acquired using a smartphone for six activities. The activities are laying, sitting, standing, walking, walking downstairs, and walking upstairs. The available dataset is divided into training and test sets, and proposed methods are trained using the training set, and tested on the test sets. At the end of the study, 97.23% accuracy using the LightGBM approach, and 96.67% accuracy using XGBoost is achieved. It is also found that XGBoost is faster than the LightGBM, whenever the execution times are compared. © IJCESEN
Scottish National Identity in Contemporary Scottish Drama
The twenty-first century has witnessed significant changes that contributed to the changing nature of Scottish national identity, reflecting Scotland's evolving social, political, and cultural landscape. Since the last decade of the twentieth century there has been a rising tide of national self-awareness in Scottish literature, especially in drama and theatre where Scottish playwrights focus on the idea that Scotland's geography 'geology', landscape, history, and culture play a vital role in contributing to an individual's self-identity and the development of Scottish national identity. An awareness of identity that is reflexively present in the works of Stephen Greenhorn's Passing Places, Alistair Beaton's Caledonia and Linda Mclean's Glory on Earth. The three playwrights follow an approach to the representation of the Scottish nation that highly depends on its capability to negotiate its differences and the influences it receives in the sphere of politics and culture. The political and cultural agency is implied by using geography, history, culture, and various narrative techniques that pose a challenge to traditional literary techniques. The three texts depart from their literary tradition, transgressing internal borders. They represent the need for a voice or visibility in Scottish literature that expands the boundaries through their narratives in the engagement with the identity issue. The voice of Scottish national identity shifts from depth to diversity, flexibility, and non-exclusive construction. The awareness of Scottish national identity has become more dynamic in its construction, evolving, unstable and changes from time to time
Turkey's Foreign Policy Towards Russia: the Analysis of the Cooperation Between Two Arch-Rival Frenemies From 2009 To 2022
The main topic concern of this research is Turkish-Russians relations in general within the period that corresponds to 2009-2022-time span within the spectrum of neo-classical realism. Tukey and Russia, as the continuation of former empires Ottoman and Russian Empires respectively, have always been engaged in some kind of relationship, be that cooperative or conflicting, but most of which consists of catastrophic wars waged against each other. With collapse of the Soviet Union and even more significantly after the break-out of the Syrian civil war, the relations took a different track, which kind of compelled these two arch-rivals to cooperate rather than feed an enmity against each other. This turn in the course of Turkish-Russian relations is of huge geopolitical significance for the west, Turkey and Russia. Now we are talking about a situation in which Turkey and Russia are courting with each other despite the grave concerns uttered by the west. The bottom-line of this multi-scope cooperation may be the S-400 deal which was realized between these two countries despite serious objections from the NATO, most notably from the USA. This sue generis cooperation deserves renewed and careful attention because that much close relations have never been experienced by these two countries throughout their tumultuous history. This thesis tries to find out the dynamics of Turkish-Russian relations in the light of recent developments. The hypothesis of this thesis is that this relationship is less likely to turn into something like a strategic alliance because of deep geopolitical confrontation and 'historically-rooted culture of insecurity' along with some other reasons which are close integration of Turkish economy with west and deep security alliance of Turkey with the western powers. As to the methodology of the thesis, document analysis is adopted, examining the latest literature on the issue. The research is composed of four main parts apart from Introduction and Conclusion, which are Theoretical Framework, a Brief History of Turkish-Russian Relations and the Main Reasons for Russian-Turkish Cooperation, and Potential Obstacles to a Durable Cooperation between Russia and Turkey. This thesis proves that this relationship cannot be a long-term one and may not evolve into a strategic partnership for certain valid reasons
The Effect of Gamification on Brand Awareness: a Study of Retail Industry and Healthy-Living Applications
Rapid developments in digitisation have resulted in gamification (ie, the use of game elements and game mechanics in non-game areas) becoming more common and easy to apply in digital environments. This study examines the use of gamification in the field of marketing, specifically its effects on brand awareness. As the paper shows, gamification helps to establish important bonds between the brand, the company and the customer. In this context, the paper analyses brand awareness by means of the survey method. Due to the size of the study population, the scope of the study was narrowed to apps promoting healthy living and apps produced by the retail sector. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 400 respondents. The survey found that gamification has a positive effect on brand awareness (r = 0.55) and that attitude to gamified apps has a positive effect on brand awareness (r = 0.58). Certain demographic factors were also found to influence the use of gamified apps. © HENRY STEWART PUBLICATIONS 2050-0076 (2024)
Monkeypox: a Comprehensive Review of Virology, Epidemiology, Transmission, Diagnosis, Prevention, Treatment, and Artificial Intelligence Applications
zahedpasha, reza/0000-0001-7723-2692Monkeypox (Mpox), an uncommon zoonotic Orthopoxvirus, is commonly manifested by blisters on the skin and has a mortality rate of approximately 0-10%. Approximately two decades after the cessation of global smallpox vaccination, the number of confirmed cases of Mpox has been growing, making it the most common Orthopoxvirus infection. Therefore, in this narrative review, we aimed to shed light on recent advancements in the pathophysiology, transmission routes, epidemiology, manifestations, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of Mpox, as well as the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods for predicting this disease. The clinical manifestations of Mpox, including the onset of symptoms and dermatologic characteristics, are similar to those of the infamous smallpox, but Mpox is clinically milder. Notably, a key difference between smallpox and Mpox is the high prevalence of lymphadenopathy. Human-to-human, animal-to-human, and animal-to-animal transmission are the three main pathways of Mpox spread that must be considered for effective prevention, particularly during outbreaks. PCR testing, as the preferred method for diagnosing Mpox infection, can enhance early detection of new cases and thereby improve infection control measures. JYNNEOS and ACAM2000 are among the vaccines most commonly recommended for the prevention of Mpox. Brincidofovir, Cidofovir, and Tecovirimat are the primary treatments for Mpox cases. Similar to other viral infections, the best approach to managing Mpox is prevention. This can, in part, be achieved through measures such as reducing contact with individuals displaying symptoms, maintaining personal safety, and adhering to practices commonly used to prevent sexually transmitted infections. © This open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial 3.0 License (CC BY-NC 3.0).Emerging Sources Citation Inde
Volatility Spillover in the Turkish Financial Market: a Qvar Analysis
Purpose – The volatility spillover is crucial matter for policy makers and portfolio managers to understand risk transmission between financial markets to understand where potential loss and risk comes from. In this research, it is aimed to investigate the tail risk spillover among the BIST-100 stock index, TR 10-year bonds, USD-TL exchange rate, gold futures, and Brent petroleum in Türkiye. Design/Methodology/Approach – The quantile vector autoregressive (QVAR) model, recommended by Ando et al., (2022), is used in this study. The QVAR model is proposed method in the literature to capture the tail risk spillovers from very low to very high volatility in financial markets. The data is weekly frequency and spans from January 28, 2010, to December 8, 2023. The weekly volatility data is obtained from a formula that utilize daily maximum and minimum prices as described in Diebold and Yilmaz (2012). Findings – The output of this study indicates that the volatility spillovers between related markets differs across different quantiles. Other results reveal that stock, bond, and currency markets are net risk spillovers during extremely low and moderately volatile periods, but gold and oil are net risk receivers. However, USD/TL is the only risk-transmitter in times of excessive volatility. Moreover, the time-varying spillover analysis shows that the total spillover index hit records during the COVID-19 outbreaks. Discussion – The output of this study confirms the findings of previous studies that find the spillover index does not remain constant over different quantiles. The output of this study provides crucial insights to finance authorities and investors on the nature of market risk and strategies for its management
Live Like Cockroaches: a Homeless Immigrant's Struggle Leading To Stereotypification
The use of cockroaches as a metaphor to describe the conditions of immigrants in immigrant literature is a problematic and controversial topic. It is a form of dehumanization that reduces individuals to pests or insects and constitution of demeaning stereotypes and xenophobia. The use of this metaphor can be traced back to colonial and racist attitudes towards non-white, non-Western individuals who were often depicted as primitive, dirty, and inhuman. This view which was used to justify colonialism and segregation is still prevailing in contemporary society through media and cultural representations. In Rawi Hage's novel Cockroach (2008), the use of the cockroach as a metaphor is a central theme throughout the book. The novel tells the story of an unnamed Lebanese immigrant who is struggling to make a new life in Montreal, Canada. The protagonist sees himself as a cockroach, a resilient survivor that can adapt to any environment and cope with any hardship. The cockroach metaphor in this novel might be interpreted in several ways. On the one hand, it can be seen as an indicator of the protagonist's resilience and ability to survive in a hostile and challenging environment. Since the cockroach is known for its ability to survive in harsh conditions, the protagonist sees himself as embodying these traits. On the other hand, the use of the cockroach as a metaphor might also be seen as the representation of the maltreatment of immigrants in Western societies. The protagonist is often marginalized and discriminated, and his identification with the cockroach can be seen as a way of highlighting the way that immigrants are often seen as pests or insects by mainstream society. Thus, the aim of this chapter is to examine Rawi Hage's novel Cockroach in order to reveal the struggles of immigrants in a new country who try to survive although they face many problems, including isolation, discrimination, poverty, and cultural exclusion. © 2023 Peter Lang Group AG, Lausanne. Thermally Controlled Band Gap Tuning in Cuo Nano Thin Films for Optoelectronic Applications
Temperature dependency of band gap in CuO nano thin films has been investigated by virtue of transmission experiments at different temperatures. Structural and morphological characterization were achieved using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. Analysis on the XRD diffractogram revealed the presence of monoclinic structure for the CuO. Average crystallite size was determined as 17.8 nm. Absorption characteristics in between 10 and 300 K were presented in the wavelength range of 360-1100 nm. The band gap of the CuO was found to be similar to 2.17 eV at 300 K using Tauc and spectral derivative methods. This value increased to similar to 2.24 eV at 10 K. Both methods showed that the band gap extended with decreasing temperature. Temperature dependency of the band gap was studied using Varshni relation. The band gap at absolute temperature, variation of the band gap with temperature and Debye temperature were calculated as 2.242 +/- 0.002 eV, - 5.4 +/- 0.2 x 10(-4) eV/K and 394 +/- 95 K, respectively
Modeling of Kappa Factor Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines: Application To the Western Türkiye Ground Motion Dataset
The recent seismic activity on Turkiye's west coast, especially in the Aegean Sea region, shows that this region requires further attention. The region has significant seismic hazards because of its location in an active tectonic regime of North-South extension with multiple basin structures on soft soil deposits. Recently, despite being 70 km from the earthquake source, the Samos event (with a moment magnitude of 7.0 on October 30, 2020) caused significant localized damage and collapse in the Izmir city center due to a combination of basin effects and structural susceptibility. Despite this activity, research on site characterization and site response modeling, such as local velocity models and kappa estimates, remains sparse in this region. Kappa values display regional characteristics, necessitating the use of local kappa estimations from previous earthquake data in region-specific applications. Kappa estimates are multivariate and incorporate several characteristics such as magnitude and distance. In this study, we assess and predict the trend in mean kappa values using three-component strong-ground motion data from accelerometer sites with known VS30 values throughout western Turkiye. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) were used to build the prediction models. The effects of epicentral distance Repi, magnitude Mw, and site class (VS30) were investigated, and the contributions of each parameter were examined using a large dataset containing recent seismic activity. The models were evaluated using well-known statistical accuracy criteria for kappa assessment. In all performance measures, the MARS model outperforms the MLR model across the selected sites.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUBIdot;TAK)Open access funding provided by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkiye (TUB & Idot;TAK).
