Experimental Study on the Efficiency Improvement of a Forced Draft Wet Cooling Tower via Magnetic Fe3O4 Nanofluid and Optimized Packing
The thermal performance of wet cooling towers is often limited by the low heat transfer capacity of conventional working fluids and suboptimal packing designs. To address this challenge, this study presents an experimental investigation of a laboratory-scale forced-draft counterflow wet cooling tower. The effects of Fe3O4/water magnetic nanofluid, magnetic field orientation, and three types of packing geometries (splash and film fills) were evaluated under various flow conditions. Key performance parameters-including the Merkel number, thermal efficiency, outlet water temperature, and cooling range-were analyzed. Employing 0.15 wt% Fe3O4/water nanofluid under a magnetic field led to a 55 % increase in the Merkel number, a 37 % rise in thermal efficiency, a 14 % reduction in outlet temperature, and a 27 % improvement in cooling range compared to pure water. Among the tested packings, the splash type demonstrated the best performance due to enhanced droplet breakup and increased surface area, resulting in an average increase of 187 % in the Merkel number compared to towers without packing. This is the first experimental study to jointly assess the influence of magnetic nanofluid, magnetic field configuration, and packing type on wet cooling tower performance. These findings provide new insights for enhancing energy efficiency in cooling systems by utilizing advanced working fluids and optimized internal components.Science Citation Index Expande
Exploring the Link Between Sound Quality Perception, Music Perception, Music Engagement, and Quality of Life in Cochlear Implant Recipients
Background/Objectives: This study investigated the association between cochlear implant (CI) users' assessed perception of musical sound quality and their subjective music perception and music-related quality of life (QoL). The aim was to provide a comprehensive evaluation by integrating a relatively objective Turkish Multiple Stimulus with Hidden Reference and Anchor (TR-MUSHRA) test and a subjective music questionnaire. Methods: Thirty CI users and thirty normal-hearing (NH) adults were assessed. Perception of sound quality was measured using the TR-MUSHRA test. Subjective assessments were conducted with the Music-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire (MuRQoL). Results: TR-MUSHRA results showed that while NH participants rated all filtered stimuli as perceptually different from the original, CI users provided similar ratings for stimuli with adjacent high-pass filter settings, indicating less differentiation in perceived sound quality. On the MuRQoL, groups differed on the Frequency subscale but not the Importance subscale. Critically, no significant correlation was found between the TR-MUSHRA scores and the MuRQoL subscale scores in either group. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate that TR-MUSHRA is an effective tool for assessing perceived sound quality relatively objectively, but there is no relationship between perceiving sound quality differences and measures of self-reported musical engagement and its importance. Subjective music experience may represent different domains beyond the perception of sound quality. Therefore, successful auditory rehabilitation requires personalized strategies that consider the multifaceted nature of music perception beyond simple perceptual judgments.Emerging Sources Citation Inde
Nervus Medianus’a Dal Veren ve Musculus Corocobrachialis’i Delmeyen Nervus Musculocutaneus Varyasyonu; Olgu Sunumu
Effect of the Early Introduction of Trophic Donor Human Breast Milk on the Preservation of Postoperative Gut Functions in a Fasting Animal Model
Guvenc, B. Haluk/0000-0001-8025-1747; Kolayli, Fetiye/0000-0003-2474-4541Dietary restrictions, such as avoiding oral intake until postoperative ileus resolves, can result in negative nitrogen balance, weakened immune function, and impaired digestive system performance. This study investigates the efficacy of donor human breast milk (HM) in early trophic enteral feeding and its impact on gut functions during prolonged postoperative fasting in an animal model. Male Wistar rats were deprived of food for 48 hours with free water access. After a complete ileal transection and an end-to-end intestinal anastomosis, the rats were divided into three groups: prolonged fasting (PF), early trophic feeding with HM, and feeding with commercial formula (CF). Each group was further divided into 48-and 72-h postoperative subgroups. The study measured the number of colony-forming units in mesenteric lymph nodes, serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels, and histopathological data between groups. At postoperative 48 and 72 hours, the mean apoptotic index of HM group was significantly lower than in PF group ( P (c) 2025 Elsevier Inc. Optimization of the Air Pollution Mitigation Model Using Intuitionistic Fuzzy Trapezoidal Preference Relations and Grey Relational Analysis
Addressing the pressing issue of air pollution requires sophisticated decision-making frameworks that can effectively prioritize mitigation strategies. However, existing literature falls short in providing comprehensive models that integrate intuitionistic fuzzy trapezoidal preference relations (IFTrPRs) with robust ranking methods. This study bridges this gap by introducing a novel framework that synergizes IFTrPRs with Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) and projection methods to derive priority weight vectors and compare alternatives. A key contribution of this research is the development of an optimization model for determining priority weights from IFTrPRs, which ensures multiplicative consistency. By integrating this model with GRA and projection methods, our framework provides a robust decision-making tool that can accurately handle uncertain situations and provide reliable results. The proposed framework is demonstrated in a real-world air pollution mitigation scenario, showcasing its effectiveness and superiority over existing techniques. By integrating IFTrPRs with GRA, this study offers a pioneering approach to tackling environmental challenges, contributing to the development of more effective strategies for air pollution mitigation.Emerging Sources Citation Inde

The Relationship Between Respiratory Function, Functional Exercise Capacity, and the Ankle-Brachial Index in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease
Purpose: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study is to investigate the relation of respiratory function and functional exercise capacity with the ankle-brachial index (ABI) in patients with PAD. Method: The study adopted a cross-sectional design. The respiratory function was measured using a spirometer through respiratory function tests. The following values measured: Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 s (FEV1), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC ratio, 25 % Flow of Forced Vital Capacity (FEF25), 75 % Flow of Forced Vital Capacity (FEF75), and the average flow between 25 % and 75 % of Forced Vital Capacity (FEF25-75). Functional exercise capacity was assessed using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and ABI was measured. Results: The study included 95 patients with PAD (mean age: 52.0 +/- 8.3 years). The mean ABI value was 0.86 +/- 0.17. The participants walked an average of 374.59 +/- 82.16 m in the 6MWT. There were positive correlation between ABI and FEV1, FVC, PEF, 6 MWT (r(s):0.56, p < 0.001; r(s):0.39, p < 0.001; r(s):0.34, p:0.001; r(s):0.64, p < 0.001, respectively). The other respiratory function outcomes also demonstrated significant positive relations with ABI (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that increases in ABI values were associated with improvements in respiratory function and functional exercise capacity in patients with PAD. Evaluation of respiratory parameters in patients with PAD and the implementation of rehabilitation approaches aimed at improving respiratory function may positively contribute to the management of the disease. Development of an Enriched Aronia-Based Soft Candy Formulation in Accordance with Consumer Expectations
The main motivations for supplement intake included improving overall health, increasing energy and boosting immunity, with vitamin D being the most commonly preferred supplement. In the product development phase, four formulations containing coconut sugar, date powder and stevia in addition to the sucrose-containing control group were developed; pH, water soluble dry matter content, total phenol monomeric anthocyanin, proanthocyanidin contents and antioxidant capacity analyzes were carried out in the laboratory. The date powder formulation showed significantly stronger antioxidant potential and total phenol content, but lower proanthocyanidin and monomeric anthocyanin content (p<0.05). The stevia formulation was found to be more favorable in terms of nutrient content. Sensory analysis showed that the sucrose control group had significantly higher scores in all parameters, while the stevia formulation had lower scores (p<0.05 The sensory analysis results indicated that the formulation containing date powder achieved second place in terms of overall acceptability and outperformed the other formulations in terms of biochemical evaluation criteria. The study demonstrated that sociodemographic characteristics, dietary preferences, and health behaviors influence the use of food supplements. It was also concluded that an antioxidant-rich aronia-based food supplement flavored with date powder, due to its strong biochemical and sensory properties, would be a promising alternative in functional food development
Assessing Congenital Muscular Torticollis Using Myotonometry: A Novel Approach
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle properties in infants with Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT) using myotonometry and determine its sensitivity to changes following physiotherapy. Methods: Twentyfive infants (0-12 months) diagnosed with CMT participated in this study from May 2023 to February 2024. They underwent an 8-week physiotherapy program. Muscle tone, elasticity, and stiffness were measured using myotonometry, muscle strength by the Muscle Function Scale (MFS), and neck range of motion by an arthrodial protractor before and after treatment. Results: The mean age was 4 +/- 1.56 months. Significant differences in SCM tone and stiffness between affected and intact sides were observed pre-treatment (p0.05). Intragroup improvements were significant for muscle tone (p=0.005), elasticity (p=0.009), stiffness (p=0.009), strength (p=0.006), and neck range of motion (p=0.021). Muscle tone decreased by 19.65%, muscle stiffness by 24.99%, and muscle elasticity improved by 9.42%. Passive lateral flexion increased by 59.09% and passive rotation by 25.40%. Conclusions: SCM muscle properties differ between sides in individuals with CMT; however, myotonometry effectively detects improvements following physiotherapy, making it a valuable clinical evaluation tool. Nevertheless, the relatively small sample size should be taken into account when interpreting the findings.Science Citation Index Expande
Promoting Patients’ Empowerment in Rheumatic Diseases: The Perspective of the International Society of Behçet’s Disease Working Group on Patient Empowerment, Adherence to Therapy and Patients’ Education
oai:gcris.okan.edu.tr:20.500.14517/8541Behçet’s disease (BD) is a rare multisystemic vasculitis that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. Effective management of BD requires a patientcentred approach that empowers individuals to actively participate in their care. This work explores the importance of patient empowerment, adherence to treatment, and patient education in BD. The impact of BD on quality of life (QOL) is significant, affecting both physical and psychological well-being. QOL measures are essential in capturing the full burden of the disease from the patient’s perspective, helping guide interventions that can improve disease management. Moreover, treatment adherence remains a major challenge due to various factors, including medication complexity, fear of side effects, and patient perceptions of their health status. Empowerment strategies, including education and emotional support, are crucial to improving adherence and reducing healthcare costs. Empowering BD patients involves fostering a collaborative relationship between healthcare providers and patients, promoting shared decision-making and enhancing patients’ knowledge and skills to manage their condition. Patient education plays a crucial role in empowering patients by providing them with accurate information about the disease, treatment options, and self-management strategies. The International Society for Behçet’s Disease Working Group on Patient Empowerment, Adherence to Therapy, and Patient Education aims to address these issues by developing global strategies to empower BD patients, caregivers and healthcare providers. This initiative promotes collaboration across the BD community, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and serving as a model for similar efforts in other disease areas. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved
