Heidegger's Conception of Poetic Dwelling Through Appropriation of History

    No full text
This paper explores the significance of poetic dwelling in Martin Heidegger's later thought in terms of its relevance to the essence of truth and his notion of the fourfold as world's disclosure. Heidegger emphasizes that the poetic provides us with a better understanding of our modern era, which is notable by the oblivion of Being. He regards history as a homecoming, which manifests itself when we remember that we are in a dialogue with the destining of Being. After clarifying the relationship between poetic dwelling and appropriation of history whilst referring to Friedrich Holderlin's hymn, "The Ister" ("Der Ister"), this paper argues that according to Heidegger, the precondition of participating in history is learning to listen and respond to the address of Being; which is only possible via the poetic which enables us to feel home and genuinely dwell on this earth

Consumer Complaining Behavior in Hospitality Management

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of assertiveness, aggressiveness, and perceived risks on consumer complaining behavior (CCB) in the tourism and hospitality sector. This research utilized a quantitative methodology through the implementation of a two-stage study based on surveys. Study 1 examined the impacts of assertiveness, aggressiveness, and perceived risks on CCB in the context of low-quality summer vacation, while Study 2 further investigated the relationships in the research model by replicating the survey within the framework of high-quality summer vacation. The results were then analyzed through factor and regression analyses. Both of the studies demonstrated that assertiveness positively influences CCB directly and also indirectly via the mediating effect of perceived risks. It was found that aggressiveness positively influences CCB when consumers have high service quality expectations but when they have low expectations for service quality, it is insignificant

Sustainability of Engineered Rivers in Arid Lands

The water question emerged on the international agenda in the Euphrates–Tigris (ET) basin when the three riparian nations, namely Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, initiated major water and land resources development projects in the late 1960s. The political linkages established between transboundary water issues and nonriparian security issues also exacerbated the disagreements over water sharing and allocation. In 1987 and 1990, two bilateral Euphrates water sharing protocols were negotiated. They are acknowledged by all riparian states as being interim agreements. However, these bilateral accords failed to include basic components of sustainable water resources management, namely water quality management, environmental protection, and stakeholder engagement. In the early 1980s, the Euphrates–Tigris basin countries created an institutional framework, namely the Joint Technical Committee. However, they did not empower the committee with a clear and jointly agreed mandate. Instead, the riparian countries continued unilateral and uncoordinated water and land development ventures. Impacts of climate change add to the already complex list of management shortcomings. The basin is one of the most affected regions. The findings of science project significant decreases in the Tigris and Euphrates flows. Examining the water–food–energy nexus in the ET basin is important because there are serious pressures on the river system due to population growth, agricultural practices, hydropower development, and ecosystem mismanagement. We recommend that transboundary institutions should apply the nexus approach, which helps to identify key development drivers as well as to unpack and clarify the development challenges and necessary tradeoffs in the basin. Sustainability of water resources requires stability, cooperation, and peace. The sub-state level conflicts and illegal control of water resources and water infrastructure in the basin deprive people of access to sufficient clean water, energy, and food resources in Syria and Iraq. The prerequisites for establishing or restoring sustainability in a river basin include stability as well as establishing participatory, transparent, inclusive, and accountable governance structures

This project aims to understand the purchasing behavior of the consumers and make predictions about purchasing according to website metrics such as page values, bounce rates. An existing dataset is used in this project. This dataset is available in the collection of data from an e-commerce website by Google Analytics, which consists of 10 numerical and 8 categorical attributes coming from 12,330 sessions. The 'Revenue' attribute is used as the class label. The attributes that have high impact on the prediction are; "Administrative", "Administrative Duration", "Informational", "Informational Duration", "Product Related" and "Product-Related Duration". They represent the number of different types of pages visited by the visitor in that session and the total time spent in each of these page categories. The "Bounce Rate", "Exit Rate" and "Page Value" features represent the metrics measured by Google Analytics for each page in the e-commerce site. The "Special Day '' feature indicates the closeness of the site visiting time to a specific special day (e.g. Mother’s Day, Valentine's Day) in which the sessions are more likely to be finalized with a transaction.Since the purpose of this project is to predict potential purchasing using existing data, in the prediction part several machine learning algorithms such as decision trees, random forests will be applied to compare the models. The most suitable model will be chosen among these algorithms

Locus of Control, Need for Achievement, and Entrepreneurial Intention: a Moderated Mediation Model

    No full text
Applying social cognitive career theory (Lent, Brown, ; Hackett, 2002) to entrepreneurship, this paper addresses the effects of locus of control and need for achievement on entrepreneurial intentions, and whether the effects are mediated by entrepreneurial self-efficacy and vary according to sex. The participants were 111 students enrolled in the business administration program in Turkey. Using longitudinal survey data, the research model was tested with the moderated mediation procedure suggested by Hayes (2013). The findings showed that entrepreneurial self-efficacy mediated the relationship between locus of control and entrepreneurial intention, as well as the relationship between need for achievement and entrepreneurial intention. Moreover, the conditional indirect analysis showed that the effect of locus of control on entrepreneurial intention depended on sex, with the effect of locus of control being greater for men. By showing empirical evidence for the usefulness of social cognitive career theory to entrepreneurship, our research adds to current literature. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are discussed

Voluntary Simplicity: a Content Analysis of Consumer Comments

    No full text
Purpose -The voluntary simplification (VS) movement has stemmed from Western societies and gained momentum in the 1980s, but the trend has failed to become a primary perspective for most consumers. The accompanying concepts of conscious consumption, minimalism and accepting that sometimes “less is more” are still vivid in the digital era. The purpose of this study is to provide a deep and recent understanding of the consumer comments about minimalism in Turkey and examine their associations with the prominent themes in the VS literature.Design/methodology/approach -Consumer comments posted on online platforms were analyzed by content analysis and word frequency analysis.Findings -Consumer comments were in parallel to the themes in the VS literature and were classified under personal growth, material simplicity, sustainability, proper technology usage and self-sufficiency categories. Personal growth, material simplicity and sustainability were the first three dimensions mentioned. The prominent sub-themes that emerge from data were psychological well-being, inner peace, freedom, meaningful experiences and getting rid of belongings. A word frequency analysis pointed out that “life” and “owning” were the evident words in the personal growth category, “purchasing things” were mostly mentioned in the material simplicity category and “plastic litter” and “excessive consumption” were the prominent concerns in the sustainability category.Originality/value -VS required further research in different national contexts. Besides, an analysis of the dimensions of VS was needed. This study contributes by providing recent and rich findings from a developing country, connecting them with the VS themes in the literature and suggesting a conceptual framework enriched by sub-themes that emerged from data

Sustainable Marketing Practices in European Airlines

    No full text
In recent years, it is observed that consumers behave more environmentally due to the increasingly negative effects of global climate change. As a result of this situation, it can be said that there is an increase in the sustainable marketing activities of airlines. Studies on the sustainable marketing activities of airlines and the attitudes of passengers towards the activities of these airlines are relatively few in our country. Therefore, in this study, while the sustainable activities of airline companies operating in Europe were examined, Turkish and European passengers the general environmental awareness and attitudes towards green airlines were also examined. A questionnaire that included questions about the environmental awareness, flight frequency, flight purposes, airline preferences, and demographic information of the participants was applied to traveling passengers in Turkey and Europe. At the end of the study, the passengers' attitudes towards green airlines were examined and it was observed that there was a similarity in the attitudes of Turkish and European passengers towards green airlines. In addition, it has been observed that the demographic characteristics of the passengers such as their social, and cultural and economic characteristics are also effective in purchasing an eco-friendly product or service. Furthermore, the study found that price is a very important factor in the passengers' choice of green service. Finally, at the end of the study, some suggestions were made to contribute to the sustainable marketing activities of airlines
