'Improve the Law' as a Judicial Duty on the Borderlines of Free Speech: Judges as Responsible Epistemic Agents3
This paper discusses judicial duty of improving the law on epistemic grounds and claims in that regarding this obligation, it is possible to give a place to free speech from an epistemic point of view. As a requirement of having epistemic agency, judges like other human beings have epistemological responsibility. Different from the others' responsibility, judges' responsibility is connected to their duty of improving the law, which is required by their job as well as the idea of the rule of law and judicial professional principles. Judges should improve the law's capacity to guide the conduct of its citizens, who are obligated to obey the law. Improving the law also improves the delivery of justice. The ways of legal interpretation and justification are important to improve it. While applying the law, judges can find the law unclear or they may encounter some norm conflicts. In these cases, they should resolve them to keep the law 'legally in good shape', which should meet epistemological requirements. When fulfilling this obligation, judicial free speech on epistemic grounds should not be limited
A critical study on sustainability within environmental assessment methodologies: Evaluating Volu-te in search of an alternative vision in architecture
This thesis focuses on the evaluation of sustainability in architecture and the environmental assessment methodologies as its tools. These methodologies act as measuring mechanism of sustainability of the architectural product; however, they also work as a wheel of the current capitalist system by labelling and certification requirements. Therefore, this study aims to focus on evaluating ecological impact and financial stress on the project. It shows that BREEAM certification adds a triple amount of project budget and Passive House certification adds double the amount of the total cost of the project. In this evaluation Volu-te has been used as an architectural product to discuss and make the cost effect of these certification systems on micro scale living projects
Müşteri metrikleri üzerinden segmentasyon ve kayıp tahmini
In this study, it is aimed to predict whether customers operating in the factoring sector will continue to trade in the next three months after the last transaction date, using data-driven machine learning models, based on their past transaction movements and their risk, limit and company data. As a result of the models established, Loss Analysis (Churn) of two different customer groups (Real and Legal factory) was carried out. It was estimated by the XGBoost model with an F1 Score of 74% and 77%. Thanks to this modeling, it was aimed to increase the retention rate of customers through special promotions and campaigns to be made to these customer groups, together with the prediction of the customers who will leave. Thanks to the increase in retention rates, a direct contribution to the transaction volume on a company basis was ensured
Extension of Capital Budgeting Techniques Using Interval-Valued Fermatean Fuzzy Sets
Capital budgeting requires dealing with high uncertainty from the unknown characteristics of cash flow, interest rate, and study period forecasts for future periods. Many fuzzy extensions of capital budgeting techniques have been proposed and used in a wide range of applications to deal with uncertainty. In this paper, a new fuzzy extension of the most used capital budgeting techniques is proposed. In this content, first interval-valued Fermatean fuzzy sets (IVFFS s) are defined, and the algebraic and aggregation operations are determined for interval-valued Fermatean fuzzy (IVFF) numbers. The formulations of IVFF net present value, IVFF equivalent uniform annual value, and IVFF benefit-cost ratio (B/C) methods are generated. To validate the proposed methods, proposed formulations are illustrated with a hypothetical example, and the results are compared with classical fuzzy capital budgeting techniques
Architectural Design Research in Small Practices
There has been a recently growing interest by architects in practice-based research and the impact of research. At the same time, several post-graduate architecture programmes with practice-led research agendas were founded. This shift towards architectural design research is analysed using the notions of “process-driven research”, “output-driven research” and “impact”. The study aims to investigate and unveil the link between graduate programmes and graduates with a research interest and to test the tripartite model of “process-driven research”, “output-driven research” and “impact” in the context of small architectural practices. The study uses a qualitative and exploratory research approach that includes 11 in-depth interviews conducted in 2020, during the first nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in the United Kingdom (UK) selected interviews were architects representing (1) members or alumni of practice-related graduate architecture programmes in London and (2) founders of London-based small architectural practices within the last decade. While focussing on the London context, the paper offers transferable insights for the key potentials of practice-led design research in small architectural practices and the actions that might improve research practice. This paper addresses a lack of studies on how design research differs between diverse types and sizes of architectural firms, why emerging small architectural practices increasingly engage with research and how this shapes their practice. This knowledge is important to fully understanding architectural design research and its strengths or weaknesses
Kadınlarda Baba Bağlanmasından Evlilik Doyumuna Giden Yollar: Öz Güven ve Öz Şefkatin Seri Aracı Rolleri
Attachment theory proposes that childhood caregiver-child attachment may affect partner attachment in adulthood. It is also known that childhood caregiver-child attachment may have a predictive role in predicting marital satisfaction. Self-confidence and self-compassion are essential emotional requirements for women, and their deficiencies may negatively affect their well-being. Therefore, this study aims to examine the serial mediator roles of self-confidence and self-compassion in the relationship between women's paternal attachment and marital satisfaction. The study sample consisted of 425 married women who are 18 and 69 years oldu and had not lost their father before the age of 16 (Mage = 35.44; SDage = 7.58; minage = 18, maxage = 69). Demographic Information Form, Dual Adjustment Scale, Mother and Father Attachment Scale II Father Form, Women's Self-Confidence Scale and Self-Compassion Scale" were utilized in the research. In order to test the main hypotheses of the research, a Serial Multiple Mediation Variable Analysis (Model 6) was performed via the Hayes PROCESS Macro. The findings revealed that women more securely attached to their fathers received more satisfaction from their marriages through self-confidence and self-compassion. The results were discussed within the scope of the related literature, and suggestions for research and practice were presented to the researchers and practitioners in the field.
Turkiye's Water Security Policy: Energy, Agriculture, and Transboundary Issues
Water security refers to the availability of adequate quantities and qualities of water for societal needs and resilient ecosystems in the context of current conditions and future global change. Achieving water security is directly linked to food and energy security, protecting and preserving eco systems, and addressing key vulnerabilities and risks from climate change. Good water governance –including transboundary cooperation– is a crit ical feature of any effort to achieve water security. Yet the concept of water security remains abstract and broad. In an attempt to make the concept of water security-relevant in practice, this paper delineates Türkiye’s water se curity policy and practices through institutional and cross-sectoral (energy and food) analysis. Specific attention is paid to Türkiye’s transboundary water security policies
Köpek Gezdirici Segmentasyonu
In this study dog walkers were separated into clusters according to walkers' walk habits. Due to the fact that the distributions were non-normal, normalization algorithms were applied before the onset of clustering. After normalizing, K Means algorithm and Gaussian Mixture Models used for finding optimum cluster count. According to these clusters, walkers' consecutive months separated to follow-up their behavioral traits. This part of the study adds value to the project to examine walkers' behaviors closer
Missing the Good Old Days: Investigating Outgroup Attitudes Through Collective Nostalgia and Global Identification
Collective nostalgia is a group-based emotion that refers to the longing for the “good old days” of one's ingroup. Research shows that collective nostalgia usually benefits relationships with other in-group members, while hampering intergroup relations. However, this depends on the past remembered. Moreover, global identification predicts positive intergroup relations, yet this depends on whether the target group is perceived to be aligned with a global culture. Accordingly, we tested how collective nostalgia and global identification can then be linked to inclusionary vs. exclusionary outgroup attitudes in Turkey in relation to Kurds, Armenians, LGBTQ+ individuals and Syrian refugees. The results showed (N = 1090) that collective nostalgia was related to positive attitudes towards Kurds, Armenians and gay men, whereas it was negatively related to attitudes towards Syrian refugees. Moreover, contrary to expectations, we found that global identification predicted positive attitudes towards all outgroups. These findings are not surprising given the changing political climate and increasing intergroup conflict in Turkey. We speculate that the meaning attributed to the “good old days” of Turkey predicted these positive attitudes except for Syrian refugees who are perceived to be today's problem. Overall, the relationship between nostalgia and outgroup attitudes are more complex than research has so far shown, and the content of the past remembered might be important to understand this relationship
How the Cephei E-Course Syllabus Design Was Developed and Implemented
While the digitalization of education has been around since the 1990s, it is only since the Covid-19 pandemic that it has really taken hold in education, when universities were forced to rapidly move online and traditional patterns of teaching were no longer viable. This pushed universities to provide a blended learning environment drawing on technologies that our students, as digital natives, had already been using on a daily basis for some time. However, blended learning is only effective if underpinned by tried and tested learning frameworks—something that many universities were not prepared for when the shift to online learning took place. The Cooperative e-learning Platform for Industrial Innovation (CEPHEI) however, was already prepared and ready for this shift, as from 2017 it had been working on the development of an e-learning platform with the aim of digitizing education while also integrating the reality of professional innovation activities into the context of education according to the demands of industry. To achieve this aim, one of the first phases of the project was to identify key learning frameworks for e-course syllabus design, based on existing research, that could be used to provide recommendations for instructors in the development of their CEPHEI courses. This chapter presents the culmination of this process and provides a framework that can be used by instructors or institutions wishing to design e-learning courses. To make these frameworks tangible for the reader, examples are given throughout the chapter from an undergraduate environmental engineering course in a civil engineering department. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022
