Staying cool in France: an extensive survey of summer comfort, natural home cooling practices and emerging air conditioning use in the French residential sector
International audienceAccording to the International Energy Agency, over the next three decades, the use of air conditioners is set to soar, becoming one of the top drivers of global electricity demand. In France, as summer heatwaves become more frequent, the residential air conditioners installation rate doubled in the last ten years, bringing the total share of equipped dwellings to 25 % in 2021. To tackle the increase in energy consumption and changes in seasonality that could result from this trend in the future, we need a better understanding of current cooling practices. So far in this country, while heating consumption in winter caught all the light, little was known of energy consumption in summer. This paper offers an analysis of French households’ summer cooling practices based on a unique representative survey of 8,000 households, asked about their building and equipment, comfort, everyday natural ventilation and shading actions, and cooling appliances usage. We show how the diversity of summer comfort and temperature perception depends on building features, location, and heat waves. Natural cooling is still more frequent than the use of air conditioners. During summer 2021, most people regularly opened windows in the night and morning, and closed shutters in the middle of the day, while only half of the households with air conditioners used them in addition to natural cooling. Air conditioners use rates and set temperatures depend on comfort perception and the types of cooling equipment. Air conditioning is mostly occasional and space specific, as opposed to the norm of constant cooling that can be found in other parts of the world. Altogether, this detailed description of current cooling practices, their interactions and drivers, allow to anticipate a limited rise of this demand, shall people keep on their natural ventilation and shading actions
International audienceWithin the framework of occupational health and safety regulations, employees equipped with cardiac active implantable medical devices (AIMD), such as pacemakers (PM) or implantable defibrillators (ICD), constitute a group of individuals at particular risk when exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMF), necessitating precautions against the potential hazards posed by electromagnetic interference (EMI). This paper describes a methodology for assessing the risks faced by employees with pacemakers exposed to EMF, aligning with the EN 50527-2 standards. We present two case studies of two workers bearing pacemakers, aiming to provide practical insights into conducting risk assessments.
What's behind the label: how an EPC label change hides the full range of possible retrofits
International audienceThe French Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is used to define long-term energy performance targets for residential buildings: improving the energy label to at least the B label. However, these objectives described in terms of EPC label do not allow us to describe and quantify the extent of energy renovation that is required. The aim of this study is to explain the kind of retrofit and its cost using a statistical approach, with two explanations: the nature of the technical measures and their cost. As an example, we will present the results for achieving high-efficient renovation (label A or B) for all the initial EPC labels. To do this, we use the French EPC method in its 2021 version to determine all the possible combinations of retrofit package described as compatible with all the possible EPC label changes. For each retrofit package, the calculation determines the energy consumption after retrofit, based on the standard EPC calculation, the new energy label obtained, and the investment required per retrofit measure. To study label changes, the calculations are based on 2,300 homes described in a public survey. With a maximum of 8 retrofit measures per renovation package studied, we have a combination leading to a total of around one million calculations for all the dwellings studied. We then carry out a statistical study of the costs of the retrofit package calculated in this way.Overall, the cost of high-efficient renovation is in the range of €200 to €350/m² of living space (direct cost), depending on the type of property, the initial EPC class and the final level achieved. As expected, the lower the initial performance of the building, the higher the cost of high-performance renovation. For given label changes, there is therefore a "home retrofit package" configuration for which the investment costs are minimal and configurations with very high costs, but which correspond to rare combinations. The knowledge of what is behind the EPC label change clarifies energy efficiency policy objectives in terms of technology and the type of retrofit possible and/or necessary, particularly for the building industry and the introduction of targeted financial incentive
International audienceChlorine 36 (Cl) is a radionuclide of natural and anthropogenic origin, mainly used as a tracer in geochemical studies. Owing to analytical constraints and its low environmental levels, knowledge of Cl behavior in the environment is still very limited. In this study, we use environmental measurements to report for the first time the wet deposition fluxes of Cl downwind an anthropogenic source, the Orano nuclear reprocessing plant, which chronically emits Cl into the environment. Measurements of Cl in rainwater samples at our study site were 1–2 orders of magnitude above the environmental background. The isotope ratios Cl/Cl of the samples and the Cl content in the rainwater averaged 2.3x10 at.at and 1.7x10 at.l respectively. A decrease in these levels was observed 20 km away from the study site, outside the plant's gas plume, indicating that the marking of Cl on the study site is related to the plant discharges. Over the sampling period, wet deposition fluxes at the study site averaged 3.4x10 at ms, with significant values measured when precipitations scavenge the plant's gas plume down onto our study site. Analysis of these fluxes also revealed the presence of a significant rainout phenomenon in the study area. These results provide new data on the wet deposition flux of Cl and will thus enable better assessment of impact studies in a context of decommissioning or accidents involving nuclear power plants.
Many engineering applications and scientific discoveries rely on faithful numerical simulations of complex phenomena. These phenomena are transcribed mathematically into Partial Differential Equation (PDE), whose solution is generally approximated by solvers that perform intensive computation and generate tremendous amounts of data. The applications rarely require only one simulation but rather a large ensemble of runs for different parameters to analyze the sensitivity of the phenomenon or to find an optimal configuration. Those large ensemble runs are limited by computation time and finite memory capacity. The high computational cost has led to the development of high-performance computing (HPC) and surrogate models. Recently, pushed by the success of deep learning in computer vision and natural language processing, the scientific community has considered its use to accelerate numerical simulations. The present thesis follows this approach by first presenting two techniques using machine learning for surrogate models. First, we propose to use a series of convolutions on hierarchical graphs to reproduce the velocity of fluids as generated by solvers at any time of the simulation. Second, we hybridize regression algorithms with classical reduced-order modeling techniques to identify the coefficients of any new simulation in a reduced basis computed by proper orthogonal decomposition. These two approaches, as the majority found in the literature, are supervised. Their training needs to generate a large number of simulations. Thus, they suffer the same problem that motivated their development in the first instance: generating many faithful simulations at scale is laborious. We propose a generic training framework for artificial neural networks that generate data simulations on-the-fly by leveraging HPC resources. Data are produced by running simultaneously several instances of the solver for different parameters. The solver itself can be parallelized over several processing units. As soon as a time step is computed by any simulation, it is streamed for training. No data is ever written on disk, thus overcoming slow input-output operations and alleviating the memory footprint. Training is performed by several GPUs with distributed data-parallelism. Because the training is now online, it induces a bias in the data compared to classical training, for which they are sampled uniformly from an ensemble of simulations available a priori. To mitigate this bias, each GPU is associated with a memory buffer in charge of mixing the incoming simulation data. This framework has improved the generalization capabilities of state-of-the-art architectures by exposing them during training to a richer diversity of data than would have been feasible with classical training. Experiments show the importance of the memory buffer implementation in guaranteeing generalization capabilities and high throughput training. The framework has been used to train a deep surrogate for heat diffusion simulation in less than 2 hours on 8TB of data processed in situ, thus increasing the prediction accuracy by 47% compared to a classical setting.
Global change alters coastal plankton food webs by promoting the microbial loop: An inverse modelling and network analysis approach on a mesocosm experiment
International audienceMarine organisms are currently, and will continue to be, exposed to the simultaneous effects of multiple environmental changes. Plankton organisms form the base of pelagic marine food webs and are particularly sensitive to ecosystem changes. Thus, warming, acidification, and changes in dissolved nutrient concentrations have the potential to alter these assemblages, with consequences for the entire ecosystem. Despite the growing number of studies addressing the potential influence of multiple drivers on plankton, global change may also cause less obvious alterations to the networks of interactions among species. Using inverse analyses applied to data collected during a mesocosm experiment, we aimed to compare the ecological functioning of coastal plankton assemblages and the interactions within their food web under different global change scenarios. The experimental treatments were based on the RCP 6.0 and 8.5 scenarios developed by the IPCC, which were extended (ERCP) to integrate the future predicted changes in coastal water nutrient concentrations. Overall, we identified that the functioning of the plankton food web was rather similar in the Ambient and ERCP 6.0 scenarios, but substantially altered in the ERCP 8.5 scenario. Using food web modelling and ecological network analysis, we identified that global change strengthens the microbial loop, with a decrease of energy transfer efficiency to higher trophic levels. Microzooplankton responded as well by an increased degree of herbivory in their diet and represented, compared to mesozooplankton, by far the main top-down pressure on primary producers. We also observed that the organisation of the food web and its capacity to recycle carbon was higher under the ERCP 8.5 scenario, but flow diversity and carbon path length were significantly reduced, illustrating an increased food web stability at the expense of diversity. Here, we provide evidence that if global change goes beyond the ERCP 6.0 scenario, coastal ecosystem functioning will be subjected to dramatic changes
Modeling long-term transfers of radiocesium in farmland under different tillage and cover crop treatments
International audienceThe 2011 nuclear accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) prompted inquiries about the long-term transfer of Cesium-137 (137Cs) from soil to agricultural plants. In this context, numerical modeling is particularly useful for the long-term evaluation of the consequences of agroecosystem contamination. Agriculturalpractices, such as tillage and cover cropping, play key roles in 137Cs recycling in agroecosystems. In this study, we used 10-year monitoring data to develop a dynamic model to predict 137Cs redistribution (via uptake, litterfall, translocation, and percolation) under different tillage (no-tillage, NT; rotary cultivation, RC; moldboard plow, MP) and cover crop (rye; hairy vetch; fallow weed) treatments. The verification exercise and assessmentresults indicated the model's reliability, as the temporal dynamics of predicted values agreed with observed values. Tillage significantly influenced the 137Cs distribution in soil, thereby decreasing plant uptake of 137Cs, whereas cover crop exerted a minimal effect on 137Cs cycling. Furthermore, while the 137Cs concentrations in soybean grain under RC and NT treatments were comparable 62 years after the FDNPP accident, the concentrationunder MP treatment remained consistently the lowest. Despite natural decay being the main cause of the decreased global 137Cs level in the agroecosystem, with minimal losses from percolation to deeper soil layers and soybean harvesting, adopting an appropriate tillage practice was shown to promote a long-term reduction of 137Cs concentration in crops. Finally, to improve the model's accuracy, further research should consider incorporatingthe effects of soil properties and extreme weather events on 137Cs flow into the model, as these factors are essential for realizing improved agroecosystem predictions
Entropic Lower Bound of Cardinality for Sparse Optimization
We introduce a family of cardinality's lower bounds, defined as ratios of norms. We prove that the tightest bound of the family is obtained as a limit case, and involves a Shannon entropy. We then use this entropic lower bound in sparse optimization problems to approximate cardinality requirements. This provides a nonlinear nonconvex relaxed problem, which can be efficiently solved by off-the-shelf nonlinear solvers. In the numerical study, we focus on the case where the optimization is performed on the simplex, and where the classical l1 penalization does not yield sparse solution. The Finance Index Tracking problem is taken as an example and illustrates the efficiency of the proposed approach
Generalized impedance boundary conditions with vanishing or sign-changing impedance
International audienceWe consider a Laplace type problem with a generalized impedance boundary condition of the form ∂_νu = −∂_x(g∂_xu) on a flat part Γ of the boundary. Here ν is the outward unit normal vector to ∂Ω, g is the impedance function and x is the coordinate along Γ. Such problems appear for example in the modelling of small perturbations of the boundary. In the literature, the cases g=1 or g=−1 have been investigated. In this work, we address situations where Γ contains the origin and g(x)=1_{x>0}(x)x^\alpha or g(x)=−sign(x)|x|^\alpha with \alpha≥ 0. In other words, we study cases where g vanishes at the origin and changes its sign. The main message is that the well-posedness in the Fredholm sense of the corresponding problems depends on the value of \alpha. For \alpha∈ [0,1), we show that the associated operators are Fredholm of index zero while it is not the case when \alpha=1. The proof of the first results is based on the reformulation as 1D problems combined with the derivation of compact embedding results for the functional spaces involved in the analysis. The proof of the second results relies on the computation of singularities and the construction of Weyl's sequences. We also discuss the equivalence between the strong and weak formulations, which is not straightforward. Finally, we provide simple numerical experiments which seem to corroborate the theorems
