A robust preconditioner for Thermo-Hydro-Mechanics problems with a second gradient of dilation regularization
National audienceThe topic of this work is the modeling of a deep geological disposal facility built in a clay-based host rock, resulting in the solution of a nonlinear thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) problem with a second gradient of dilation regularization. The objective is to find a robust iterative solver for the system of equations after linearization. Numerical results reflect the good performance of the proposed preconditioner that shows mesh size independence and parameter robustness
International audienceHenri de Lacaze-Duthiers (1821-1901), a famous 19th-century professor of zoology, is known as a pioneerof experimental zoology, for his teaching at the Muséum and Sorbonne, and for founding the Roscoff and Banyuls-sur-Mer marine stations. But he also stood out for his naturalistic drawings of marine fauna. Whereas some of his colleaguesgave in to the temptation to embellish the results of their observations, he favored a particularly precise depiction ofmarine creatures. The meticulous details of his drawings reveal crucial anatomical features of marine organisms, andhave thus contributed to the advancement of knowledge about marine biodiversity. But the aesthetics of these drawingsgo far beyond their scientific vocation, and are much admired today. The finesse of the line, the care taken with shading, the richness of the colors and the elegance of the forms convey the artistic emotion of their creator, fascinated by thebeauty of the creatures he depicted. Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers was also an experimenter in improving scientific illustrationtechniques, as revealed by his experiments in the use of animal-derived purple color and chromolithography for scientificpublishing. He also innovated in the scientific illustration of his lectures, taking an interest in projection devices, andstrongly supported the development of scientific photography. Henri de Lacaze-Duthiers thus finds his place among thescientists of the 19th century recognized not only for their taste for new media shared by artists and scientists, but also forthe aesthetic quality of their work. Discovering his work invites us to rediscover with emotion man's vanished connectionwith nature, which these early explorers so powerfully felt and so well expressed in their drawings. Rapid and Noise‐Resilient Mapping of Photogenerated Carrier Lifetime in Halide Perovskite Thin Films
International audienceHalide perovskite materials offer significant promise for solar energy and optoelectronics yet understanding and enhancing their efficiency and stability require addressing lateral inhomogeneity challenges. While photoluminescence imaging techniques are employed for the measurement of their opto-electronic and transport properties, going further in terms of precision requires longer acquisition times. Prolonged exposure of perovskites to light, given their high reactivity, can substantially alter these layers, rendering the acquired data less meaningful for analysis. In this paper, a method to extract high-quality lifetime images from rapidly acquired, noisy time-resolved photoluminescence images is proposed. This method leverages concepts of the field of constrained reconstruction and includes the Huber loss function and a specific form of total variation regularization. Through both simulations and experiments, it is demonstrated that the approach outperforms conventional pointwise methods. Optimal acceleration and optimization parameters tailored for decay time imaging of perovskite materials, offering new perspectives for accelerated experiments crucial in degradation process characterization are identified. Importantly, this methodology holds the potential for broader applications: it can be extended to explore additional beam-sensitive materials, and other imaging characterization techniques and employed with more complex physical models to treat time-resolved decays.</div

Sensitivity Analyses of a Multi-Physics Long-Term Clogging Model For Steam Generators
International audienceLong-term operation of nuclear steam generators can result in the occurrence of clogging, a deposition phenomenon that may increase the risk of mechanical and vibration loadings on tube bundles and internal structures as well as potentially affecting their response to hypothetical accidental transients. To manage and prevent this issue, a robust maintenance program that requires a fine understanding of the underlying physics is essential. This study focuses on the utilization of a clogging simulation code developed by EDF R&D. This numerical tool employs specific physical models to simulate the kinetics of clogging and generates time dependent clogging rate profiles for particular steam generators. However, certain parameters in this code are subject to uncertainties. To address these uncertainties, Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to assess the distribution of the clogging rate. Subsequently, polynomial chaos expansions are used in order to build a metamodel while time-dependent Sobol' indices are computed to understand the impact of the random input parameters throughout the whole operating time. Comparisons are made with a previous published study and additional Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion sensitivity indices are computed. Key input-output dependencies are exhibited in the different chemical conditionings and new behavior patterns in high-pH regimes are uncovered by the sensitivity analysis. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the clogging phenomenon while opening future lines of modeling research and helping in robustifying maintenance planning
Probabilistic surrogate modeling by Gaussian process: A new estimation algorithm for more robust prediction
International audienceIn reliability engineering studies, computer codes are increasingly used to model physical phenomena which, in many cases, can be very time-consuming to run. A widely accepted approach consists in approximating the CPU-time expensive computer model by a surrogate model. One of the most popular surrogate model is the Gaussian Process regression, as it provides, additionally to a prediction at an unobserved point, an uncertainty around this prediction (a predictive distribution). However, in practice, the quality of this metamodel depends on several choices, as the estimation and validation algorithms. The present work aims at proposing a new algorithm, based on constrained optimization multi-objective techniques, to estimate the Gaussian process hyperparameters in order to ensure robust and accurate (i.e. reliable) predictive distribution of the Gaussian process. An intensive numerical benchmark on various analytical functions, with different input dimensions and learning sample sizes, shows its good performance in comparison with standard estimation algorithms. The new algorithm is also applied to a real test case modeling an aquatic ecosystem. It is compared with a recent robust and sophisticated Bayesian method; it proves to be as efficient while being less sensitive to the specification of the Gaussian process model
Hydrodynamic Modelling of Seine Bay and Estuary in Moderate and Extreme Conditions: With a Focus on Johanna Storm
International audienceSeine estuary experiences large tidal ranges (e.g., around 7 m during spring tide) and a long high-tide slack time (roughly three hours). As an embayed estuary located in the English Channel, its dynamics is highly affected by the tidal transformation and mass/momentum exchanges between the English Channel and Seine Bay. However, these mechanisms are not well studied yet. In this investigation, a Telemac2D hydrodynamic model of Seine Bay and Estuary (abbreviated as SBE in this paper) is developed and calibrated for both moderate and extreme conditions. First, the main parameters affecting the tidal dynamics of SBE are identified. Then, the model is enhanced to correct the simulation of tidal propagation in Seine Bay in moderate conditions, thereby reproducing the length and shape of the high-tide slack in the Seine estuary as observed by the in-situ measurements. The enhancement procedure is further confirmed by applying it to another marine-boundary-condition type (i.e., time series of total water level as well as harmonic constituents). Moreover, the results in the bay are validated using remotely-sensed, altimetry data. Then, the model is adapted to simulate the storm-surge events in SBE, focusing on the Johanna storm which caused considerable damage and casualties in March 2008. The calibrated model is used to investigate the tidal dynamics as well as the effects of meteorlogical forces in SBE and can be a useful tool to further study the hydro-eco-morphology of the SBE. This work aims at providing a reliable map of surface water evolution throughout the SBE in stormy conditions. The model will be used in the Cal/Val phase of the SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) mission to calibrate and validate the SWOT simulator
