Cold Sintering as a Versatile Compaction Route for Hybrid Solid Electrolytes: Mechanistic Insight into Ionic Conductivity and Microstructure

    No full text
International audienceTo investigate the key parameters of the Cold Sintering Process (CSP) applied to the fabrication of all-solid-state batteries and their influence on the resulting electrochemical properties, we conducted an extensive study using impedance spectroscopy and electron microscopy on cubic Al-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) material, one of the most promising solid electrolytes. Among various parameters such as duration, temperature, pressure, morphology, solvent, and additives, we identified the optimal conditions for their application as efficient electrolyte materials. The transport of Li + ions in these CSP composites was studied using EIS, revealing a conductivity value of 10 –4 S cm −1 for cubic LLZO with PPC, DMF and LiClO 4 at a compaction level of 74%. Moreover, by investigating both complex impedance and complex permittivity behaviour over a wide range of frequencies, we demonstrated that organic/inorganic interfaces exhibit significant polarization when the dielectric constants of the two materials differ greatly. This suggests that Li + transport primarily occurs through the connected PPC-DMF-LiClO 4 network, where the interface tortuosity has a substantial impact. To describe this behaviour, a transmission line model was employed. Conversely, when the interface polarization is minimal, Li + transport occurs through both the interface and the connected PPC-DMF-LiClO 4 network, resulting in better ionic percolation with reduced tortuosity

A stochastic front tracking method for compressible flow with interfaces

    No full text
A front tracking method is proposed to deal with compressible flows involving sharp interfaces. It relies on a first-order finite-volumes scheme of Lagrange-Projection type. While the Lagrangian step of the method is classical, the projection step is based on a pseudo-random sampling technique in the spirit of the one used in the Glimm's scheme. The scheme allows reducing the numerical diffusion at the interface, in the sense that they remain sharp. It has robustness and convergence properties that are not present in most of the schemes proposed previously, and it can be applied to unstructured meshes. While this new method works very well on structured meshes, improvements are still needed in order to achieve accurate results on unstructured meshes (triangles).</div

    No full text
International audienceIn order to guarantee the reliability of industrial systems, statistical studies can be carried out on a variable of interest, Y , or, more precisely, on a risk measure computed based on this variable. This article studies and compares different risk measures, on the one hand, according to their theoretical properties, and, on the other hand, according to their numerical estimation. In particular, a distinction is proposed between risk measures homogeneous to the variable of interest Y (margin, quantile, and superquantile) and risk measures homogeneous to a probability (failure and buffered failure probability). More specifically, a duality between these two categories is developed, showing the equivalence of using a Y -homogeneous risk measure with a dual, homogeneous, [0, 1]-homogeneous risk measure. Finally, a non-asymptotic statistical framework is proposed for decision-making using these risk measures. The latter can be used in practice in the case where the considered risk measures are the probability of failure and the quantile, and is equivalent, under one assumption, to a quantile estimation using the Wilks' method.

Farewell to gas: Ex-post evaluation of a case study replacing a boiler with a heat pump solely based on available smart meter data

International audienceElectrifying end-uses by replacing fossil fuels is crucial in Europe to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and enhance energy independence. This study focuses on the replacement of an old natural gas-fired boiler with an air-to-water heat pump for both space heating and domestic hot water (DHW) in a large, historic house (circa year 1500).We assessed the energy savings from this replacement by monitoring daily electricity consumption via an existing smart meter over two distinct periods: two years with the gas boiler (for heating and DHW) and over a year post-retrofit with the heat pump (covering heating, hot water, appliances, and cooking). Initial gas consumption data for space heating and hot water allowed us to evaluate the impacts of this transition in terms of energy use, CO2 emissions, and financial implications. To quantify energy savings, we employed a multivariate regression model to adjust the baseline for actual weather conditions. Our findings indicate an increase in electricity consumption of approximately 50 kWh/m², which is largely offset by the elimination of gas consumption (around 300 kWh/m²), both in energy and monetary terms. Notably, CO2 emissions were reduced by over 80%, aligning with results from similar case studies.Additionally, we analysed the thermal gradient (power demand relative to outside temperature) to understand the heat-sensitive consumption patterns, primarily associated with space heating and hot water. This analysis was compared with other houses of varying ages (recent, intermediary) to illustrate the variability in thermal sensitivity based on insulation quality

Chapter 4. Main phenomena and associated models

    No full text
International audienceChapter 4 sets out detailed models for single-phase and two-phase flows. The chapter begins by outlining methods for assessing the void fraction in a two-phase flow mixture. The following two sections present an overview of pressure losses and heat transfer, initially with standard single-phase models and then with approaches for two-phase flows. Section four of this chapter provides a description of critical flow, which is a key phenomenon in accidental situations. The remaining sections address countercurrent flow, condensation, and natural circulation. The final section offers a concise overview of residual power, steam binding, stagnation point, reflux condensation, loop seal plugging and clearance, chimney effect and nonequilibrium effects

    No full text

Web of Simulation Ontology-Driven Framework (WoSO-DF) for Integrating Building Performance Simulations and IoT Systems for Smart Energy Management

    No full text
International audienceBuildings account for a substantial share of global energy consumption, making their optimization critical for addressing climate change and rising energy demands. While IoT systems enables real-time monitoring and control, it fails to account for complex thermal dynamics. Building energy management could benefit from interoperability between IoT systems and building performance simulations. This paper demonstrates the application of the Web of Simulations Ontology (WoSO) to address this interoperability challenge in an office building located in Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne, France. The study aims to showcase a framework for applying semantic web technologies and demonstrate the benefits of simulation-IoT integration in real building systems
