International audienceThe accurate modeling and prediction of polymers fate when discharged in rivers is of great importance to understand their impact on aquatic and soil ecosystems. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the environmental fate of sodium polyacrylate, used polymer across many industries, in a reach of the Seine River through an integrated approach combining laboratory experiments, numerical simulations performed using the openTELEMAC system, and analytical modeling. Laboratory adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate its adsorption for calcite and kaolin, minerals representative of suspended sediments in the Seine River. The hydrodynamics results obtained using TELEMAC-2D were validated using velocity field measurements. One-dimensional analytical solutions were derived and first used to validate numerical simulations for the polymer concentrations obtained using WAQTEL-MICROPOL in controlled flume-like configuration, and subsequently applied to the Seine River reach to assess their applicability in complex riverine systems. The laboratory experiments were used to validate the adsorption sub-model named "the one-step reversible model", and therefore the adsorption parameters obtained from model calibration were incorporated into the river model to investigate the impact of suspended sediments mineralogical composition on sodium polyacrylate transport and fate. This multidisciplinary approach enhances our understanding of polymers behavior in aquatic environments, providing valuable insights for environmental management and pollution mitigation strategies

Une couverture contre la précarité énergétique

    No full text
International audienceThe French government implemented energy price shields in the fall of 2021 to protect the French households and their purchasing power. We propose another measure to cover households against fuel poverty: an insurance that guarantees a minimum level of energy to households. It applies to non-fuel-poor households and is differentiated by income and housing characteristics. For illustration, we focus on non-fuel poor households that live in all-electric dwellings and whose electricity price is regulated. We estimate that 2.06 TWh are needed to guarantee the minimum level of electricity to these households. This measure will be less expensive than the cost of the tariff shield for those households as long as the sourcing price of electricity stays under 803€/MWh!Fin 2021, le gouvernement français a mis en place des boucliers tarifaires pour protéger le pouvoir d'achat des ménages français.

Generation of Pathological Cases for Rounding Errors

    No full text
National audienceGiven a program with floating-point computations, there are many analysis tools, available to obtain an upper bound on the rounding error. We aim to evaluate the tightness of this rounding bound by exhibiting input values for the program where the rounding error is close to this bound (called "pathological cases"). We propose an automatic method for generating pathological cases based on delta debugging and guided by Gappa. We have implemented this method and applied it to numerous examples from FPBench and publications

On the unmapped tent pitching for the heterogeneous wave equation

    No full text
The Unmapped Tent Pitching (UTP) algorithm is a space–time domain decomposition method for the parallel solution of hyperbolic problems. It was originally introduced for the homogeneous one-dimensional wave equation in [Ciaramella, Gander, Mazzieri, 2024]. UTP is inspired by the Mapped Tent Pitching (MTP) algorithm [Gopalakrishnan, Schöberl, Wintersteiger, 2017], which constructs the solution by iteratively building polytopal space–time subdomains, referred to as tents. In MTP, each physical tent is mapped onto a space–time rectangle, where local problems are solved before being mapped back to the original domain. In contrast, UTP avoids the nonlinear and potentially singular mapping step by computing the solution directly on a physical space–time rectangle that contains the tent, at the expense of redundant computations in the region outside the tent. In this work, we investigate several strategies to extend UTP to heterogeneous media, where the wave propagation speed is piecewise constant over two subregions of the domain. Among the considered approaches, the most efficient in terms of computational time is the one employing space–time subdomains with identical spatial and temporal dimensions in both regions, determined by the maximum propagation speed

CFD modeling of hydrogen release and dispersion in a congested container

    No full text
International audienceHydrogen plays an important role in driving decarbonization within the current global energy landscape. As hydrogen infrastructures rapidly expand beyond their traditional applications, there is a need for comprehensive safety practices, solutions, and regulations. Within this framework, the dispersion of hydrogen in enclosed facilities presents a significant safety concern due to its potential for explosive accidents. In this study, hydrogen dispersion in a confined and congested environment (37 m³ container) is studied using computational fluid dynamics simulations. The experimental setup mirrors previous INERIS investigations, featuring a centrally located hydrogen injection point on the floor with a 20 mm diameter injector and a release rate of 35 g/s, resulting in a Froude number of 650. This yields an inertial jet and a challenging dispersion scenario for numerical prediction. Concentration mapping is carried out by 3 oxygen analyzers distributed throughout the 37 m3 chamber. Comparisons are made between the measured and numerical data to validate the solver used under such conditions. Best practice guidelines are followed, and sensitivity studies involving grid refinement and boundary conditions are conducted to ensure robust simulation results. The findings highlight the model's ability to reproduce the hydrogen concentration distribution for both empty and congested containers and underline the role of accounting for leakages in such scenarios

    No full text

A Principal-Agent model for optimal incentives in renewable investments

    No full text
In this paper, we investigate the optimal regulation of energy production in alignment with the long-term goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and analyze the optimal regulatory incentives to foster the development of nonemissive electricity generation when the demand for power is met either by a single firm or by two interacting agents. The regulator aims to encourage green investments to limit carbon emissions while simultaneously reducing the intermittency of total energy production. We find that the regulator can achieve a higher certainty equivalent by regulating two interacting firms, each investing in one technology, rather than a single firm managing both technologies. This higher value is achieved thanks to a greater degree of freedom in the incentive mechanisms, which involve cross-subsidies between firms. Moreover, we find that it is optimal to compensate firms for shutting down their emissive production assets. We provide closed-form expressions of the second-best contracts and show that they take a rebate form, involving time-dependent prices for each state variable. A numerical study quantifies the impact of the designed second-best contract in both market structures compared to the business-as-usual scenario

Using (Traditional) Multi-Agent principles to suggest improvements for Agentic AI platforms

    No full text
International audienceMulti-Agent Systems (MAS) have been a key AI subfield since the 1980s, with strong academic foundations in intelligent agents and agent-oriented programming. The rise of LLMs in the 2020s has led to "AI Agents" with greater autonomy, renewing interest in MAS and inspiring new platforms. While traditional MAS researchers are starting to integrate LLMs, the emerging, industry-driven Agentic AI community often overlooks MAS formalisms, leading to narrower, less rigorous definitions. This paper uses MAS formalism to clarify Agentic AI concepts, highlight current limitations, and suggest paths for improvement
