Habitat Complexity Reduces the Feeding Strength of Freshwater Predators

No full text
International audienceThe physical structure of an environment potentially influences feeding interactions among organisms, for instance, by providing refuge for prey. We examined how habitat complexity affects the functional feeding response of an ambush predator (damselfly larvae Ischnura elegans) and a pursuit predator (backswimmer Notonecta glauca) feeding on the isopod Asellus aquaticus. We ran experiments in aquatic microcosms with an increasing number of structural elements (0, 2, or 3 rings of plastic plants in different spatial configurations), resulting in five habitat complexity levels. Across these levels, predators were presented with different prey densities to determine the functional response pattern. The experimental design and analysis allowed us to test for effects of structure presence, amount, and complexity level on functional response in one pass, without confounding predictors. Across all complexity levels, the feeding for both predators was best described by a type II functional response model, and habitat drove feeding strength. Regarding the latter, the predators showed different responses to the complexity treatments. The overall feeding rate of I. elegans was mainly explained by the absence versus presence of structure. Yet, in the case of N. glauca, feeding rate was strongly dependent on habitat complexity with the predator showing a unique maximum feeding rate (i.e., the inverse of the handling time) for each complexity level and a decreasing attack rate with increasing amount of habitat. On average, prey consumption by both predators was reduced when complex structures were present, compared to the 'no habitat structure' environment (e.g., consumption more than halved for some treatments). Our findings demonstrate that habitat complexity dampens feeding rates and therefore plays a key role in the stability of freshwater ecosystems.</div

This thesis is set against the backdrop of an evolving French insurance sector, characterized by the rise of group health insurance. Companies—especially very small and small-to-medium enterprises—face a complex choice among multiple, often opaque offers in a continuously shifting regulatory context and an increasingly digitized environment. The goal of this research is to gain an in-depth understanding of the decision-making mechanisms at play among key stakeholders, while proposing concrete avenues for improvement to facilitate their choices. On the theoretical front, we shall draw on concepts from behavioural economics and decision theory to highlight the obstacles associated with information overload. From the standpoint of methodology, the thesis will bring together a number of qualitative and quantitative areas of research (semi-structured interviews, experience feedback, and online reviews), the objective being to confront theoretical models with actual organizational realities. Particular attention is paid to User Experience (UX) and Customer Experience (CX), through the study of insurance comparator ergonomics and a case study of a start-up specializing in social protection compliance. Our findings underscore how insurance literacy, perceived complexity and insufficient guidance can have a significant impact on the final decision. Proposed improvements include optimizing interfaces and designing more contextualized user journeys, so as to enhance corporate satisfaction and trust in a sector still considered unduly complex.Beyond group health insurance, this thesis calls for rethinking the entire B2B2C (business-to-business-to-consumer) decision-making process in sectors where regulatory complexity converges with experience-related and technological innovation challenges.

The Atlantic salmon population in the Allier basin is considered vulnerable despite an intensive restoration programme. As part of the Loire management plan, the main challenges involve acquiring new knowledge, particularly regarding the identification of natural spawning areas, which are essential for the renewal of the Allier population, and evaluating the effectiveness of the restocking programme (PLAGEPOMI 2022-2027). As genetic tools offer insufficient spatial resolution to address these issues, it was necessary to develop new methodologies. It is in this context that the HISALOCO project (2024-2025) proposed to test the potential of a promising new approach, otolith chemistry, and apply it to adult salmon returning to Vichy between 2008 and 2020. The chemical composition of the otolith, or ear stone, makes it possible, under certain conditions – particularly when there are chemical contrasts between tributaries and between tributaries and the fish farm(s) used for restocking – to identify the native origin and river of growth of adult salmon returning to a river basin (Martin et al., 2013 a,b; Bareille et al., 2017).The first stage of the study aimed to assess the ability of the Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, Sr/Ba and 87Sr/86Sr ratios to distinguish the Allier from its tributaries, as well as individuals from anadromous reproduction from those from the Chanteuges fish farm. The results obtained show that the geochemical signatures of the waters make it possible to distinguish the Allier river from almost all of its tributaries that can support the development of smolts, with the exception of the Sioule, which cannot be distinguished from the Allier. Some tributaries are nevertheless grouped together within entities with similar chemical signatures. On the other hand, the Allier upstream of the inflows from Lake Naussac has a geochemistry that is quite different from that downstream due to the water supply provided by this lake. Finally, the Alagnon also shows a change in geochemical signature at the confluence with the Sianne. With regard to the origin of natural reproduction versus fish farming, the 87Sr/86Sr signature measured in the central area of the otolith makes it possible to effectively differentiate between individuals from the Chanteuges fish farm and those from natural anadromous reproduction in refuge areas. The second step consisted of using otolith chemistry to identify the origin (fish farm or natural reproduction), the river of development at the juvenile stage and the birth cohort of 225 returning adults, captured in Vichy between 2011 and 2020 to support the restocking programme. Of the 225 individuals, 191 were identified as belonging to the birth years (cohorts) 2008 to 2015 and were selected because they had a sufficient number of otoliths (n>18 per cohort, except 2010 n=8). The other 34 salmon belonged to the cohorts 2004 to 2007 or 2016-2017, but given the insufficient number of otoliths (n<5), these cohorts were not selected. Among the salmon that returned to Vichy between 2011 and 2020, born between 2008 and 2015, 55% were from natural anadromous reproduction, and this proportion did not vary significantly over the years. The majority of these individuals came from the Allier axis (74%), suggesting that this is the main site of anadromous reproduction in the basin, especially downstream from the tributaries of Lake Naussac. The Alagnon, the main tributary of the Allier, as well as the other tributaries (Chapeauroux, Seuges, Desges, Couzes, Dore, Senuire, etc.) contributed only modestly, at 16% and 10% respectively. Almost all of the returns from anadromous reproduction in the Alagnon came from its downstream section, below the confluence with the Sianne, in line with LOGRAMI's observations of spawning grounds. The remaining 45% of salmon came from the restocking programme, with 35-41% of individuals released at the fry/pre-summer stage and 4-10% at the smolt stage. Paradoxically, a larger proportion of the restocking (48%) came from the Alagnon, even though only a quarter of the fry had been released there. On the other hand, the Allier, where 64% of the fry releases took place, contributed only 30%. The Dore's contribution is estimated at around 13%, but this is highly uncertain as part of it could be linked to smolt restocking in the Allier. These results suggest that fry restocking is more effective in the Alagnon than in the Allier, a finding confirmed by the estimated return rate: 104 versus 25 salmon returning per 100,000 fry released. The estimated return rate of salmon from fry restocking in the Alagnon is among the highest observed in comparison with other French river basins (Dordogne, Garonne, Gave de Pau, Bareille en cours), while that of the Allier is among the lowest, comparable to that of the Garonne. The effectiveness of fry restocking in the Alagnon could be linked to the good environmental conditions of this tributary. On the other hand, the poor performance observed in the Allier seems to be linked to massive fry stocking in sector S5 (50% of releases), which is not conducive to the survival of fry, whether they are from restocking or native, as indicated by the low abundances of 0+ smolts measured in autumn in this sector by LOGRAMI. This poor performance could also be explained by competition with native parr production in sector S4, where the remaining 50% of fry releases into the Allier take place and where numerous spawning grounds have been identified by LOGRAMI.With regard to restocking at the later smolt stage, despite the uncertainty associated with the Dore, the return rate remains low in all cases and comparable to that observed in the Dordogne basin. This stage of release therefore seems ill-suited to effective renewal of the salmon population in the Allier.A comparison of return rates between restocking and natural reproduction (min-max estimate) suggests that it is preferable to favour the latter, which is often more effective and less costly. Restocking should be reserved for areas (Allier and tributaries) with favourable environmental conditions, such as those observed in the Alagnon, and where natural reproduction is limited, in order to reduce competition between native individuals and restocked fry.

International audienceIn a report published in 2014, Canadian police services reported 6,849 femicides between 1980 and 2012, 16% of which involved Aboriginal women. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police report puts the number of missing or murdered Indigenous women over these three decades at at least 1,200. Given that people of Indigenous descent represented 4% of the country's population at the time, this figure would be roughly equivalent to 30,000 non-Indigenous women missing or murdered in the space of thirty years. It goes without saying that such a figure would have caused a stir among the Canadian population and that the federal authorities would have quickly taken up the issue. However, the report published in 2018 following the work of the National Enquiry into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and Girls demonstrates the recurring inaction of the RCMP and provincial or territorial police forces, which tend to play down the importance of cases in which the victims are Aboriginal.Ten years ago, Sindy Ruperthouse, a 44-year-old Abitibiwinni woman from Pikogan, a First Nations community in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec, seemed to have vanished into thin air. When she disappeared in April 2014, it took more than four weeks for the Sûreté du Québec teams to take the statements of her relatives seriously. A suspect was arrested in 2016, then tried and convicted for the murder of another woman, a white woman this time, but did not confess to the murder of Sindy, whose bones were never found. However, there are serious suspicions about hiom as he was Sindy'sformer partner, who regularly abused her physically. Eeyou artist Virginia Pesemapeo Bordeleau, who was already sensitive to these issues and close to the victim's family, wrote a collection of poems entitled Poésie en marche pour Sindy (2018). She has organised walks in the city of Val-d'Or, created plant compositions for Sindy, painted a giant portrait of the young woman, coordinated a special issue of the Lettres québécoises magazine on missing or murdered Indigenous sisters (2023) and put together an exhibition called Cibles/Targets, inaugurated at the l'Écart art centre in Rouyn Noranda in August 2024.This talk will contextualise the issue of violence against Indigenous women in Canada before presenting Virginia Pesemapeo Bordeleau's work on these issues. The aim will be to show that the commitment of this multidisciplinary artist offers an eminently political aesthetic response, one that has much to do with re-establishing discursive sovereignty in a Canadian society where non-Indigenous voices still play down the extent of the violence inflicted on Aboriginal populations.

No full text

Use of laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry for analysis of selenosugars bound to proteins

No full text
International audienceAbstract We previously used high pressure liquid chromatography coupled with Se-specific inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and molecule specific (ESI Orbitrap MS/MS) detection to study the increase in liver Se in turkeys and rats supplemented as selenite in high-Se (5 µg Se/g diet) and adequate-Se diets. We found that far more Se is present as selenosugar (seleno-N-acetyl galactosamine) than is present as selenocysteine (Sec) in true selenoproteins. In high-Se liver, the increase in liver Se was due to low molecular weight selenometabolites such as glutathione-, cysteine-, and methyl-conjugates of the selenosugar, but also as high molecular weight species as selenosugars decorating general proteins via mixed Se-S bonds. To demonstrate selenosugar binding to proteins, aqueous liver extracts from animals fed Se-adequate and high-Se were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Native-PAGE with and without pretreatment with β-mercaptoethanol (βME). The separated proteins were then electrophoretically transferred to membranes, and the membranes subsequently were subjected to laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis of 78Se profiles. Without βME treatment, Se was widely distributed across the molecular weight profile for both SDS-PAGE and Native-PAGE, whereas βME pretreatment dramatically reduced Se binding, reducing the profile to true Sec-selenoproteins. This reduction was ∼50% for both high-Se rat and turkey extracts. The increased Se in non-βME treated samples was distributed across the full profile. The use of LA-ICP-MS indicates that selenosugar residues are bound to protein subunits of multiple sizes, and that targeted attachment of selenosugars to a single or limited number of protein subunits does not occur

New Highly Sulfonated Polythioethers as Polyelectrolyte Membranes for Water Electrolysis

No full text
International audienceHerein, the synthesis and characterization of highly sulfonated poly(arylene thioethers) for application as polymer electrolyte membranes in water electrolysis are reported. In a first step, poly(arylene thioethers) were obtained by using mild reaction conditions of a polycondensation reaction between 4,4′-thiobisbenzenethiol and decafluorobiphenyl. In a second step, the resulting poly(arylene thioethers) were sulfonated by a fluorothiol displacement click reaction of the fluorinated monomers by sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate. Thus, highly sulfonated polymers were obtained, resulting in water-soluble ionomers. Stable polymer electrolyte membranes with enhanced thermal and chemical stability were attained by blending ionomers with a poly(benzimidazole) derivative (PBI-OO). The resulting proton-exchange membranes (PEMs) based on the new sulfonated ionomer PBI-OO blends showed about 40% higher proton conductivity than Nafion at 90 °C. The proton-conducting membranes with the highest conductivity and best film-forming properties were applied for water electrolysis. Combined with optimized water oxidation and reduction catalysts, the selected tetra-sulfonated polymer-based PEM reached 1.784 V at 1 A cm-2 in the electrolysis of pure wate
