Cathodic protection of historical metal-hulled shipwrecks: A complementary approach from on-site global measurements to multiscale characterization (corrosion layers, biodiversity, and electrochemical measurements)
International audienceThousands of metal wrecks lie along the French coast, serving as tangible reminders of the two world conflicts. Over time, these contemporary wrecks have gradually formed artificial reefs. However, they deteriorate under the effect of corrosion, leading to the loss of valuable historical information and the potential release of polluting compounds and metals. This evolution of shipwrecks has drastic consequences for marine ecosystems and environment. To preserve these submerged structures and prevent their complete degradation, the French ANR project Save Our Shipwrecks (SOS) proposes to implement cathodic protection treatments on pilot wrecks in the English Channel and in Mediterranean. While cathodic protection is well-mastered for uncorroded metals, its application to heavily corroded submerged structures presents significant scientific and technical challenges. The SOS project is developing a new methodology by studying two shipwrecks located in different environments (e.g., geographical, depth). The wrecks are investigated comprehensively—from their metallic core to corrosion and concretion layers—as well as in relation to their surrounding environments, including sediments and biodiversity, both with and without the application of cathodic protection
Assessing the Physicochemical Properties, Thermal Stability, Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Activities of <i>Baillonella toxisperma</i> Seed Butters
International audienceBaillonella toxisperma (Moabi) seed is a multipurpose fruit mainly used in the craft way and remains underexplored as an added value product. This study investigates the physicochemical properties of its butter to consider going beyond small-scale farming. The raw material analyzed has been extracted by using a traditional process. The physical and chemical properties of moabi butter were evaluated using official standards and established methods. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transfer Infrared (FTIR-ATR), and Thermogravimetry (TGA) analyses were performed to characterize thermal behavior and main chemical groups. Additionally, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to identify and quantify fatty acid compounds. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were also evaluated. The results show that kernel seeds yielded 30.0% butter. The refractive index was 1.464 and butter remains solid at room temperature. The density and specific gravity values were 0.91 mg/mL and 0.92 g/cm 3 , respectively. The acid and peroxide values were 38.76 mg KOH/g and 6.30 meq O2/kg. The iodine value was 16.26 (mg I2/100 g butter) while saponification index and unsaponifiable matters were 200.5 (mg KOH/g) and 1.52%, respectively. GC/MS revealed the major fatty acids as oleic acid (53.6%), stearic acid (32.5%), and palmitic acid (10.8%), with minor fatty acids as linoleic (2.5%) and arachidic (0.6%) acids. FTIR results showed several bands indicating the presence of fatty compounds. TGA indicated that this butter is stable until 200˚C and fully degraded at 550˚C. DSC displayed the glass transition of moabi butter between −10˚C and −7˚C, with a melting point at 55˚C. This butter exhibited an anti-inflammatory activity at 79.95 mg/mL and an antioxidant activity at 4.94 mg/mL. The study demonstrated that moabi seed butter is an important product with interesting physicochemical properties. This butter demonstrated its potential for both human consumption and industrial applications
Species traits may predict extinction risk of Azorean endemic arthropods
Pré-dépôt HAL IPREM via X2HalInternational audienceOceanic islands, recognised for their isolation, high endemic species richness and unique evolutionary paths compared with their continental counterparts, are extremely susceptible to anthropogenic activities. The fragmentation of island habitats and disruption of native ecosystems has increased the risk of extinction for many endemic species, including arthropods. Extinction is not random, and some species traits may increase the probability of species entering an extinction trajectory.Studying species traits alongside International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) threat levels may offer valuable insights into their vulnerability and inform targeted conservation strategies. Here, we aim to test the predictability of IUCN threat categories and conservation status based on endemic Azorean arthropods' functional traits: body size, trophic group and vertical strata occupancy. We demonstrate that species with limited vertical occupancy, particularly those restricted to ground level, are more vulnerable to extinction than those that inhabit the forest canopy. Contrary to our expectations, body size and trophic group did not appear to be direct predictors of the threat level. Overall, our findings underscore previous and ongoing effects of human activities in island ecosystems. Hence, we emphasise the need to look at species traits as predictors of future extinctions in endemic island arthropods
This document presents a class of two-fields Friedrichs systems, allowing to encompass classic time-harmonic wave propagation problems into a unique formalism: notions of incoming and outgoing traces, in addition to a normal flux decomposition and a consistent numerical flux expression are defined in this general setting. Then, a Trefftz method is introduced for this class of problems: formulations based on the reciprocity formula or the Ultra Weak Variational Formulation are defined, allowing to prove weak-coercivity and contraction properties of the preconditioned system. Finally, we discuss the interpretation of the method from the point of view of Domain Decomposition methods, and recall classic error estimates results and discretisation by plane waves.
Mini-GRID therapy delivers optimised spatially fractionated radiation therapy using a flattening free filter accelerator
International audienceBackground: Radioresistant tumours remain a challenge for conventional radiation therapy (RT), and often, only palliative treatment can be offered. Recently developed techniques, such as spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) could potentially improve treatment. However, current clinical SFRT implementations do not allow the full potential to be exploited. We further optimize SFRT, developing mini-GRID, which uses a flattening free filter accelerator. Methods: The increase in normal tissue tolerances provided by mini-GRID compared to conventional RT and GRID therapy was validated in a rat model of brain irradiation in a longitudinal imaging study, behavioural tests and by histopathological evaluation. Results: The implementation optimizes mini-GRID therapy, with beam widths around 2 mm2. The peak-to-valley dose ratios and peak dose rates are around 4 and 7 Gy/min, respectively. Mini-GRID RT allows the use of high peak doses: 42 Gy in one fraction, a factor more than twice higher than the peak doses generally employed in conventional GRID therapy (20 Gy peak dose). This enables the use of more aggressive and potentially curative treatments. Infrared microspectroscopy analysis suggests different early biochemical changes in both modalities, with conventional RT leading to stronger modifications in the secondary protein structure, and higher oxidative damage than mini-GRID RT.Conclusions: The possibility to treat both large and small tumours, and to perform safe and potentially curative dose escalations in previously untreatable cases, makes mini-GRID a promising approach to expand the clinical use of SFRT

Experimental study of clogging on inclined, fish-friendly trash-racks
International audienceHydropower plants are constantly being upgraded to reduce their impact on biodiversity. However, these improvements may have a negative impact on production. In particular, inclined fish-friendly trash-racks installed at water intakes to facilitate downstream migration can lead to increased production losses. The head losses generated by such trash-racks have been studied extensively, but clogging issues are rarely addressed in detail. Clogged trash-racks are responsible for increased head losses, which must be taken into account. An experimental study is carried out within a rectangular free surface channel with various inclined trash-racks and clogging issues using superposed layers of different areas and materials. The objective is to understand the evolution of the head loss based on the degree of clogging. The importance of understanding clogging issues and taking them into account is emphasized by the significant impact of several clogging parameters on head losses
