Clarifying the origin of molecular O2 in cathode oxides
International audienceAnionic redox has reshaped the conventional way of exploring advanced cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. However, how anions participate in the redox process has been the subject of intensive debate, evolving from electron holes to O-O dimerization and currently to a focus on trapped molecular O2 based on high-resolution resonant X-ray inelastic scattering research. Here we show that the resonant X-ray inelastic scattering signal of molecular O2 is not exclusive to Li-rich oxide cathodes, but appears consistently in O-redox-inactive oxide materials even with a short beam exposure time as low as 1 min, indicating that molecular O2 species are not directly related to voltage hysteresis and voltage decay. We further demonstrated that molecular O2 is not a direct product of electrochemistry but more likely a consequence of the core excitation process in resonant X-ray inelastic scattering, for which the possible scenarios of the dissociation of 'M-(O-O)'-like species on beam excitation must be considered. Collectively, our results reconcile the conflicting reported results on the (non-)observation of molecular O2 signal collected from different beamlines and suggest that molecular O2 is not the energetic engine of new battery oxide cathodes
Rapport 24-12.
Revealing of multifunctional newly isolated Bacillus strains from Algerian wastes with high pectinase activity for sustainable biotechnological application
International audiencePectinases, a group of enzymes that degrade pectin, are crucial in various industrial applications. This study aimed to isolate, characterize, and evaluate the multifunctional traits of pectinase-producing bacteria from partially decayed fruits and soil in Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria. Out of 80 isolates screened on pectinase screening agar medium (PSAM), five Bacillus species demonstrated significant pectinase activity, with pectin degradation indices (PDI) of 6.9–7.9 and enzyme yields of 7.9–10 U/mL under submerged fermentation. Morphological, biochemical, and 16S rRNA gene analyses identified these strains as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SL9, B. licheniformis SC3, B. mojavensis ST1, B. velezensis SPC3, and B. siamensis SL6. Besides pectinase production, these Bacillus spp. displayed plant growth-promoting traits (including nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, siderophore production, and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) synthesis) and antimicrobial activity against several phytopathogens. They also produced diverse extracellular enzymes and demonstrated tolerance to salinity, pH variation, and high temperatures underscoring their adaptability to challenging environments. These findings highlight the potential of these Bacillus spp. for industrial enzyme production, biocontrol, and sustainable agricultural applications, particularly in stress-prone conditions
Potential impact of tide-regulation barriers on the formation of methylmercury in the Venice Lagoon (Italy)
International audienceMethylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxic pollutant, is formed mainly under anaerobiosis. The “Modulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico” (MOSE), built to temporarily close the Venice Lagoon and protect the city from flooding, induces changes in the hydrological regime, reducing water circulation and decreasing in the dissolved oxygen concentrations of the lagoon. Our study shows the potential changes in sediment and overlying water physico-chemistry in a simulated MOSE closing-event by incubating sediment cores for 48 h in the laboratory and deploying benthic chambers. In the incubated summer cores (September 2021), a significant increase in total Hg and MeHg concentrations in the water column was observed and associated with an increase in MeHg formation rates – particularly, MeHg formation rates doubled during the simulated MOSE-closing. This increase was associated to a release of dissolved organic carbon and to an enrichment of proteinaceous substances and reactive humic acids in the overlying waters. All these effects were not evident in late autumn (November 2019), when water temperature was 10 °C lower than in September 2021. Our study suggests that hydrological changes caused by the MOSE closure may in some periods increase MeHg concentrations within the Venice Lagoo
Frictional dissipation of incident waves over a spatially varying rough barrier reef in Mayotte, Indian Ocean
International audienceCoral reefs serve as a highly effective natural barrier against incom ing ocean waves. However, climate change and human induced degradations are threatening reefs, reducing their capacity to protect coastal populations by di minishing the frictional processes that dissipate wave energy. The most common approach to represent wave energy dissipation through bottom friction relies on the estimation of a representative roughness length, whose definition on coral environments remains to be elucidated. As a consequence, a generic parametrization for friction processes on coral reef systems is still lacking. In this study, high resolution hydrodynamical and topographical data collected at the South West barrier reef of Mayotte, Indian Ocean, were used to perform an estimation of wave friction. The hydraulic roughness estimated across the reef varies spatially, and attempts are made to connect this information with the diverse bed morphologies observed in the field
