    Effect of relative humidity and carbonation on the mechanical behavior of compacted fine recycled aggregates

    International audienceRecycled aggregates are primarily composed of concrete, natural stones, and bricks obtained through sorting, crushing, and sieving of construction and demolition waste. They offer a promising route toward reducing the consumption of natural resources and minimizing landfill use in civil engineering, thus supporting circular economy and contributing to more sustainable construction practices. This study specifically investigates the mechanical behavior of compacted fine recycled aggregates for road pavement base layers, with a focus on the effects of relative humidity and carbonation. Cylindrical samples with a compactness of 0.69 were subjected to controlled curing conditions over 30 and 100 days. Three relative humidity levels (53%, 65%, and 95%) and two carbon dioxide concentrations (0.05% representing natural conditions and 3% for accelerated carbonation) were also investigated. Additional samples were oven-dried to establish baseline mechanical properties under zero moisture content. All specimens were tested in a triaxial apparatus under confining pressures of 0, 100, 250, and 400 kPa to assess their shear strength and deformation behavior. The results indicate that higher CO₂ concentrations lead to a reduction in strength, contrary to expectations. Additionally, increased relative humidity correlates with lower peak strength and higher ductility. These findings underscore the critical influence of environmental curing conditions on the long-term performance of recycled aggregates in pavement applications

    A framework to quantify the vulnerability of insular biota to global changes

    International audienceThe majority of vulnerability assessments of biodiversity to global changes have so far been applied to, and designed for, mainland systems, overlooking islands. However, islands harbour unique biodiversity and are epicentres of ongoing extinctions. We thus introduce a specific framework for quantifying the vulnerability of terrestrial insular biota to multiple threats. This framework uses markers of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity to account for the unique characteristics of island biodiversity. Our assessment framework involves five steps: (1) defining the scope of the vulnerability assessment, (2) selecting the most appropriate markers, (3) computing the vulnerability metric, (4) evaluating uncertainties, and (5) providing recommendations for conservation. The development of this vulnerability framework tailored for island systems is part of a larger initiative to meet international policy targets that better integrate biodiversity threats and dimensions. We thus discuss the need and urgency for applying this framework to guide evidence-based decisions for the conservation of insular biodiversity, and for increased attention to insular biota at the science-policy interface

    A systematic review of the intersection between energy justice and human rights

    International audienceThis article systematically reviews the relationship between energy justice and human rights, recognising the shared responsibility of equity, inclusivity, respect, acknowledgement, and accountability for historical injustices. The energy justice theory is applied to checkmate the activities of the energy sector through the energy chain to manage its adverse impact on the environment and communities. This is anchored on five principles of distributional, procedural, recognition, restorative, and cosmopolitan justice principles. These principles are equally advocated for in the human rights framework to ensure universal energy access for well-being and a healthy environment. Therefore, this article explores how these energy justice and human rights principles have converged in the energy sector to tackle energy poverty, environmental degradation, community rights violations, and accountability concerns. The aim being to establish an intersection between the justice of energy activities and fundamental rights across academic journals and policy materials. Thus, by utilising a method of systematic review, this article analyses research materials spanning from January 2000 to October 2024. To understand the evolution of the relationship between human rights and energy justice, reflecting shifts in priorities and responses to contemporary issues. In this review, we find that very few studies have begun analysing human rights violations of energy activities as an energy justice concern. Therefore, this systematic review offers insights into creating a sustainable, accountable, and equitable energy system devoid of fundamental rights violations; through inclusive energy policies and implementation mechanisms that prioritize the rights, and well-being of vulnerable populations

    Dans le cadre du règlement européen Data Collection Framework (DCF) (n°1100/2007 du 18 septembre 2007) et du Plan de Gestion Anguille national, la France doit évaluer l’état des populations d’anguille européenne et l’efficacité des mesures de gestion sur le long terme. Pour cela, un suivi de la biométrie des civelles capturées par les pêcheurs professionnels a été mis en place. Il consiste en un échantillonnage réalisé dans les unités de gestion anguille où la pêche à la civelle est pratiquée. ces collectes ont été réalisées par deux prestataires (FISH PASS et CAPENA) sous la supervision de l'Office Français de la Biodiversité. Ce rapport présente les résultats du suivi réalisé durant la saison de pêche 2024-2025

    Enculturation's Rhythmic Imprint: Cross-Cultural Variations in Sensorimotor Synchronization

    International audienceGroup dynamics are more than a mere aggregation of individual behaviors; they emerge from the complex interplay interactions, which are deeply context dependent. Notably, a growing body of literature shows that enculturation introduces variations, as the rhythmic exposure since childhood shapes how individual synchronize their actions. Thereby, cultural environment molds group dynamics by influencing the most basic element of interpersonal interactions: individual perception-action dynamics. To examine this influence, we conducted two experiments to identify cross-cultural variations between French and Indian participants engaging in classical synchronization tasks. The results were analyzed through the lens of the dynamical system approach using forced oscillator models. In the first study, we documented the synchronization dynamics of both groups. The results revealed that while French participants exhibited negative mean asynchrony, Indian participants had a positive mean asynchrony. We proposed that this difference was partly due to a bigger over-estimation of the frequency of the rhythm for French participants than for Indian participants. In the second study, we explored the frequency adaptation mechanism supposed to be the cause of the observed over-estimation. Overall, our findings suggests that enculturation imprints down our most elementary temporal neural functions, thereby modifying our rhythmic behaviors and altering group dynamics
