The Insufficient Role of Urban Form and Its Uses in Baseline Assessments of Urban Plans in France

    No full text
International audienceWhen broadly defined, urban form is a key dimension of planning, directly tied to the challenges of 21st-century urbanization. In France, municipalities and metropolitan areas use the Local Urban Plan (PLU) as a powerful tool to move beyond outdated functionalist approaches. For these plans to engage meaningfully with urban form, however, their baseline assessments must identify the strengths and weaknesses of built forms and their multiple connections to related issues. Yet the French Urban Planning Code remains vague on both the content and methodology of such assessments, resulting in varied and often inconsistent practices. A comparative textual analysis, supported by an analytical grid applied to diagnostics from Lille, Bordeaux, and Lyon, shows that urban form is generally reduced to physical features of the built environment. However, it belongs to a broader systemic perspective, which is unevenly recognized across the documents. The absence of standardized protocols, spatial analyses, and detailed cartography reflects the lack of a shared framework—ultimately limiting these cities’ ability to produce robust, spatially informed strategies

Modelling karstic mediterranean forest environments : quantifying groundwater recharge while controlling surface water and energy transfers

    No full text
International audienceIn Mediterranean environments, droughts are identified as a major factor of vulnerability, in particular for forestry ecosystems which are exposed to increasingly frequent and intense droughts induced by climatic changes. Moreover, these ecosystems are mainly located in karstic environments, with a crucial importance of groundwater resources for both anthropic and vegetation uses, but also with complex and heterogeneous surface and hydrogeological processes. For instance, recent ecophysiological and isotopic studies have shown that tree roots are able to extract water deep enough in the epikarst to sustain transpiration during water stress periods. However, the quantification of water stocks, aquifer recharge and their dynamics are not yet fully established in such a context. This calls for using models suited to the complexity of the environment, able to improve knowledge of both groundwater recharge and forests hydric processes. The challenges require to adapt models to karstic environment constraints, in order to : i) jointly simulate diffuse infiltration into the superficial part of the root zone and fast preferential infiltration into a network of karstic fractures, and ii) simulate the transpiratory and water extraction processes throughout the root zone.Toward this objective, we improved a detailed and physics-based SVAT model (SiSPAT, by Braud et al., 1995) devoted to simulate energy and water exchanges into the epikarst, by including a new groundwater module, with a simple configuration, able to allocate generated surface runoff into the network of fractures. This new version was implemented, and then evaluated for the first time on two mediterranean forest sites included in the ICOS network, namely the forest sites of Font-Blanche (Bouches-du-Rhône, P.I. URFM) and Puéchabon (Hérault, P.I. CEFE). Performances obtained between observed and modeled soil water content, soil temperature and energy fluxes were particularly good. These results highlighted the necessity of representing both diffuse and preferential flows in SVAT modelling for karstic areas, to correctly replicate surface flux dynamics. Moreover, it was also shown that preferential infiltration builds up deep water storage throughout the year, and considerably improves transpiration processes during water stress periods. This newly integrated process also significantly affected the other hydrological balance components simulated, largely reducing runoff and water storage into the shallow soil, through introducing a groundwater recharge flow, as is the case in this zone without streams. A sensitivity analysis and multi-criteria statistical analysis was also performed on some key parameters controlling karst fractures and water uptake, rather difficult to estimate through observation or bibliography, in order to get an optimal range of simulations with the best performances. Finally, all these results allowed us to reduce uncertainties in quantitative estimates of groundwater recharge, through a better control of evapotranspiration at the surface. Our modelling approach shows new promising results, both in terms of performances obtained on two karstic forest sites and of the knowledge of processes at the surface-groundwater interface. This study opens further perspectives on the integrated functioning of the critical zone in karstic environments from mechanistic models. Next steps will concern the coupling between water and carbon cycles, through the development of a new module devoted to photosynthesis and improved stomatal conductance. This step is under progress, and will allow us to study the impacts of future droughts in a context of climatic changes

Subsistence strategies of Christian communities in the Arab-Persian Gulf during Late Anitquity and Early Islam: Archaeobotanical discoveries from al-Qusur (Kuwait) and Samahij (Bahrain)

    No full text
International audienceEastern Arabia experienced a rise of the Christian phenomenon during Late Antiquity and the early Islamic period, characterized notably by the foundation of monasteries. In the past few years, they constitute a hot topic of research this part of the Arabian Peninsula with investigations on new and already-known Christian sites while the subsistence strategies set up by these religious populations and their relatives for acquiring food plant resources remain totally unknown. Recent excavations led on two Christian settlements including the monastery of al-Qusūr (Failaka, Kuwait) and the possible episcopal seat of Mashmahig in Samahij (Bahrain) give the opportunity to get first answers to these questions through archaeobotanical analysis (seeds/fruits, wood charcoal). Results in al-Qusūr indicate that plant food consumption relied on cereals (Asian rice, hulled barley, free-threshing wheat), pulses (lentil), fruits (date), herbs (coriander) and vegetables (possible spinach). Discoveries of Asian rice and possible spinach underline the role played by the Christian communities as diffusion agent of new crops in the region. If the former has been very likely imported from neighbouring areas (Mesopotamia, Iran), the latter may have represented agrarian innovation on Failaka as first mention of this crop in the Gulf

    No full text
This dissertation presents a critical edition, supplemented by a literary commentary, of Ovide moralisé’s 14th book up to verse 3550, based on all known manuscripts – excluding Z family due to the significant rewriting observed in this branch. A codicological analysis and a collation of the fifteen known witnesses, conducted using Chrysocollate and Classical Text Editor, have confirmed previous scholarship’s selection of manuscript A1 (Rouen, BM, ms. 1044) as the reference manuscript. This work has led to the establishment of the text with a multi-layered apparatus, critical notes, a glossary and an index of proper names. The paratext (marginal glosses, rubrics, etc.) has been edited separately, and a codicological table has been compiled. In addition to textual editing, stemmatic analysis has confirmed several previously identified families, while also revealing stemmatic specificities particular to the 14th book – the considerable length of the Ovide moralisé explaining divergences in stemma across different books. The linguistic study highlights the coexistence of neologisms and archaisms, a characteristic feature of a language in transition from Old to Middle French, as well as the presence of regional lexemes, which seem to confirm that the author originates from the Loire basin. Finally, the content of the text has been carefully examined. The source analysis has identified borrowings from several distinctiones collections, thus providing an initial answer regarding the origins of the Christian interpretations of the Ovide moralisé, which are particularly central in the 14th book. Moreover, the literary study emphasises that this book, centered on the anagogical reading of fables, is structured around the notion of translatio, which operates a dual transition: from the mythological world to the Christian one, and from physical journey to the inner journey of conversion, in a perspective influenced by Bonaventure.

    No full text
Guinevere is constantly present in the Matter of Britain. Despite acting as an essential reference point in the Arthurian world, King Arthur's wife appears in multiple competing versions of his myth before settling into the role of Lancelot's lover. Through a literary investigation spanning the entire medieval period, this thesis analyzes mechanisms of competition, selection, and consolidation that led to the construction through consensus of a “canonical” GuinevereFrom a methodological perspective, the research consists of a reflection on characters, the nature of fiction, of medieval literary genres, theories of reception and reading, and the question of the canon. This theory underpins the analysis of a network of textual dynamics. Furthermore, the social and political history of the last four centuries of the Middle Ages, the history of representations, and gender studies allow us to examine some of the issues involved in selecting a particular version of Guinevere. Indeed, while the fictional queen is not a reflection of “real” medieval women, the tensions that lead to the choice of a certain definition of the character reveal some of the value system shared by a community of readers. The first part of the thesis contrasts competing versions of Guinevere in a synchronic approach: several classifications are considered, which examine the relationship that each version of the character has with criteria such as literary genre or text form. At first glance, chronicles and romances offer competing definitions of Arthur's wife. It also seems possible to isolate characteristics of the character that are typical of lais. In romance, the opposition between verse and prose allows us to identify different narrative possibilities for the Queen of Logres. The most functional distinction remains that between the canonical version of Guinevere (i.e., the version of Guinevere who loves Lancelot) and the non-canonical versions of the character. The second part, which is more diachronic, traces the stages of formation and dissemination of the canon. It also examines the discursive, social, and political context in which such a consensus emerged. The study focuses first on the Vulgate Cycle, a cycle of prose romances written in the 13th century, which is likely the starting point of the process that led to the establishment of a canonical definition of Guinevere. The cycle brings together all the versions of the character described in earlier literature: it recounts their competition, selects a legitimate version, and invalidates what it calls the “false Guinevere”. Widely accepted by readers, the definition of the queen chosen by the Vulgate Cycle spread widely in literature and became established as canonical. To examine the social and political issues surrounding this canon, we must start with what it opposes: clearly, the most contentious aspects of Guinevere are linked to the character's female gender. By comparing the contradictory discourses surrounding Arthur's wife throughout the period and examining the historical context in which the canonical version of the queen prevailed, the study ultimately attempts to identify what Guinevere represents for her readers and, (to a much lesser extent), for her female readers in the Middle Ages.

    No full text
Jean Lamesfeld was one of the main architects of the settlement of the Banat Swabians in France after 1949. His career is an obvious example of agency. This former Romanian civil servant distinguished himself through his ability to mobilise social and rhetorical resources in the post-war context. Integrated into the political networks of the Banat German minority in exile, he took up the cause of the Banat people’s French identity. This discourse appealed both to officers of Lorraine and Alsatian origin in Austria, which was occupied by the Allies in 1945, and to leading Christian Democrats in France. The success of his initiative contrasted with the failure of that led by the Banat movement’s leaders in occupied Germany. This can be explained, among other things, by his choice to promote agricultural activity. The strategy ensured a match between the professional profile of the migrants and a political priority shared by certain institutional actors in France (Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Population, employers’ trade unions, prefectures). After 1962, however, the model became outdated. Jean Lamesfeld then accompanied a cultural transition among his fellow countrymen. Their rural settlement – they constitute a significant group in a village in south-eastern France – allowed for a strong territorial identification and thus enabled them to exist on the world map of the Banat Swabians diaspora.

    No full text
International audienceIn recent French news, a journalist was suspended for comparing the violence of the French conquest in Algeria to the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre perpetrated by a Waffen SS division. The first decades of the French presence in Algeria gave rise to numerous publications - some of them very recent - describing the massacres and violence associated with the conquest, leading some authors to equate this colonial period with genocide . Public opinion at the time, stunned by this tragedy, now seems to be discovering these facts, so much so that the burden of memory associated with the war of independence and decolonization has obscured the early days of colonization.School curricula have contributed to the transmission of a partial history of this period, since the Algerian War of Independence and its memories were for a long time the sole prism of French colonization in Algeria. But since 2019, the time of conquest and the study of colonial societies, including resistance practices, have opened up new perspectives for a transmission of the long history of dominated Algeria. Significant changes were made to secondary school curricula as early as 2008, when the colonial period was viewed from the standpoint of the territories and societies produced. Algeria is nonetheless a possible, but not compulsory, place for young pupils to approach “the developed example of a colonial society, to give a more concrete view of colonial domination and its effects in various fields .” In high school curricula this settlement colony is explicitly mentioned since 2019, as part of the theme devoted to “The Third Republic before 1914 - a political regime, a colonial empire”. Mention of the “special case of Algeria (conquered from 1830 to 1847), organized as a French department in 1848”, or the injunction to deal with the Algerian code de l'indigénat “generalized to all French colonies ”, prompt the teacher to approach French colonization in Algeria in its early stages, and to place it at the heart of a more general reflection on the colonial Republic, whose “self-proclaimed generosity coupled with a discourse of assertion of power, masks the violent enslavement of peoples and the racism inherent in the enterprise ”.These renewed contents require the development of new in-service training programs for history and geography teachers. Until now, they have often been reluctant to teach about the Algerian War of Independence and its memories fearing their lack of knowledge and the possible reactions of pupils. Now, they find themselves even more at a loss when it comes to teaching about the early days of the French presence on the other side of the Mediterranean. As a result, the number of training days organized by the French education authorities has multiplied, calling on historians to offer lectures linked to this new school knowledge. In contrast to the “roman national,” these new curricula are reshaping the teaching of colonial history, and are likely to produce new public knowledge.L’actualité française récente a vu un journaliste suspendu pour avoir comparé les violences de la conquête française en Algérie au massacre d’Oradour-sur-Glane perpétré par une division de la Waffen SS.

    No full text

Source Agritrop Cirad (https://agritrop.cirad.fr/615921/)International audienceMalaria remains a major global health challenge. Understanding the research progress of the potential innovative tools is important for malaria elimination. This scoping review aims to explore China's research and development (R&D) advances from 2013–2023 in addressing the current challenges and contributing to global malaria elimination. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), this review searched the English and Simplified Chinese data sources from five databases. A total of 11,112 English articles and 2,944 Chinese articles were retrieved. After screening, 44 English and 13 Chinese articles were included. Key advancements were identified in three domains: vector control, pathogen screening and diagnosis, and prevention and treatment. Innovations in vector control include studies such as the use of Serratia strains and symbiont-mediated RNAi approaches to block malaria transmission. Advances in pathogen screening and diagnosis feature biosensor development, AI monitoring technologies, and novel amplification gene and nucleic acid detection technologies. In prevention and treatment, artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) remain a cornerstone, with additional progress in industrial pharmaceuticals and technologies already in field and semi-field-testing stages. This review underscores the importance of leveraging China's R&D capacity to meet global challenges. To maximize impact, we call for global attention to strengthening international collaboration with China in malaria R&D to accelerate the commercialization, regulatory approval, and large-scale deployment of innovations

Determination of 22 mycotoxins in wheat grains cultivated in two Moroccan climatic areas by UHPLC-MS/MS

    No full text
International audienceMycotoxins are toxic metabolites naturally produced by toxigenic fungal species on agricultural products, such as cereals. This work aimed at investigating the co-occurrence of 22 mycotoxins in 248 wheat grain samples collected at preharvest, postharvest, and storage stages. Mycotoxins were determined using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Results showed that wheat from the littoral area showed higher contamination rates (53 %) compared to the continental area (31.5 %). Furthermore, no difference was observed between the contamination of soft and durum wheat. Regarding mycotoxin co-occurrence, 16.4, 6.8, and 6.8 % of soft wheat, and 18.7, 18.7, and 15.6 % of durum wheat were contaminated with 2, 3, and 4 mycotoxins, respectively. Four samples (3 soft and 1 durum) exceeded regulatory limits adopted by Moroccan and European regulations. Wheat contamination by mycotoxins highlighted the need for regular monitoring to reduce the negative impact on the consumers
