The STICS soil-crop model: A generic model to simulate the functioning of agroecosystems

    No full text
Source Agritrop Cirad (https://agritrop.cirad.fr/616765/)International audienceThis chapter offers a general presentation of the STICS soil-crop model. Through numerous illustrations dealing notably with genetic x environment x management interactions, it presents an overview of the wide domain of validity of the model, along with its performances, demonstrating its potential for a wide range of agronomic and environmental applications. Since the beginning of its story in the early 90's, STICS has been able to remain a generic and robust model that allows to simulate the functioning of agro-ecosystems, both in temperate and tropical environments. As highlighted in this chapter, and particularly in the last two sections, many efforts were, and are still, put to keep the model up-to-date and in a permanent state of evolution towards better representation of cropping systems, allowing to analyze novel research and applied questions

    No full text

    No full text
Source Agritrop Cirad (https://agritrop.cirad.fr/616080/) * Autres projets (id;sigle;titre): PICT-2018-04254;;(ARG) Tecnologıas Combinadas de Fermentacion Solida y Deshidratacion Para la Mejora de la Bioaccesibilidad de Carotenoides y Tocoferoles Naturales en Alimentos// ;;(ARG) Productos Alimentarios Intermedios obtenidos a base de maız y frutas//International audienceThis research explores the semi-solid fermentation (SSF) of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa wild) in combination with mango–orange (Mangifera indica–Citrus sinensis) juice as a sustainable and innovative approach to food processing. Quinoa, renowned for its rich nutritional profile, presents challenges due to the presence of antinutrients that can inhibit nutrient absorption. By employing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from kefir in the fermentation process, this study aims to enhance the bioavailability of essential nutrients while concurrently reducing the levels of antinutritional factors. The results indicate that fermentation leads to a significant increase in protein content, phytosterols, and antioxidant properties, while facilitating the conversion of bound phenolic compounds into more bioavailable forms. The incorporation of mango–orange juice enriched the nutritional profile of the product but lowered the pH, inhibiting microbial growth and necessitating a pH regulator to improve fermentation. Overall, this work contributes to the development of a probiotic-rich, functional beverage that not only supports food security but also aligns with sustainable food practices and promotes the nutritional health of populations where quinoa is a dietary staple. Further investigations will focus on optimizing fermentation conditions and exploring additional quinoa varieties to enhance product quality and health benefits

Dynamics of Infragravity Waves Across the Southern Reef Barrier of Mayotte, Indian Ocean

    No full text
International audienceDue to climate change, tropical islands are being increasingly exposed to coastal hazards. Under energetic incident swells, infragravity (IG) waves can have a key contribution to extreme water levels and flooding, but their dynamics at barrier reef remains little studied. In this context, this study analyses IG wave generation mechanisms and transformations across a barrier reef to the southwest of Mayotte (Indian Ocean), combining a new comprehensive field dataset with phase resolving wave modelling. This analysis reveals that IG waves are mostly breakpoint-forced and suffer a substantial dissipation by bottom friction, particularly at low tide. Numerical experiments with reduced bottom friction representing a degraded coral reef suggest that IG waves would grow by about 20% across the reef at high tide. This study highlights the key role of coral reefs to dissipate IG waves and hence limit extreme water levels and subsequent coastal hazards.</div

Deep connections: exploring the genetic connectivity of mesophotic and shallow-water populations of the sponge Axinella polypoides

    No full text
International audienceMesophotic sponge grounds (MSG), which are known as local biodiversity hotspots along the Eastern Mediterranean, have been suggested to serve as refugia for threatened species from shallower habitats. However, to understand their role as a refuge, their connectivity to shallow habitats should be assessed. This study evaluates the genetic connectivity of the broadcasting sponge Axinella polypoides, which inhabits both shallow and mesophotic zones, across two scales: (1) geographically, between Eastern and Western Mediterranean populations, and (2) bathymetrically, between shallow and MSG populations along the Israeli coast. Using ddRADseq (N = 106, 2,295 SNPs), significant genetic differentiation was observed between Eastern and Western Mediterranean populations, whereas panmixia was identified in Eastern populations. A reduced dataset (N = 95, 5,400 SNPs) revealed subtle genetic substructure differences between shallow and mesophotic populations, particularly at Achziv. Moreover, shallow populations were generally less genetically divergent than mesophotic ones, except for Rosh-Carmel mesophotic population, which showed higher gene flow with shallow populations. Herzliya shallow population was identified as a key gene source. These results underscore the Eastern Mediterranean MSG’s role as refugia for A. polypoides, and possibly for species with similar life-history traits. Our findings emphasize the importance of protecting these habitats, especially given the increased anthropogenic and climate-driven pressure
