Reliable characterization of sound features in fishes begins in open-water environments
No full textInternational audienceMany fishes use sounds to communicate in a wide range of behavioral contexts. In monitoring studies, these sounds can be used to detect and identify species. However, being able to confidently link a sound to the correct emitting species requires precise acoustical characterization of the signals in controlled conditions. For practical reasons, this characterization is often performed in small sized aquaria, which, however, may cause sound distortion, and prevents an accurate description of sound characteristics that will ultimately impede sound-based species identification in open-water environments. This study compared the sounds features of five specimens of the silverspot squirrelfish Sargocentron caudimaculatum recorded at sea and in aquaria of different sizes and materials. Our results point out that it is preferable to record fish sounds in an open-water environment rather than in small aquaria because acoustical features are affected (sound duration and dominant frequency) when sounds are recorded in closed environments as a result of reverberation and resonance. If not possible, it is recommended that (1) sound recordings be made in plastic or plexiglass aquaria with respect to glass aquaria and (2) aquaria with the largest dimensions and volumes be chosen

No full textInternational audienceSeveral research studies have suggested that negative social representations associated with mathematics have an impact on school performance. These representations are the product of a culture, develop within a learning ecosystem and are dependent on the socioeconomic context. In some post-colonial territories, for example, they have been shaped by prejudices and stereotypes inherited from the colonial past. This article presents the results of a study conducted among primary school pupils in two postcolonial contexts, Senegal (N=2973) and Martinique (N=2710) using a psychometric tool, the Test de Repérage des Difficultés en Mathématiques.Diverse ricerche hanno suggerito che le rappresentazioni sociali negative associate alla matematica hanno un impatto sul rendimento scolastico. Queste rappresentazioni sono il prodotto di una cultura, si sviluppano all'interno di un ecosistema di apprendimento e dipendono dal contesto socio-economico. In alcuni territori postcoloniali, ad esempio, sono state modellate da pregiudizi e stereotipi ereditati dal passato coloniale. No full textPour une publication sur Épisciences.International audienceWhile the actors of cultural renaissances in French Polynesia do not hesitate to mobilize historical, archeological or anthropological research work as means of knowing the precolonial past, the scientific field, especially the French-speaking researchers, continue to overlook and discredit this cultural enunciation. The historicity of the practices and the aims pursued within the framework of these renaissances are thus questioned, revealing the still decisive influence of a theory that has nevertheless been undermined elsewhere in the Pacific: the invention of tradition.Alors que les actrices et les acteurs des renaissances culturelles en Polynésie française n’hésitent pas à mobiliser des travaux de recherche (historique, archéologique, anthropologique, etc.) comme moyens de connaître le passé précolonial, le champ scientifique continue d’adresser à cette énonciation culturelle une fin de non-recevoir. Developing and adult reef fish show rapid light‐induced plasticity in their visual system
No full textInternational audienceThe visual capabilities of fish are optimized for their ecology and light environment over evolutionary time. Similarly, fish vision can adapt to regular changes in light conditions within their lifetime, e.g., ontogenetic or seasonal variation. However, we do not fully understand how vision responds to irregular short-term changes in the light environment, e.g., algal blooms and light pollution. In this study, we investigated the effect of short-term exposure to unnatural light conditions on opsin gene expression and retinal cell densities in juvenile and adult diurnal reef fish (convict surgeonfish; Acanthurus triostegus). Results revealed phenotypic plasticity in the retina across ontogeny, particularly during development. The most substantial differences at both molecular and cellular levels were found under constant dim light, while constant bright light and simulated artificial light at night had a lesser effect. Under dim light, juveniles and adults increased absolute expression of the cone opsin genes, sws2a, rh2c and lws, within a few days and juveniles also decreased densities of cones, inner nuclear layer cells and ganglion cells. These changes potentially enhanced vision under the altered light conditions. Thus, our study suggests that plasticity mainly comes into play when conditions are extremely different to the species' natural light environment, i.e., a diurnal fish in “constant night”. Finally, in a rescue experiment on adults, shifts in opsin expression were reverted within 24 h. Overall, our study showed rapid, reversible light-induced changes in the retina of A. triostegus, demonstrating phenotypic plasticity in the visual system of a reef fish throughout life
Like a rolling stone: Colonization and migration dynamics of the gray reef shark (<i>Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos</i>)
No full textInternational audienceDesigning appropriate management plans requires knowledge of both the dispersal ability and what has shaped the current distribution of the species under consideration. Here, we investigated the evolutionary history of the endangered gray reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) across its range by sequencing thousands of RADseq loci in 173 individuals in the Indo-Pacific (IP). We first bring evidence of the occurrence of a range expansion (RE) originating close to the Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA) where two stepping-stone waves (east and westward) colonized almost the entire IP. Coalescent modeling additionally highlighted a homogenous connectivity (Nm ~ 10 per generation) throughout the range, and isolation by distance model suggested the absence of barriers to dispersal despite the affinity of C. amblyrhynchos to coral reefs. This coincides with long-distance swims previously recorded, suggesting that the strong genetic structure at the IP scale (FST ~ 0.56 between its ends) is the consequence of its broad current distribution and organization in a large number of demes. Our results strongly suggest that management plans for the gray reef shark should be designed on a range-wide rather than a local scale due to its continuous genetic structure. We further contrasted these results with those obtained previously for the sympatric but strictly lagoon-associated Carcharhinus melanopterus, known for its restricted dispersal ability. Carcharhinus melanopterus exhibits a similar RE dynamic but is characterized by a stronger genetic structure and a nonhomogeneous connectivity largely dependent on local coral reefs availability. This sheds new light on shark evolution, emphasizing the roles of IAA as source of biodiversity and of life-history traits in shaping the extent of genetic structure and diversity
Le Centre d’expérimentation du Pacifique pendant les essais nucléaires atmosphériques en Polynésie française entre 1963 et 1975 : une machine d’origine française pour une bombe française ?
No full textInternational audienceEntre 1966 et 1996, 193 essais nucléaires, dont 46 atmosphériques ont lieu en Polynésie française, territoire d’outre-mer français du Pacifique Sud. L’implantation du Centre d’expérimentation du Pacifique (CEP) est réalisée à grande vitesse entre 1963 et 1966 alors que la France n’est pas en mesure de fournir dans des délais suffisants le matériel et les technologies pour procéder aux expérimentations. Dès lors, le CEP est-il un instrument purement d’origine française de par l’origine du matériel civil et militaire ?S’inscrivant dans les panels proposés par le colloque, cette communication montrera que le CEP a recours à des technologies de pointe américaines et européennes pour mesurer la puissance de la bombe nucléaire et les retombées radioactives, prélever les substances radioactives et constituer la force de frappe. Les sources américaines ainsi que les archives françaises du Service historique de la défense de Vincennes et du Centre des archives diplomatiques de la Courneuve mettent en lumière l’assistance technique et scientifique des États-Unis et des pays européens et surtout la livraison de matériel militaire « made in USA » : ballons, calculateurs IBM, pièces pour avions de prélèvements radioactifs, outils de mesure, matériels d’environnement et de diagnostics, câbles, navires remorqueurs, matériels de travaux publics, entre autres. Les livraisons de matériel sont discutées au plus haut niveau politique, à Washington qu’à Paris. La dépendance aux équipements étrangers est telle que les Français redoutent les conséquences du Traité de Moscou de 1963 sur l’approvisionnement en matériel du CEP et les visites scientifiques dans des laboratoires étrangers. Il s’agit donc à la fois d’une communication d’histoire militaire, politique et diplomatique autour de la circulation de matériel pour procéder aux essais nucléaires afin de montrer que l’indépendance nationale dans le domaine du nucléaire militaire prônée par le général de Gaulle est à questionner
APC : La fonction de commissaire du gouvernement prochainement pourvue ?
No full textArticle de vulgarisation scientifiqueL’Autorité polynésienne de la concurrence est une autorité administrative indépendante, mais cela n’empêche pas qu’un « Commissaire du gouvernement » y soit dépêché. On peut regretter l’appellation un brin stalinienne, mais sa fonction est tout à fait légitime, puisqu’il s’agit d’informer le gouvernement sur les enjeux des dossiers et lui permettre de formuler des observations. Ce qui, en l’occurrence, est bien normal puisqu’il faut se rappeler que la politique de concurrence est une sous-partie de la politique économique du Pays et qu’en la matière, la seule légitimité démocratique est celle du gouvernement dont la composition résulte du choix des urnes. Certaines procédures plus complexes, comme le pouvoir d’évocation (article LP. 310-7-1) impliquent aussi que le gouvernement soit au fait des procédures en temps réel, du moins pour le contrôle des concentrations. En toute hypothèse, ces observations ne lient pas l’Autorité qui reste indépendante.Or, depuis la prise de fonctions du nouveau gouvernement, ce poste de commissaire du gouvernement est vacant. Non pas que la fonction « tombe » avec un changement de majorité, mais l’article LP. 610-2 III du code de la concurrence dispose que « le commissaire du gouvernement (…) est choisi parmi les fonctionnaires et agents non titulaires de catégorie A ». Rappelons que le précédent commissaire du gouvernement, fonctionnaire aujourd’hui retraité, avait été nommé en qualité de directeur de cabinet du Ministre de l’Economie.
