Insegnare il calcolo mentale in contesti multiculturali: aspetti cognitivi, socioculturali e didattici

    No full text

International audienceSeveral research works have suggested that, in some marginalized and peripheral contexts, the low achievement of students in the field of mathematics is correlated with the negative representations associated with this field of knowledge, produced by cultural prejudices and stereotypes vehiculated by social institutions (as school) and families. Following this hypothesis, this paper presents the results of a study conducted in a multicultural context, the French West Indies public primary school system, using a psychometric tool (Mathematical School Readiness Test. N= 2710), combined with a sociological survey on mental representations of mathematics (N= 86). The results confirmed the pivotal role played by didactic issues and identify some teaching strategies aimed to facilitate the learning process associated with mental calculation

Article de vulgarisation scientifiqueOn January 24, 2023, a hearing was held at the Administrative Court of French Polynesia in the case of the appeal against Order No. 654 CM of May 6, 2022 amending the regulatory part of the Competition Code. The public rapporteur recommended the cancellation of two important provisions which aim to reinforce the power of action of the president of the Polynesian Competition Authority (PCA) over the investigation department, at the risk of harming the separation of the investigation and decision functions.1. A brief review of recent developments in the Competition Code2. Two provisions of the order should be cancelled3. Interest to act and (im)possibilities of action4. Disciplinary power and appeal against dismissal5. What are the prospects in the current context?

    No full text
International audienceIn this paper, 2 × 2 zero-sum games are studied under the following assumptions: (1) One of the players (the leader) commits to choose its actions by sampling a given probability measure (strategy); (2) The leader announces its action, which is observed by its opponent (the follower) through a binary channel; and (3) the follower chooses its strategy based on the knowledge of the leader's strategy and the noisy observation of the leader's action. Under these conditions, the equilibrium is shown to always exist. Interestingly, even subject to noise, observing the actions of the leader is shown to be either beneficial or immaterial for the follower. More specifically, the payoff at the equilibrium of this game is upper bounded by the payoff at the Stackelberg equilibrium (SE) in pure strategies; and lower bounded by the payoff at the Nash equilibrium, which is equivalent to the SE in mixed strategies. Finally, necessary and sufficient conditions for observing the payoff at equilibrium to be equal to its lower bound are presented. Sufficient conditions for the payoff at equilibrium to be equal to its upper bound are also presented

    No full text

The multi-level regulation of clownfish metamorphosis by thyroid hormones

    No full text
International audienceMost marine organisms have a biphasic life cycle during which a pelagic larva is transformed into a radically different juvenile. In vertebrates the role of thyroid hormones (TH) in triggering this transition is well known, but how the morphological and physiological changes are integrated in a coherent way with the ecological transition remains poorly explored. To gain insight into this question, we performed an integrative analysis of metamorphosis of a marine teleost, the clownfish Amphiprion ocellaris. We reveal how TH coordinate a change in color vision as well as a major metabolic shift in energy production, hence highlighting its central integrative role in regulating this transformation. By manipulating the activity of LXR, a major regulator of metabolism, we also reveal a tight link between metabolic changes and metamorphosis progression. Strikingly, we observed that these regulations are at play in the wild revealing how hormones coordinate energy needs with available resources during life cycle

    No full text
In this paper, the worst-case probability measure over the data is introduced as a tool for characterizing the generalization capabilities of machine learning algorithms. More specifically, the worst-case probability measure is a Gibbs probability measure and the unique solution to the maximization of the expected loss under a relative entropy constraint with respect to a reference probability measure. Fundamental generalization metrics, such as the sensitivity of the expected loss, the sensitivity of the empirical risk, and the generalization gap are shown to have closed-form expressions involving the worst-case data-generating probability measure. Existing results for the Gibbs algorithm, such as characterizing the generalization gap as a sum of mutual information and lautum information, up to a constant factor, are recovered. A novel parallel is established between the worst-case data-generating probability measure and the Gibbs algorithm. Specifically, the Gibbs probability measure is identified as a fundamental commonality of the model space and the data space for machine learning algorithms.

Review of fish fauna and recently conducted fisheries research in French Polynesia

    No full text
International audienceTo date, 1301 fish species have been recorded within French Polynesia's 4,541,204-km² exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and from the territory's 14,690 km² of inland waters. Most species were found within the Society Islands, which have been more closely studied, than in the Austral Islands, Tuamotu Archipelago, Marquesas Islands and Gambier Islands, in that order. Of the 1038 species of reef fish that inhabit the lagoons and top 60 m of the outer reef slopes of French Polynesia, the faunal lists from the western part of the EEZ show a transition between the fish of the continental Pacific in the west and the island Pacific to the east. Fish in the Austral Islands (in the south) show affinities with faunal lists of the cold zones of the coral Pacific. Finally, in the Marquesas, fish species are abundant and highly endemic. A total of 27 species inhabit the freshwater areas of French Polynesia. Three types of fisheries are practised in French Polynesia: deep-sea fisheries up to the boundaries of French Polynesia's EEZ, coastal fisheries and lagoon fisheries. Subsistence fishing is ubiquitous, despite the widespread occurrence of ciguatera. Fishing grounds are well managed
