Life stage-specific habitat use and trophic ecology of the Critically Endangered Great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran)
International audienceThe great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List and is one of the most iconic shark species worldwide. Despite its emblematic status, there are major knowledge gaps regarding its habitat use and ecology -particularly during early life stages. In recent years, however, considerable advances have been made in our understanding of great hammerhead biology -especially in previously data-deficient regions such as the northern Indian Ocean and South Pacific Islands. Here, we review and reassess the literature on the habitat use and dietary ecology of S. mokarran, with specific consideration of these factors across the species life stages. This review provides new key insights into the species' habitat requirements, which are essential to assess its resilience to climate change. Emerging findings suggests that S. mokarran may have more limited dispersal capabilities than previously assumed, exhibiting restricted migratory behavior and a stronger reliance on coastal or insular habitats. Moreover, recent research has begun to describe previously undocumented critical habitats, including mating, pupping, and nursery areas-vital for population recovery. Regional differences in habitat use and diet are becoming evident, highlighting the importance of regionspecific assessments of vulnerability and population-level conservation strategies. In this context, some regions-such as the South Pacific-may play a particularly important role in the species' survival and thus merit increased research and conservation efforts.RESUMÉLe grand requin-marteau (Sphyrna mokarran), classé en « En Danger Critique d'Extinction » par la Liste rouge de l'UICN, figure parmi les espèces de requins les plus emblématiques au monde. A PARAU : TE TAUMATAROA (Tahitien) / TAMATAROA (Paumotu) ’Ua riro te Taumataroa (Sphyrna mokarran), o tei tāpupu hia i roto i te mau ’ānimara ’ati moura’a i roto mai i te tāpura ’ura a te UICN, ei ma’o pihi ’ā’ia i roto i te ao nei.
Living Among the Reefs: Insights and Perspectives from Island Archaeology in the Pacific
International audienceFocusing on the Pacific Islands, we explore the long relationship between human communities and coral reefs through the lens of archaeology. Building upon multidisciplinary approaches as well as new and emerging methods, we present various ways of reconstructing complex marine socio-ecosystems in the past and highlight the future challenges posed by global climate change
International audienceThe per se prohibition of exclusive import rights is often at the center of debates on the high cost of living in overseas territories and on how competition law should be adapted to the specificities of small island economies. This article demonstrates, however, that such a prohibition is not based on any scientific or objective analysis of territorial exclusivities, which in fact generally allow for significant efficiency gains. A return of French overseas competition law to the general principles of competition law – through the systematic application of the rule of reason – would therefore be desirable, in line with international practice. For nearly two decades, Christian Montet and Florent Venayre have conducted research on the Polynesian economy, with the objective of improving the quality of economic regulation and promoting the development of competitive markets. In 2013, their book Competition Law in Tahiti: A Utopia? was awarded the Vogel Prize ‘Coup de cœur’ in recognition of its explicit aim: to encourage the establishment of a competition law in Tahiti.

Snapshots of coral reef biodiversity and challenges in a time of crisis
International audienceCoral reefs are sanctuaries for a large portion of our planet’s biodiversity, but their rapid decline begs critical questions about what exactly is being lost, what are the driving forces that determine decline or resilience, and what are the implications for life on Earth. To address these questions, we synthesize the state of knowledge on the diversity of coral reef life forms at different scales of biological and ecological organization, encompassing variability in genes, biomolecules, cells, organs, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, socio-ecosystems, and biogeoclimatic systems, with a particular focus on French tropical overseas. We discuss research pathways to address knowledge gaps in various scientific disciplines, covering genetics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics), morphology, ethology, bio-acoustics, demography, functional ecology, macro-ecology, landscape ecology, human and social sciences, bioclimatology, and their cross-disciplinary interactions. Based on contributions from a team of coral reef experts working in coral reef regions spread around the world, our synthesis supports a better understanding of the various dimensions of coral reef biodiversity and proposes future research orientations for improving our knowledge of nature and its preservation. Given the rapid decline of coral reefs, and how much is still unknown, this work underscores the urgency of cross-scale biodiversity investigations for a systemic understanding of the drivers of biodiversity distribution and dynamics
The 2-torsion in the Farrell--Tate cohomology of PSL(4,Z), and torsion subcomplex reduction via discrete Morse theory
Manuscript (authors' file) accepted for publication in the Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra. In the present paper, we use discrete Morse theory to provide a new implementation of torsion subcomplex reduction for arithmetic groups. This leads both to a simpler algorithm as well as runtime improvements. To demonstrate the technique, we compute the mod 2 Farrell-Tate cohomology of PSL(4,Z)
Directed conservation of the world’s reef sharks and rays
International audienceMany shark populations are in decline around the world, with severe ecological and economic consequences. Fisheries management and marine protected areas (MPAs) have both been heralded as solutions. However, the effectiveness of MPAs alone is questionable, particularly for globally threatened sharks and rays (‘elasmobranchs’), with little known about how fisheries management and MPAs interact to conserve these species. Here we use a dedicated global survey of coral reef elasmobranchs to assess 66 fully protected areas embedded within a range of fisheries management regimes across 36 countries. We show that conservation benefits were primarily for reef-associated sharks, which were twice as abundant in fully protected areas compared with areas open to fishing. Conservation benefits were greatest in large protected areas that incorporate distinct reefs. However, the same benefits were not evident for rays or wide-ranging sharks that are both economically and ecologically important while also threatened with extinction. We show that conservation benefits from fully protected areas are close to doubled when embedded within areas of effective fisheries management, highlighting the importance of a mixed management approach of both effective fisheries management and well-designed fully protected areas to conserve tropical elasmobranch assemblages globally
International audienceThis article aims to identify the parental representations relating to languages and the linguistic practices of parents and their children at the beginning of kindergarten on the island of Moorea, in French Polynesia. The Polynesian historical context since the first contacts with the western world gradually operates a social and linguistic transformation resulting in an unequal social distribution of the French and Tahitian languages which has an impact on the representations that the speakers have of their languages. Indeed, in Dasen’s integrated theoretical framework (Dasen, 2007, 2019), parental ethnotheories, parental representations and beliefs that influence the personal characteristics of the child, are subject to ecological, economic and cultural contexts. These ethnotheories have an influence on linguistic practices (Maurer, 2016). For Lambert (1974), in particular, in the context of additive bilingualism, linguistic benefits are observed. Conversely, in the context of subtractive bilingualism, negative effects are observed at the linguistic level. In terms of methodology, the declared linguistic environments of the families were collected by a questionnaire survey of 158 parents of children at the beginning of kindergarten on the island of Moorea. The results of the analyzes show positive parental representations of the values of French accompanied by representations of favorable practices of this language associated with a majority practice of French by parents and their children. On the other hand, positive parental representations of the values of Tahitian are accompanied by representations of unfavorable practices of this language and are associated with a lack of practice of Tahitian by parents and their children.L’objectif de l’article est d’identifier les représentations parentales relatives aux langues ainsi que les pratiques linguistiques de parents et de leurs enfants en début de scolarité sur l’île de Moorea, en Polynésie française.
