International audienceThis article examines the impact of cultural and dietary change on obesity in French Polynesia. It highlights the socio-cultural and economic transformations that have altered the population's eating habits, leading to a high prevalence of obesity and associated metabolic disorders. The arrival of Europeans and colonisation introduced Western consumption patterns, different social norms and a cash economy, leading to a rapid transition to a sedentary lifestyle. This transition was exacerbated by the massive importation of processed foods of low nutritional quality, amplifying the obesity epidemic. Combating obesity in French Polynesia requires a multi-dimensional approach, coordinating medical, educational and political interventions to prevent and manage this condition. Political and economic challenges must be overcome in order to promote effective public health policies that have lasting benefits for the population.

Erianthus fulvus genome assembly is available at http://sugarcane.zhangjisenlab.cn/SugarcaneDB/#/downloads.The VCF file with 18 million nuclear SNPs, the chloroplast genome assemblies and the KmerCity database including 27 million repeated k-mers are available from the CIRAD Dataverse: https://doi.org/10.18167/DVN1/YOH50G.KmerCity and AdmixKmer pipelines, as well as all the associated programs and original codes developed in this study are available at https://gitlab.cirad.fr/agap/seg/kmercity and https://gitlab.cirad.fr/agap/seg/admixkmer.International audienceHighlights: • Repeated k-mers allow tracing of admixture in complex polyploids such as sugarcane. • Sugarcane domestication involved hybrids between distinct groups of wild S. robustum. • Diversification involved hybridization with wild Saccharum species and Miscanthus. • An unknown Saccharum contributor to modern cultivars was discovered.Summary: Sugarcane is a major crop of unclear origins due to its complex polyploid interspecific genome. We analyzed genome ancestries using whole-genome sequence data from 390 representative accessions based on repeated k-mers and chloroplast phylogeny. The results provided evidence that Saccharum officinarum was domesticated in the New Guinea region from the S. robustum wild species and revealed that its genome is a mosaic involving different S. robustum subgroups. We discovered a wild Saccharum contributor to most modern cultivars, likely originating from East Melanesia. We highlighted two early centers of sugarcane diversification associated with human transport, one in continental Asia through hybridization with different S. spontaneum subgroups and one in the Melanesian and Polynesian islands via hybridization with the discovered ancestor and Miscanthus. Finally, we revealed the genome ancestry of modern cultivars, highlighting untapped wild Saccharum diversity as a source of alleles for breeding programs

Promoting sustainability of giant clam fishing and mariculture in atoll lagoons exposed to marine heat waves
International audienceThe capacity of Pacific fisheries and mariculture to persist in the climate change context is uncertain and will depend on the ability of stakeholders to implement adaptation and resilience-building interventions that mitigate the negative impact of increased temperature. In the Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia, an important population of giant clams Tridacna maxima inhabits Reao’s lagoon and provide islanders a significant income through fishing for the food market and mariculture for the aquarium trade. These activities, however, have already shown signs of vulnerability to Marine Heat Waves (MHW), which raises concern about their sustainability in face of climate change. Spatial and non-spatial management strategies have been implemented in this lagoon, but their relevance in the long term is questioned as they generate inequity issues between farmers and fishers. To help managers implementing new regulations that promote resistance and resilience of these activities to climate change, we followed an inter-disciplinary approach to (1) characterize the vulnerability (exposure and sensibility) of giant clams to temperature increase, (2) assess the potential for compliance and adaptation of fishers and farmers to new regulation measures, and (3) model the giant clam food system under various climatic and socially acceptable management scenarios. The scientific knowledge acquired from this work opens new opportunities for developing tools useful to enhance resistance and resilience of Pacific fisheries and mariculture activities to MHW. This includes: a validated remote-sensing-tool to map sea surface temperature inside atoll lagoons and identify refuge areas; the emergence of a new prototype of mariculture device that reduce the risk of giant clam bleaching by reducing light stress during MHW; and a management strategy evaluation identifying the most promising regulations among candidate scenarios that maximise resistance and resilience of the fishery-and-mariculture system to MHW
