    No full text

    No full text
In this technical report, rigorous statements and formal proofs are presented for both foundational and advanced folklore theorems on the Radon-Nikodym derivative. The cases of conditional and marginal probability measures are carefully considered, which leads to an identity involving the sum of mutual and lautum information suggesting a new interpretation for such a sum.

Back to the Future: Where Do We Stand on the Piscivorous Habits of Conus striatus Nearly 70 Years Later?

    No full text
International audienceNearly 70 years ago, the fish-hunting strategy of the marine gastropod snail Conus striatus Linnaeus, 1758, was unveiled for the first time. Now, Conus striatus is one of the most recognizable and most studied conids, and some toxins (conotoxins) have been characterized from its venom. In his pioneering work, Alan Kohn showed that upon injection of venom through a harpoon-like modified radular tooth, the fish prey of Conus striatus is rapidly immobilized, within a few hundred milliseconds to a couple of seconds. The cocktail of conotoxins induces strong tetanic contractions of all muscles, with visible fasciculation (twitching) of the fish's fins. In this review, we wish to honor the memory of Alan Kohn by summarizing the current knowledge of the venom composition and biological activity of conotoxins of Conus striatus. From the 103 entries of conotoxins from Conus striatus that occur in the Conoserver database, 74 are mature conotoxin sequences and only a dozen or so have been pharmacologically characterized. Surprisingly, the major toxin class responsible for the “taser-like” effect in fish originally observed, the kA-conotoxins, remains poorly understood. Only one three-dimensional structure is known, and the molecular target and mode of action are at best uncertain. This clearly highlights that, despite the vast amount of data accumulated over the years, even for such heavily investigated species as Conus striatus, many important questions remain

Abelian surfaces over finite fields containing no curves of genus 33 or less

    No full text
minor modifications to the exposition. comments are welcomeWe study abelian surfaces defined over finite fields which do not contain any possibly singular curve of genus less than or equal to 33. Firstly, we complete and expand the characterisation of isogeny classes of abelian surfaces with no curves of genus up to 22 initiated by the first author \emph{et al.~}in previous work. Secondly, we show that, for simple abelian surfaces, containing a curve of genus 33 is equivalent to admitting a polarisation of degree 44. Thanks to this result, we can use existing algorithms to check which isomorphism classes in the isogeny classes containing no genus 22 curves have a polarisation of degree 44. Thirdly, we characterise isogeny classes of abelian surfaces with no curves of genus 2\leq 2, containing no abelian surface with a polarisation of degree 44. Finally, we describe the absolutely irreducible genus 33 curves lying on abelian surfaces containing no curves of genus less than or equal to 22, and show that their number of rational points is far from the Serre--Weil bound

[Éthique] Échantillonnages sur animauxInternational audienceTen novel Gram-negative, aerobic, non-sporulating, yellow-pigmented rod-shaped bacterial strains motile by gliding were isolated from marine organisms/environments in French Polynesia. Three of them designated as 190524A05c T , 190524A02b T and 190130A14a T were retrieved from orbicular batfish ( Platax orbicularis ) mucus. Online database comparisons using 16S rRNA amplicons resulted in over 95% similarity to the genus Tenacibaculum . Phylogenetic analyses based on 679 concatenated core protein sequences revealed that strains 190524A05c T , 190524A02b T and 190130A14a T showed the highest similarity to Tenacibaculum skagerrakense DSM 14836 T , Tenacibaculum xiamenense LMG 27422 T and Tenacibaculum holothuriorum S2-2 T , respectively. Digital DNA–DNA hybridization and average nt identity values between strains 190524A05c T , 190524A02b T and 190130A14a T and other type strains were less than 76.25 and 24.1%, respectively. The DNA G+C content was 31.48, 30.66 and 31.98 mol% for strains 190524A05c T , 190524A02b T and 190130A14a T , respectively. Menaquinone-6 was detected as the major isoprenoid quinone in these three strains. The major polar lipids (phosphatidylethanolamine and aminophospholipid) were similar to the chemotaxonomic profile of other species of the genus Tenacibaculum . Strain 190524A05c T contained summed feature 3 (comprising C 16:1 ω7c and/or iso-C 15:0 2-OH), iso-C 15:1 G, iso-C 15:0 and iso-C 17:0 3-OH as the major cellular fatty acids. Strain 190524A02b T contained summed feature 3 (comprising C 16:1 ω7c and/or iso-C 15:0 2-OH), iso-C 15:0 , iso-C 15:1 G and iso-C 17:0 3-OH as the major cellular fatty acids. Strain 190130A14a T contained iso-C 15:1 G, summed feature 3 (comprising C 16:1 ω7c and/or iso-C 15:0 2-OH), iso-C 15:0 and iso-C 17:0 3-OH as the major cellular fatty acids. Based on the phenotypic and molecular features, these three strains represent novel species of the genus Tenacibaculum for which the names Tenacibaculum platacis sp. nov., with 190524A05c T (= CIP 112470 T = DSM 118113 T ) as the type strain; Tenacibaculum vairaonense sp. nov., with 190524A02b T (= CIP 112469 T = DSM 118112 T ) as the type strain; and Tenacibaculum polynesiense sp. nov., with 190130A14a T (= CIP 112468 T = DSM 118111 T ) as the type strain, are proposed

    No full text
