    Phylogenetically problematic Aater cangshanensis gen. et sp. nov. from Southwest China suggests multiple origins of prosternal canal in Molytinae weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

    A new weevil taxon, Aater cangshanensis gen. et sp. nov. is established for a single female specimen sifted from the forest litter on the Cang Shan Mountain Range in Yunnan, China. This small flightless beetle (the combined length of pronotum and elytra is 3.4 mm) has relatively long and straight rostrum, contiguous procoxae and tuberculate elytra with effaced shoulders. Remarkably, the new genus has a prosternal canal on the ventral side of the prothorax. This feature is characteristic to the weevils of the Old World nominal tribe Aminyopini (=Euderini of some authors) and to the China-Nepal genus Niphadomimus (Typoderini). A phylogenetic molecular analysis using an alignment of 2,956 bp from one mitochondrial and two nuclear fragments outputted a mainly inconclusive topology with low backbone resolution. Terminals with prosternal canal were grouped into four clades not most closely related to each other: Aater cangshanensis gen. et sp. nov., Niphadomimus, African Aminyopini and Asian Aminyopini; the latter three clades each with bootstrap support of 100%. The prosternal canal has either evolved more than once, or reversed once or more, or both. The sister group of Aater gen. nov. cannot be reliably identified and, therefore, the new genus is assigned to Molytinae incertae sedis

    Migration policies: a subsidiarity approach

    The answer to the demand for acquis communautaire, which arises from migration and mobility, should be found in a European subsidiarity approach at all levels. This involves: at the local level looking for solutions to the problems of integration and interculturalism; at the national level, the planning of legal flows; and at the supranational level, the political governance of migration movements including relations with the sending countries. The migration issue demands a multiple answer at both European and national level, but local governments also need to be involved, as they are the first to be exposed to the presence of migrants. Daily issues dealing with such problems as housing, school, jobs, health services, and mobility need the institutional presence of local governance, in symbiosis with the planning of national resources and the stability of accepted international relations between sending and receiving countries in the EU context

    Inferences on modeling rainfall-induced shallow landslides from experimental observations on stratified soils

    In this work, we analyzed the results of different soil laboratory tests performed in a flume test apparatus with the aim to describe and quantify some particular aspects of the modelling of soil slip phenomena. In particular, we analyzed the influence, in terms of slope stability, of the thickness of two strata (a cohesive one and a not cohesive one) composing the slope model. To simulate the presence of cohesion, a partially saturated sand was employed, while the same sand but in dry conditions was used to reproduce the not cohesive stratum. The so-constituted slope laboratory model as then submitted to tilting tests, and in each test the thickness of these layers has been varied in order to investigate the influence of this parameter on slope stability. The obtained results have been used to calibrate several parameters and verify specific assumptions of SLIP, a simplified physically-based and well-tested model for the prediction of shallow landslides occurrence

    A relict population of Cymbalophora rivularis on the Pollino Massif, southern Italy (Lepidoptera: Erebidae)

    The first record for South Italy of Cymbalophora rivularis (Ménétriès, 1832) is reported, until now recorded in Italy only for Central Apennine. Three specimens were collected during August-September 2017, in an Acer spp. forest located on Monte Sparviere, a Site of Community Importance within the Pollino National Park. Furthermore, this species was successfully barcoded for the first time. This finding reinforces the biogeographic importance of Pollino Massif as refuge area for relict populations of several animal and plant species

    First records of acclimatized populations of Buprestis dalmatina in Italy (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)

    Buprestis (Ancylocheira) dalmatina Mannerheim, 1837, an E-Mediterranean Buprestid species, is here recorded for the first time from southern Italy (forest areas of Matera province, Basilicata Region). The here reported records of B. dalmatina are based on material collected on Pinus halepensis Mill. in re-forested coastal areas; the species is therefore supposed to have been very likely introduced. Some aspects of the ecological relationships of Buprestis dalmatina with the closely related and syntopic Pinus borers B. humeralis, B. novemmaculata and B. haemorrhoidalis haemorrhoidalis in Southern Italy are also briefly discussed

    Short term change of sea climate and influence on the littoral of Belvedere Marittimo (Cosenza - Italy)

    In Italy, during the last decades, the coasts have undergone an intensification of erosive processes. This has led to many problems due to the proximity of communication routes (like roads and railways) and inhabited areas to the coast. One of the most affected areas is the coast of Belvedere Marittimo, located on the Tyrrhenian side of Calabria, South Italy. The erosional crisis of the beaches is certainly due to the increasingly urbanization of the territory, both coastal and inland, which prevents normal sediment influx that feed the beaches. However, it is equally true that there are wellknown global scale changes of climate, which it is possible that are causing an increase storm intensity of tropical hurricanes and extra tropical storms. The Mediterranean Region has showed different behaviors related to local factors, with some exceptions to the general trend showing an increase of extreme events, related to wind speed and direction and therefore with effects on sea climate. In this scenario, the coast of Belvedere Marittimo will be the area of interest of the project, as previous works on the location has showed a correlation to the shoreline retreat with the increase of wind extreme events, especially in the 2001-2010 period. The decision to focus the research on wind data allows overcoming one of the most common problems of this type of studies in Italy, which is the shortage of wave data. This area has already been object of different sea defenses during the decades, but the breakwaters and groins, built for more than thirty years, did not produce significant progradation of the beaches. The proposed methodology is applicable in a microtidal regime where dominates the wave climate, and is easily exportable on the beach near an anemometric station, capable of providing historical data series thus fill the data gap on the waves. Moreover, the evaluation of changes in speed and direction of the winds / waves will allow a rethinking of the types of defenses along the beaches

    Hydrogeological features of the Monteverde hill eastern slope (Rome urban area, Italy)

    The study area is located in the Monteverde Hill, urban area of the Rome City (Italy). Gravelly-sandy-silty geological formations outcrop in it. The aim of the present study was to outline the local groundwater circulation for contributing to accomplish a drainage system for preventing water infiltration in building basements. Local hydrogeological setting is very fragmented. The stratigraphical, hydrogeological, hydrochemical and piezometric data evidenced the presence of deep saturated sandy levels/lenses, saturated covering excavation soils and shallow mostly unsaturated gravelly/sandy horizons. The main recharge processes of groundwater-bearing bodies are due to direct infiltration from surrounding recharge areas and lateral drainage towards sandy lenses/levels. Two main sectors displaying different reference piezometric heads (about 47-55 in up-hill sector and 24-39 m a.s.l. in down-hill) were evidenced, due to presence of a soil retaining wall acting as a (semi)permeable divide in the middle of the study area. A further lower piezometric head interval (about 13-15 m a.s.l.) was at the base of the slope. All waters may be classified as bicarbonate waters. Strong or long-lasting rainfall did not evidently affected groundwater heads, likely because of diffuse cemented/asphalted paved surfaces. The hydrogeological budget evaluation of the study area suggested groundwater contributions from adjacent aquifers

    Gallivaggio landslide: the geological monitoring, of a rock cliff, for early warning system

    The Gallivaggio rock cliff, in the San Giacomo Filippo district (Sondrio province, Italy) has been monitored by ARPA, Lombardy’s Geological Monitoring Centre (CMG) since 2011. The main mountain passage, route S.S.36, crosses this mountain area. The village of Gallivaggio was built at the beginning of 17th century and now has a restaurant, some houses and the important sanctuary heritage site. ARPA CMG has carried out a variety of on-site observational approaches to manage the geological monitoring in Gallivaggio during the last few years. The first few years of study and monitoring allowed us to categorize two main conditions. The first, a frequent but less hazardous one which is the single block fall. This is impossible to predict and has a 2-22% possibility of overriding the iron nets. The second one is the collapse of 5-6000 cubic meters of bedrock (Truzzo granite) from the top of the rock cliff which was marked by a large fracture. During the winter of 2017/18 the data analysis values acquired, enabled CMG to notify the Lombardy Region Civil Protection of a dangerous acceleration of movement in the rock area regarding the second scenario. Then, on 13th April, from the identified area single rock blocks began to come down and hit the road and sanctuary. During the following days the houses and restaurant were evacuated and the road was closed for 18 hours a day. Lastly, on May 29th, about 5500 cubic meters of rock collapsed and a part of it covered road and impacted the Sanctuary and the bell tower. In conclusion, it is possible to verify that a suitable monitoring network plan and strategy realised by a reliable remote monitoring system, allowed CMG to alert the Civil Protection and the Municipality during a worsening of landslide movements and demonstrates the utility of an organized management of a monitoring geological network
