    Who are the oldest old in Italy? Evidence from the Italian semi-super and supercentenarians survey

    In a country, like Italy, where longevity is one of the most important demographic aspects, it’s crucial to study the population at extreme ages in order to understand the amount and the characteristics of individuals who live so longer. The study of the oldest-old individuals requests necessarily a validated data source not affected by over-coverage or under-coverage. In order to have a yearly corrected population register the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) has developed the SSC survey with the aim of collecting data about alive and deceased semi-super and supercentenarians, and knowing how many of them are really verified. Due to record linkage operations with other ISTAT surveys and to the quality of the data collection, the SSC’s database is not implemented in any other country. It has been (and will be) an important data source to analyse longevity of population in order to contribute to study about lifespan and the human survival and to understand whether the extreme-age mortality plateaus in humans exist or not

    The Impact of new technologies in the engineering classification of rock masses

    The engineering classification of rock masses represents the first stage in the analysis and characterization of rock slopes and road cuts. Among the existing classification methods, four systems are mainly used for mining, tunneling and slope design: the RMR, the Q-system/Q-Slope, the GSI and the SMR. Software has been recently developed for using these classification systems and some, such as Q-system/Q-slope, are also available as smartphone applications, to be directly used on the field. Rock mass parameters necessary for such classification systems are usually obtained through engineering geological analyses along scanlines. Nowadays, the advent of new technologies has led to step-change increase in the quality of data available for the study of rock slopes. These include new remote sensing sensors, platforms, new techniques and software for engineering rock mass analyses. Data obtained from these techniques, integrated with field geomechanical measurements, can improve the quality of engineering rock mass classifications. Furthermore, Geographic Information Systems provide a useful tool for managing such data and performing regional rock mass analyses, suitable in the study of rock slopes and road cut design. In this context, this research aims to analyze: i) the importance of using remote sensing and GIS techniques in engineering rock mass classifications; ii) the advantages of combining different engineering classification systems and iii) the possible use of low-cost technique for engineering design

    Landslide change detection and displacement tracking using nanosatellite imagery: La Montagna landslide, Southern Italy

    Landslides move with spatial and temporal variable velocity. This parameter, being representative of the landslide magnitude, has to be considered in hazard evaluation and mitigation measurement planning, so that it is of dramatic importance to accurately describe landslide kinematics. In the last decade, a new low-cost satellite platform has started acquiring daily data of the earth surface in the form of RGB-NIR images. In this paper, we explore the potential of using these products to make a change detection morphometric analysis and track surface displacement of the actively moving La Montagna landslide in southern Italy, through visual analysis of 12 scenes acquired between October 2018 and March 2019. We validated the reconstructed displacement time series through a comparison with monitoring data acquired using an extensometer. Results from our analysis underline the potential of using satellite imagery characterized by very high revisiting cycle to reconstruct landslide kinematics

    Active faults and related hazards: new insights on the Central Appennine seismotectonics and surface faulting zonation

    The term active and capable fault (ACF) defines an active tectonic structure able to rupture permanently the ground surface. When an ACF represents the expression at surface of a seismogenic source, the study of an ACF involves a twofold aspect: one concerns surface faulting hazard, with engineering implications regarding infrastructures crossing the trace of a ACF, the other concerns the definition of geometric and kinematic characteristics of seismogenic sources, with implications regarding the definition of the seismogenic potential of a given active tectonic structure. Here, we show the results of geological investigations regarding two case studies in the central Apennines. The first site is located near the village of Venere dei Marsi (AQ), where the detailed characterization of geometry and kinematics of a fault splay connected to “San Benedetto dei Marsi – Gioia dei Marsi” active fault segment, allowed us to verify the effectiveness of the ACF territory zonation proposed in “Guidelines for the management of territories affected by Active and Capable Faults” promulgated by the Dipartimento della Protezione Civile Nazionale of Italy in 2015. The second case study is located close to Preci (PG), where field geological investigations were aimed to verify the presence of an ACF in the area of the Sant’Eutizio Abbey severely damaged by the 30 October 2016 Mw 6.5 seismic event, for retrofitting activities, and to characterize the Campi fault segment in terms of recent activity. This allowed to better define the geometric and kinematic characteristics of seismogenic source, responsible for the 2 February 1703 (Mw = 6.8), nucleated by the Norcia active faults system

    Cryptic diversity within the Anisoneura aluco-group (Lepidoptera: Erebidae)

    The aluco-group of the Indo-Australian genus Anisoneura is revised with characterisation of its component species and updating of their distribution. Types of all but one nominal taxa of the group are illustrated. The concept of Anisoneura zeuzeroides Guenée, 1852 is restricted to sole populations from Western New Guinea, while Moluccan (including Kei Islands’) populations previously ascribed to this nominal taxon are distinguished as Anisoneura sphingoides C. Felder, 1861 stat. rev. (= Anisoneura depressa Hulstaert, 1924, syn. nov.), and those from Eastern New Guinea are re-evaluated as Anisoneura papuana Hampson, 1913 stat. rev. The unusual circumstances of the scarce divergence in genitalia characters between species looking externally different (either sphingoides or zeuzeroides vs aluco) and vice versa, that is species almost indistinguishable in habitus albeit strongly differentiated in genitalia (either sphingoides or zeuzeroides vs papuana), is stressed.     Some reflections on the use of composite indicators for measuring health achievements at the subnational level: insights from Portugal

    The exigency of “leaving no one behind”, expressed in the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the existence in some contexts, such as in Portugal, of new competences for local authorities, call for greater attention to the evaluation of policies and monitoring of results at subnational level. This paper scrutinizes the most critical issues in the construction of composite indicators that are intended to analyze health, as interpreted in the SDGs, at the subnational level. First, the main characteristics of the indicators selected by Statistics Portugal to cover Goal 3 will be analyzed. Then, the paper will examine the priorities to be considered during construction of composite indicators, that take into account the structure of the SDGs. A first element concerns the need to deepen the choice of the indicator set on which the composite indicator will be based. Data limitation and the exclusion of some contextual elements hamper the construction of meaningful composite indicators at the subnational level. It is also critical to examine the possible synergies and trade-offs between the various SDG indicators, which directly or indirectly refer to health, and adequately consider these relationships in the aggregation phase
