Dragonfly assemblages in four Mediterranean wetlands of Samos Island, Greece (Odonata)
Dragonflies (Odonata) are considered to be valuable indicators of hydroecosystems. This study reports the composition of the dragonfly assemblages in four wetlands of Samos Island, Greece, in a geographic area especially vulnerable to climate change where a trend towards a drier climate has been observed in the last decades. Dragonfly assemblages have not yet been studied on Samos. The analysis based on the number of different species and their autochthony revealed clear differences among the wetlands. The eutrophic Glyfada Lake, despite its variable hydrology resulting from drought – the seasonal decrease in water availability – harboured the largest diversity of dragonflies, larger than the oligotrophic Mesokampos Lake. The assemblage of the spring and rivulet at Mytilini, although also influenced by drought, had its own set of species of high autochthony. The seasonal brackish lake and marsh of Psili Ammos had the lowest number of species and was dominated by one very abundant breeding species. Drought was the main factor affecting the number and composition of species. The collected data create a reference for the future monitoring of trends in the composition of odonatofauna under the changing climate of Samos Island

Drains influence on the beach groundwater hydrodynamics
The aim of this paper is to investigate the role in the groundwater level dynamics played by drains of a Beach Drainage System (BDS) with different nominal diameters.Three different cases are considered: drained beach without incoming waves; undrained beach with incoming waves, and drained beach with incoming waves. Hence, a preliminary numerical investigation on the hydrodynamics inside a sandy beach is carried out, accounting for the presence of both short water waves and a BDS. The (Volume Averaged) Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations are solved by using the Finite Volume Method, and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) is used to track the groundwater table fluctuations by using an OpenFoam® solver. To represent the draining surface, the atmospheric pressure at the drain boundary is imposed. In order to reproduce the concentrated head losses, a low permeability layer around the drain is used. The model is able to catch the damped behaviour of the water table oscillation inside the sandy porous medium forced by the incoming short waves. In case of drained beaches, the drain dimensions play an important role in the outflow velocities at the boundary of the pipe. On the other hand, the drain diameter does not affect the general behaviour of the groundwater level inside the beach, but within an area close to the drain location
Coastal submerged structures adaptation to sea level rise over different beach profiles
The paper focuses on the analysis of the sea level rise and storms effects on natural or nourished beach profiles protected by submerged breakwaters. The increase in terms of intensity and frequency of extreme sea storms, and water levels produced by climate change, could lead to a deviation from the original trend of the beach. Typical Adriatic beaches will be considered as realistic study cases and a submerged structure for coastal protection of a natural or artificial (nourishment) beach is analysed in order to identify its resilience and its design adaptation. Different scenarios are taken into account, according to the 2019 special report of IPCC on climate change. A numerical model is here provided to evaluate beach response to wave set-up and sea level rise in the case of any beach profile protected by submerged breakwaters. The present model can provide useful information for the adaptation design of an existing defence submerged breakwater against coastal flooding and beach erosion. The shoreline position change, Δy, is evaluated by a large number of simulations varying both wave parameters (wave height Hi, wave length L) and the geometry of breakwater (submergence |Rc| berm width B, structure height hc). Different scenarios of sea level rises, as a consequence of climate change, and of storm conditions are considered in performing numerical simulations
Species delimitation by a geometric morphometric analysis within the genus Pseudoathyreus and description of a new species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Bolboceratidae)
A geometric morphometric analysis, conducted as part of a taxonomic review of the genus Pseudoathyreus (Coleoptera: Bolboceratidae), allowed us to highlight the differences within a group of closely related species spread from the Sahel region to India, supporting the traditional morphological approach and confirming the presence of a newly discovered species (P. zianii n. sp.)
A third endemic Artena from the Philippines (Lepidoptera: Erebidae)
Artena uncinata sp. n. from the Philippines (Luzon) is described. This species is a third member of the A. lacteicincta-A. eccentrica group and can readily be separated from its closest allies by the reduced secondary sexual characters of the male and differences in the male genitalia
A remarkable vicariant of Gespanna confirmata (= pectoralis) from Sulawesi (Lepidoptera: Erebidae)
Gespanna amelieae sp. n. from Sulawesi is described. This species is the second member of a hitherto monotypic genus and the first extra-Sundanan one. Despite the close resemblance to G. confirmata (= pectoralis), it can readily be separated from its congener by the different trend of the postmedial line of forewing
The spread of Bombus haematurus in Italy and its first DNA barcode reference sequence
Climate change and human activities are impacting species distribution, and thus, tracking species movements is a key aspect for their conservation and for understanding their biology. Among the bumblebees that are changing distribution, one of the most striking cases of a fast and natural range expansion is the eastern Mediterranean Bombus haematurus. Here we report the first Italian records of this species, with observations from the N-E Italy at a distance of 332 Km from the edge of the historical distribution. These are the westernmost known occurrences of this species and they are not far from a large series of records in several Central European countries of recent colonization. Here, we also obtained and made publicly available the reference COI barcode sequence of Bombus haematurus and shown that is significantly different from other similar species at this genetic marker. Coupling morphology, field-data and genetic identity should greatly improve the efficiency of tracking species movements and therefore also their knowledge in both recently colonized and historical areas

First record of the ant Formica clara in the Iberian Peninsula (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
The ant F. clara is reported from two localities in Barcelona (NE Iberian Peninsula), representing the southernmost record of the species in Southwestern Europe. Foraging workers were manually collected from both undisturbed and disturbed habitats. Its separation from the similar species F. cunicularia and F. rufibarbis in the Iberian Peninsula is discussed
