Dangerous prey: a case of cannibalism between workers of Polistes jokahamae (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Polistinae)

Workers of paper wasps (Polistinae) typically hunt insects, such as caterpillars, to provision their larvae and rarely attack conspecific workers when foraging. In an urban park in central Japan, a worker of Polistes jokahamae Radoszkowski, 1887 was observed disarticulating the body of a conspecific worker. This observation represents a rare case of cannibalism between workers in paper wasps

A new species of the genus Leptorchestes Thorell, 1870 from the Pantalica Natural Reserve (Sicily, Italy) (Araneae: Salticidae)

    No full text
A new species of ant-mimicking jumping spider, Leptorchestes elisae sp. nov., is described from the Pantalica Natural Reserve in Sicily, Italy. This species belongs to the genus Leptorchestes Thorell, 1870 (Araneae, Salticidae), a group characterized by morphological adaptations for myrmecomorphy. The new species is diagnosed based on both male and female genital morphology, with the male exhibiting different characters including a short, straight embolus and a small, non-serrated tibial apophysis, while the female displays an M-shaped posterior epigynial notch and laterally positioned copulatory openings. These traits distinguish L. elisae sp. nov. from its related species, particularly L. peresi, L. mutilloides, and L. berolinensis. The discovery of both sexes at the same locality allows for confident species attribution, a critical factor in a genus where identifications based on females can lead to taxonomic ambiguities. A revised identification key for the genus Leptorchestes is provided, along with distributional data. The new species is likely endemic to Sicily but may be more widely distributed in the Mediterranean region. This discovery contributes to a better understanding of the genus and underlines the importance of regional faunistic surveys in revealing hidden biodiversity

Enhancing risk parity models: a two-stage approach using mean-variance and expected shortfall for optimal asset selection

    No full text
In a progressively complex and volatile financial scenery, the need for robust investment strategies has never been greater. Portfolio optimization seeks to balance risk and return for superior performance. Traditional approaches, such as the Mean-Variance model by Markowitz [1952], laid the groundwork for diversification and risk management. Risk Parity models offer a compelling alternative by equalizing risk contributions across assets, but often lack an optimal mechanism for asset selection, leading to suboptimal results, especially with large and diverse asset universes. This paper proposes a novel two-stage approach. First, we use the Mean-Variance model andExpected Shortfall (ES) to select a refined subset of assets, minimizing risk without imposing return constraints. Second, we apply Risk Parity techniques—standard deviation for the Mean-Variance subset, ES for the ES-selected subset—to balance risk contributions. Tested on both Nikkei 225 equities and a mixed portfolio of stocks, bonds, and cryptocurrencies, our method enhances resilience while preserving returns

Tra quartieri e “dintorni”: un percorso nella Storia urbana e territoriale

    No full text
This article aims to outline the main aspects of the author’s scholarly work in the field of Urban History. It reviews the principal lines of research that have defined her work, the methodological tools and sources she has engaged with, her most recent publications, and future research directions. In particular, starting from a reflection on the case of Rome, the guiding thread is the relationship between center and periphery, explored through two main lenses: on the one hand, the analysis of the relationship during the modern age between major Western cities and their surrounding regions; on the other, the gradual development of twentieth-century cities into a mosaic of “neighborhoods”, where the spaces and identities of civil society intertwine and find expression in the ongoing interplay between the “high” and the “low”

La stagione delle giunte rosse nell’Italia degli anni ’70 e ’80, tra difficoltà del riformismo urbano ed esordi dell’urbanistica contrattata

    No full text
In the mid-1970s, left-wing councils were formed in almost all major Italian cities, based on an alliance between the PCI and PSI. This article focuses on the urban planning choices made during that period in four major cities – Turin, Milan, Rome, and Naples – with the aim of comparing how the dynamics of change in the 1970s and 1980s influenced municipal policies. In the first five years, the logic of intervention, although adapted to different local contexts, tended to converge both in its approach, which was strongly publicistic, and in its aims, essentially seeking to compensate for social and territorial imbalances. The situation changed in the 1980s: the dirigiste approach to urban planning persisted in Rome and Naples, faced a crisis in Turin, and was abandoned in Milan. This transition, marked by a resurgence of market primacy, proved fatal for the culture of urban reformism: once those local government experiences had ended, reconciling redistributive objectives and development promotion policies would prove increasingly complicated

Evaluation of regional landslide disaster susceptibility based on geodetector - analytic hierarchy process

    No full text
Effective evaluation of regional landslide geologic disaster susceptibility can improve the timeliness and accuracy of monitoring and early warning. However, existing studies have problems such as indicator selection without consideringregional variability and strong subjectivity in evaluation. In this paper, a new evaluation method of landslide disaster susceptibility is proposed by combining geodetector and hierarchical analysis method; taking the eastern part of Qinling Mountain System in Henan Province as the study area, spatial analysis, reclassification, autocorrelation analysis and statistical methods are used for quantitative analysis and evaluation. The results show that: road density and water system density are the main influencing factors, with q-values of 0.361 and 0.242, respectively; the mean value of Landslide Susceptibility Index (LSI) in the study area is 0.402, which belongs to the moderate susceptibility class as a whole, with the high-value zones mainly located in the valley and rivers and along the roads, the LSI values show significant positive spatial correlation. Therefore, this method can more accurately quantitatively evaluate the regional landslide disaster susceptibility

An advanced knowledge base platform and a decision support system for safeguarding cultural heritage

The TRIQUETRA KBP, a core component of the TRIQUETRA DSS, comprises two key elements: a comprehensive database housing all outputs from the project’s literature review and a WebGIS platform integrating data from pilot CH sites such as Aegina, Choirokoitia, Epidaurus, Kalapodi, Les Argilliez, Roseninsel, Smuszewo, and Ventotene. As a dynamic electronic repository, the KBP offers extensive data and advanced search tools for efficient information retrieval. The TRIQUETRA project aims to develop a robust, evidence-based DSS to mitigate the impacts of climate change on CH monuments. The DSS toolbox includes the Risk Severity Quantification module and the Mitigation Measure Selection and Optimisation module. The latter provides tailored mitigation measures for each pilot site, offering tangible recommendations for risk mitigation through a multicriteria search feature that allows filtering based on cost, timeframe, and topological effects (Ioannidis et alii, 2024). Designed for adaptability and scalability, the module leverages the KBP database to propose solutions by assessing site compatibility with others facing similar hazards. Supporting advanced research, it facilitates informed decision-making, enhanced monitoring, and tailored preservation strategies, contributing to the long-term protection of CH sites

A new locality in northern Algeria for the endangered Maghrebian endemic butterfly Pseudophilotes fatma (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae)

Pseudophilotes fatma is an endemic butterfly species found in northern Algeria and Morocco, listed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. Previously, it was known only from a few localities of Algeria in the western part of the country and northern Morocco. In 2019 it has been recorded for the first time in Ghilassa Forest in the Bordj Bou Arréridj region of northern Algeria, about 100 km west of known Algerian distribution. This study also shortly discusses the current distribution of the species and sits endangerment.

    «Lo spazio del desiderio». Michel de Certeau e l’impossibile topografia dell’interiorità mistica

The paper aims to make an overview of Michel de Certeau’s vision of modern mysticism. Particular attention will be given to  selected passages of La fable mystique, de Certeau’s masterpiece published in 1982, where the author ponders upon the topography of the soul in Teresa of Avila’s Castillo interior. As an exemplum of 16th and 17th century mystical writings, the Teresian soul comes to represent a paradoxical “space of desire” structured as a labyrinth with uncertain boundaries: its empty centre is inhabited by an impossible otherness, which is simultaneously the subject and object of mystical desire. A quick analysis of some Certeau’s excerpts will make it possible to show the relationship between the spatial metaphor and mystical desire of a distant Lover, present as an echo, as an ephemeral image of a disappearance. In fact, the mystical enunciations give voice to a body of writing in which, as in an impossible cartography, everything is margin, periphery, and where space is offered as an infinite opening, as an unhealable wound in the order of discourse. The impossibility to determine an “inside” and an “outside” turns the mystical interiority into an estimité which is able to re-invent the spatial notions of “center” and “periphery”
