The "Generation of 1920": Revolutionary Rendezvous in Moscow
High winter survival rate of acorn ants inside artificial nest sites (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
Although most species of ants overwinter underground to avoid low temperatures, the acorn ants of the genus Temnothorax remain in nests situated at ground level. During a field experiment, I studied the winter mortality of acorn ants in nest sites situated aboveground, as well as in sites experimentally buried in the soil. Despite the low air temperatures (even reaching –19°C, recorded 1.5 m above the ground), the survivorship was very high: all of the 18 queens used in the experiment survived, while the survival rate of workers was 61.9-100%, and for most colonies it exceeded 95%. The rate of survival in the nest sites aboveground and those experimentally buried in the soil was similar. Such a high survival rate in the nests situated at ground level could have resulted from the presence of snow cover during the strongest frost. The artificial nest sites used in the study provided safety for the ants; however, the real mortality during winter, e.g. connected also with predation or destruction of the nest sites, is a subject that needs further study
Update on aspects of ethoecology for the exceedingly restricted and most outstanding Italian endemic moth, Brahmaea (Acanthobrahmaea) europaea Hartig (Lepidoptera: Brahmaeidae)
Brahmaea (Acanthobrahmaea) europaea Hartig, 1963, is an Italian endemic species exhibiting a very restricted geographic distribution (Basilicata and Campania regions, Grotticelle di Monticchio Nature Reserve and neighbouring areas), and with a few Oleaceae (Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa, Ligustrum vulgare and Phyllirea latifolia) as host plants. Before 1997 only adult moths were collected with artificial light. After 1997, egg clusters and larvae were located, inside and outside the Reserve, so allowing to investigate the specific habitat preference, conservation status and survival of B. europaea in order to draw up strategies for the conservation of this species. The comparison of the egg clusters found 2014-2017, has revealed interesting common characteristics even if the preliminary conditions need to be confirmed by further studies. During the spring of the 2021, the discovery of another egg cluster allowed amplified and further defined what emerged from the researches at date on some aspects of ethology and ecology of the moth
First record of Mordellistena algeriensis Ermisch, 1966 in Italy (Coleoptera: Mordellidae)
Mordellistena algeriensis Ermisch, 1966, so far known from Algeria and Tunisia, is now being reported from Italy for the first time, based on the two specimens collected recently in Sardinia. Details of the new record, differential diagnosis of the species, figures of the diagnostic characters, and habitus images are provided
New records of acalyptrate Diptera from Sicily (Brachycera, Muscomorpha: Asteiidae, Aulacigastridae, Carnidae, Lonchaeidae, Odiniidae, Pallopteridae, Periscelididae, Piophilidae, Sciomyzidae, Ulidiidae)
Four families with five species of acalyptrate Diptera are recorded for the first time from Sicily: Aulacigastridae [Aulacigaster falcata Papp, A. leucopeza (Meigen)], Odiniidae [Odinia trinotata Robineau-Desvoidy], Periscelididae [Periscelis annulata (Fallén)] and Carnidae [Meoneura freta Collin]. In six families that were previously known from Sicily, an additional nine new species records are given. The lists of species of Meoneura Rondani of Italy and of Herina Robineau-Desvoidy (Ulidiidae) of Sicily are updated
New records of Tarucus balkanicus at the northern limit of its distribution along the Adriatic coast (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea, Lycaenidae)
Occurrences of the Little Tiger Blue, Tarucus balkanicus (Freyer, 1844) in Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina represent the northern and western distribution limits of this species in its entire range. During our surveys the species was observed at 27 locations in Croatia and two new locations in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The most interesting records are from the three northern Adriatic islands: Cres, Rab and Pag, which represent a significant northward extension in the known range of the species in Croatia. While the records from Bosnia & Herzegovina fall into their known range, they represent the only observations of the species in more than 30 years. We redefined the distribution limits of its range in the Balkan Peninsula, including four Adriatic islands. Its habitat in the region is not under direct threat, at least in the short-term. Moreover, its hostplant P. spina-christi Mill., thrives in abandoned pastures and grasslands in Mediterranean and submediterranean regions in both countries and is one of the more successful colonizers of such abandoned areas. Thus, the species is not considered threatened at least in Croatia and could benefit from ongoing abandonment of the pastures and grasslands as well as climate change
Sustainability toward recovery. Understanding the natural capital narrative
The setting of the Ecological Economy has initiated new reflections on the issues of local development and has underlined the aspects of governance and relations promoted by local actors. The contribution, starting from the mitigation actions initiated in some glacial bodies of the Adamello-Presanella mountain range, reflects on the links between sustainability and recovery as they emerge from the discussions on ecosystem services and their enhancement. The reference framework for the theme of ecological transition and integration between economy and ecology is reconstructed by retracing the dynamics of global governance on the issues of sustainability and, in particular, biodiversity. The dynamics and concretization of all these aspects investigated at the local scale allows a reflection on the creation / appropriation of the value of natural capital and on local thinking about the meaning of sustainability
Stochastic analysis of a currency issue
This study analyses a potential investment by a possible pension investor in government bonds issued in foreign currency under a risk-return perspective. In particular, the government bond under study is the thirty-year Italy Govt ISIN US465410CC03, denominated in US dollars. By means of stochastic processes, the trend in the exchange rate between the two currencies, the dollar, and the euro, is simulated to assess its impact on the yield to maturity of the government bond considered. The analysis involves determining the probabilities of obtaining a negative yield in the different simulation scenarios. In addition, there are also determined the probabilities of obtaining returns to maturity lower than those obtainable with a similar investment instrument denominated in euro
