Natural disasters and major risks in Algeria: management and prevention mechanisms
Natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods cause loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, housing, and facilities, leading to material, moral, and psychological damage that can last for many years. The fear of natural disasters has grown in many countries around the world, as these disasters have become a threat to life no less dangerous than the damage caused by wars, conflicts, and deadly diseases. This has led us to challenge all circumstances in order to find ways to manage natural disasters, crises, and major risks. Algeria is one of the countries that has been hit by many natural disasters, the most prominent of which are earthquakes. It has relied on temporary and immediate solutions to deal with the aftermath of earthquakes without relying on disaster management mechanisms before and after their occurrence. Algeria, like other countries exposed to these natural hazards, has tried to work to reduce their impact by adopting a legal and strategic system that intervenes during and after disasters. This is done by taking a set of decisions aimed at preventing major hazards and managing them. The Boumerdès earthquake was one of the most important natural disasters that effectively contributed to the revision of the legal and regulatory framework for major risks in Algeria. The huge losses caused by this earthquake necessitated a complete review by the Algerian legislator to develop a preventive strategy before, during, and after the disaster in order to achieve sustainable environmental and economic development
Translating employment contracts: insights from corpus linguistics
This work shows how corpus-based studies can be applied to the field of specialised translation and, more precisely, to the legal translation of employment contracts. Legal language, given its complexity and cultural specificity, presents considerable challenges for translators, and reliance on bilingual dictionaries may not always result in high-quality translations. Corpus methodology applied to translation analysis can offer significant contributions both in terms of advanced linguistic analysis and as a didactic tool for the learning of specialised languages. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to create an ad hoc monolingual corpus of employment contracts to show how corpus analysis is beneficial to legal translation. This paper conducts a corpus-based translation analysis of an employment contract translated from Italian into English. The findings highlight how the use of the corpus helps translate the employment contract in a much more efficient and suitable way, especially in terms of spotting formulaic expressions, finding the correct collocations, and choosing the best translation candidate(s)
Bridging theoretical advancements and empirical practices in environmental justice research: towards a mixed-methods approach
This critical review explores the evolution of environmental justice research, highlighting the transition from a primary focus on the distribution of environmental “goods” and “bads” to a multidimensional approach that includes recognition, participation, and socio-historical analysis. The review evaluates empirical studies, categorizing them into quantitative and qualitative methods, and assesses their strengths and limitations. While quantitative research has been instrumental in mapping spatial inequalities, it often fails to capture the socio-historical and structural processes that shape environmental injustices. On the other hand, while qualitative methods have added depth by capturing lived experiences and complex socio-political dynamics, they often lack the ability to address spatial patterns systematically. The separation of these approaches has limited the field’s ability to fully understand environmental justice. To bridge these gaps, the contribution proposes a framework for a new generation of environmental justice (EJ) scholars, advocating for mixed-methods research and the adoption of a critical geographical perspective. This integrated approach aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of environmental justice, encompassing distribution, recognition, participation, and other possible dimensions, thereby enhancing both academic insight and practical policy impact
Mobility and innovation: a critical review
The increasing attention given to inventors’ mobility and its relationship with regional innovative activity has garnered significant interest among scholars. This review critically examines the key findings in this area, identifying both strengths and limitations in existing research. The discussion is organized into three primary areas: first, the mechanisms by which mobility influences innovation; second, the effects of mobility on the regions involved; and third, the factors that drive inventors’ mobility. The review concludes that while recent studies have made notable contributions to understanding these dynamics, there remains a need for new analytical frameworks. These would be instrumental not only in reconciling divergent perspectives but also in shaping future research directions
Globalizzazione, costruzione europea e moneta unica: La sinistra italiana nello scenario dell’Atto Unico Europeo (1984-87)
signing of the European Single Act, caught the Italian left in the midst of a politicaland cultural transformation that was as ambitious as it was full of unknowns.Communists and Socialists became aware, around the mid-1980s, of the importanceof Europe as an external constraint of national government and, at the sametime, as a tool for moderating the impact of globalization on nation-states. Theantagonism between the PCI and the PSI on the national level did not preventthe ripening of a long-distance discussion on some of the main issues concerningthe reform of the European community. In these years, monetary policy, in particular, was the catalyst for the reflections of economists, technicians and partyintellectuals from these two political areas, who debated about the prospect ofa “phase two” of the European Monetary System as a premise for bolder developmentstoward the political and economic unity of the Europeans. The articlereconstructs this debate, highlighting both its potential and limits, against thebackdrop of the closing phase of the Cold War and the transformations takingplace in the international economy
Bettino Craxi e la Comunità europea negli anni Ottanta
The article examines Bettino Craxi’s stance towards European integration. Afterbecoming secretary of the Italian Socialist Party in 1976, Craxi advocated fora “social Europe”, where the European Community would address unemploymentand promote the equal distribution of wealth. However, while serving asItaly’s Prime Minister (1983-1987), Craxi set these goals aside. His engagementwith the Community’s affairs was largely influenced by circumstances such asthe British rebate, the defence of Italian agricultural interests within the CAP,and the Single European Act. It was only after his time at Palazzo Chigi thathe returned to the subject of the social dimension of the EEC. This led himto express many reservations about the “neo-liberal” character of the internalmarket and the European Union created by the Maastricht Treaty
Dalla “via americana” al “progetto gandhiano”: l’Europa dei Radicali (1979-89)
From the late 1970s, the Radical Party’s anti-statism, anti-nationalism, and anti-militarism evolved into a broader reflection on European integration. Althoughaimed at preventing the European continent from becoming a peripheral areaat the mercy of the clash between the USA and the USSR, the Radicals’ vision ofEurope took shape primarily as a space and instrument for defending and spreadingdemocracy and the rule of law. For this reason, the Radicals believed thatEurope should interact also with actors beyond its geographical borders. Startingin 1982, the leader Marco Pannella, a member of the European Parliament, and subsequently the entire party, committed themselves to supporting AltieroSpinelli’s initiative to have a “draft treaty for the European Union” approvedby the European Parliament. In the second half of the 1980s, this unwaveringcommitment to a federalist evolution of European institutions not only impliedsupport for the United States of Europe project, but also influenced the Radicals’pursuit of a transnational organizational and strategic dimension
I Verdi italiani e il processo di integrazione europea fino alla prima metà degli anni Novanta
The article analyses the emergence of visions, proposals and projects for Europeanintegration within the Federation of Green Lists, focusing on the periodbetween the birth of the Green Lists in the mid-1980s and the first experienceof participation of Italian Green MEPs in the European Parliament, in thenewly created Green Group. From the Europe of Regions to the developmentof a Eurofederalist proposal, thanks above all to the action of Adelaide Agliettaand Alexander Langer in the European Parliament, the contribution intendsto present the main features of a pan-European green federalism, aimed at thedemocratisation of the European Union, in a context marked by the end of theCold War and deep transformations in international relations between hopesfor peace and new scenarios of war
First record of ergatandromorphous Temnothorax turcicus (Santschi, 1934) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Slovakia
Various morphological malformations have always attracted the attention of naturalists. One of the iconic ones is gynandromorphy, in which an individual shows both male and female traits. Although this phenomenon is considered common across the insect kingdom, the level of scientific knowledge is still poor in ants – one of the most studied groups of arthropods. In this study, we present the discovery of a worker ant [of the rare thermophilic species Temnothorax turcicus (Santschi, 1934)] from the territory of Slovakia, part of whose head bears the characteristics of a male. Observations of a live individual affected in this way were also made. Additionally, the location where this specimen was found is currently the northernmost known distribution point of this species in Europe
Assessment of Odonate assemblages in the Agro Pontino (Latina, Central Italy) using two biotic indices (Insecta: Odonata)
Odonate assemblages were surveyed in seven sites within the context of the EU LIFE project GREENCHANGE that aims to preserve biodiversity and to enhance the ecological value of the agro-ecosystems of Agro Pontino (Latina, Central Italy) through interventions of ecological restoration. In total 16 species were recorded during the ante-operam surveys in 2019, which represent 28% of the Odonate fauna of the Lazio Region. None of them has a significant conservation interest, however Coenagrion castellani, an endemic Italian species, was observed in a small rivulet near the Pantanello site during an additional fi eld survey. The application of OHI (Odonate Habitat Index) and ORI (Odonate River Index) allowed a detailed characterization of the dragonfl y assemblages that are mainly dominated by eurytopic and euryecious species typical of standing waters. The assemblages of Pantanello and Fosso Epitaffio are notable exceptions thanks to the presence of sensitive lentic and lotic species. The main pressures affecting Odonate assemblages identified in the study area are the alterations of aquatic and riparian vegetation, the hydromorphological degradation of running waters, limited water quality and the presence of the invasive crayfi sh Procambarus clarkii
