    What is in a bag? Doing and becoming subjectivity

    This article explores the ways in which material objects relate to selfhood, by focusing on school bags - a personal item that is close to bodies, expressive but also used. We review scholar work on self with a specific focus that conceptualises self in relation to material objects. This review portrays the self as a unique, dynamic, experiencing subjectivity in terms of either self-awareness or as an agent of social order. Building on this framework we propose a new understanding of self as a doing and therefore becoming subjectivity in order to understand self-order - self towards itself and other selves. We build our argumentation through a field study consisting of exploration of online social media platforms, observation of students' daily routines, and interviews with 23 high school students. We show that material objects like bags are companions of selfhood; necessary for the accomplishment of daily lives, so arguably enabling the self to live the life it desires, where this companionship extends to constructing self, establishing and maintaining life goals and relationships to other selves, thereby accomplishment of selfhood. It turns out, as we carry bags, bags carry out our very selves

    Disruption of Lipomyces starkeyi cells grown in hydrolyzed cheese-whey by high pressure homogenization for enhancing lipid extraction

    Lipids of microbial sources can be used for various purposes, such as enrichment of edible oils. In this study, L. starkeyi was grown in enzymatically hydrolyzed cheese whey medium and disrupted by the high-pressure homogenization (HPH) method. A maximal lipid yield of 42.1 ± 0.52% was obtained at 150 MPa and 7 passes. According to the analysis of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), L. starkeyi lipid was found to be rich in palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids. Also, L. starkeyi lipid proved to be a valuable source of omega-3 (0.26-0.89%) and omega-7 (3.65-3.92%) fatty acids. Thus, HPH method is shown to be a promising method for lipid extraction from Lipomyces starkeyi biomass grown in hydrolyzed cheese whey medium

    Teacher-child interaction quality in early childhood education: the impact of teacher beliefs

    This study examines the status of teacher-child interaction quality, the nature of teacher beliefs, and their relationship in the context of preschool classrooms in a metropolitan city in Turkey via a mixed-methods research design. Quantitative data were collected from 47 preschool teachers through teacher survey and structured classroom observation methods using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS). In the qualitative dimension, semi-structured interviews were conducted with four preschool teachers, purposefully selected based on their CLASS scores. The results revealed that the overall quality of teacher-child interaction was ‘average’ in the classrooms. Preschool teachers were generally positive about their capabilities to teach and tended to espouse developmentally appropriate practice to a great extent, but these beliefs did not consistently align with the teacher-child interaction quality observed in their classrooms. The study highlights the critical need to bridge the gap between teachers’ beliefs and practices to improve the quality of early childhood education

    Seismic Performance of RC Structures in Pazarcık and Elbistan During the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes

    On Monday, February 6th, 2023, at 04:17 and 13:24 local time, two very severe shallow earthquakes with magnitudes Mw = 7.7 and 7.6 occurred, with epicenters in Kahramanmaraş-Pazarcık and Kahramanmaraş-Elbistan. Due to the strong ground motion effect during these earthquakes, many people lost their lives and great economic losses occurred due to the destruction and damage to buildings in eleven different provinces and surrounding regions. In this study, the seismic performances of structures with various structural systems located in the Pazarcık and Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaraş city, which are the epicenters of these earthquakes, were evaluated as a result of field observations. Structural failures in the earthquake epicenters’ urban and rural building stocks directly affected the damage's extent. Structural damages occurring in both district centers and rural areas of the districts were investigated within the scope of earthquake and civil engineering. The main causes of damaged concrete structures are irregularities and insufficient reinforced concrete. The significance of earthquake-resistant structure design principles and irregularity-free structures has again become clear

    Perceived instrumentality of early childhood education: parents’ valued future goals for their children

    Adopting an integrative grounded theory approach, this study aimed to uncover parents’ perceptions of instrumentality regarding early childhood education within the scope of their children’s academic skills, social-emotional development, and occupational aspirations. A total of 32 parents, each with at least one child enrolled in a preschool for no less than one year, were recruited from a large city in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey through snowball sampling. The data were collected through online semi-structured interviews and analysed using a three-step systematic framework of analysis. The results revealed that parents’ perceptions of instrumentality regarding early childhood education included diverse and meaningful categories related to their children’s academic skills, social-emotional development, and occupational aspirations. Notably, the results also demonstrated that, in comparison to academic skills and occupational aspirations, parents perceived early childhood education as more instrumental in enhancing their children’s social-emotional development. Consequently, the results of the present study enabled the emergence of a new adaptive theory of perceived instrumentality in early childhood education

    Comparison and evolution of Ti6Al4V bioalloy fabricated by laser and electron beam additive manufacturing: Mechanical features and anisotropic electrochemical properties

    With current technology, most biomedical implants are made using metal-based alloys, with a growing preference for metal additive manufacturing (AM) to achieve customized properties. Therefore, this study investigated Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) alloys produced using two common AM techniques: electron beam melting (EBM) and selective laser melting (SLM). The aim is to compare the microstructure, mechanical properties, and anisotropy electrochemical corrosion behavior of Ti64 samples scanned with SLM-XX, SLM-XY, and EBM-XX strategies. Surface roughness, microstructure, and microhardness tests were conducted to establish correlations with the manufacturing process and surface characteristics. Optical and scanning electron microscopy microstructural analysis revealed notable variations influencing mechanical performance. Moreover, anisotropy-assessing electrochemical corrosion evaluations showed that SLM samples exhibited superior corrosion resistance compared to EBM samples. Notably, the (YZ) planes in the SLM-XY sample demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance (Rct ⁓ 4.45 ×106 Ω.cm2), attributed to reduced dislocation density and enhanced passivation. Furthermore, results showed that the method of fabrication affected the wettability of Ti64 alloys. The SLM-XY samples exhibited the lowest water contact angle (84.45°), whereas the EBM samples showed the highest (99.87°). Finally, bioactivity assessments after 21 days in simulated body fluid (SBF) revealed no cracking or surface damage in any of the tested samples. The formation of calcium- and phosphorus-rich deposits indicates their potential suitability for orthopedic applications

    An initial velocity model based on VS30 for the region affected by the February 6, 2023 Turkiye earthquakes

    This paper presents a VS30-dependent one-dimensional (1D) velocity model for the region affected by the February 6, 2023, earthquakes in Turkiye, which were marked by complex fault interactions along the East Anatolian Fault Zone. The proposed model utilizes VS measurements from 118 strong ground motion stations to develop a shallow VS structure (≤ 0.1 km), integrates deeper VS data from Acarel et al. (2019), and establishes a VS transition zone for intermediate depths (0.1 km to 0.6 km). The model evaluation indicated minimal bias despite some discrepancies. Additionally, compressional wave velocities (VP) and densities (ρ) corresponding to the VS30-conditioned VS model are provided. The findings from this study can be applied in a range of disciplines, including geotechnical and structural engineering, as well as ground motion simulations

    Electrochromic, Capacitive, and Electrocatalytic Performance of TEMPO Anchored EDOT-SN(T)S-EDOT Electrode

    Conjugated polymers bearing TEMPO units are successfully used as catalysts for the selective oxidation of primary alcohols. Moreover, such polymers should exhibit satisfactory capacitive properties for energy storage applications. Herein, a TEMPO-substituted EDOT-SNS-EDOT conjugated unit was electropolymerized, and the resulting polymer film was investigated for its electrochromic, capacitive, and electrocatalytic properties. The donor structure of the monomer facilitated efficient polymerization. The polymer film displayed brownish-pink and blue-gray colors in its neutral and oxidized states, respectively, while its semioxidized states showed brownish and khaki hues. The optical contrast was determined to be 28% at 505 nm, with oxidation and reduction times of 1.20 and 1.38 s, respectively. The areal-specific capacitance of the polymer electrode was calculated as 3.81 mF/cm2 (0.1 mA/cm2), ranking it at a high-mid level compared to other electrodeposited conjugated polymers reported in the literature. The electrocatalytic activity of the polymer film was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) in the presence of benzyl alcohol. The TEMPO units effectively catalyzed the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde in the presence of 2,6-lutidine. Notably, the same polymer film was reused for three successive experiments without any loss of electrocatalytic activity. These findings demonstrate that the developed polymer film exhibits promising electrochromic, capacitive, and electrocatalytic properties

    Internalised homonegativity and depressive symptoms: a meta-analysis

    In our meta-analytic study, we aimed to specifically focus on the relationship between IH and depressive symptoms among LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) individuals across studies conducted internationally. The meta-analysis included studies conducted between 2000 and 2022, encompassing data from 13 countries. Studies retrieved from the literature search were screened based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in the inclusion of 95 effect sizes. The results revealed a positive, small-to-medium effect size between IH and depressive symptoms (r = 0.2979, p <.001), with significant heterogeneity among the effect sizes (Q(95) = 638.4979, p <.001). We tested the following moderators: country-level LGBTQ+ acceptance scores, age, and year of data collection. However, the results did not support the moderating effects of these variables. This study contributes to the existing literature by confirming that the strength of the relationship between IH and depressive symptoms remains significant. Further research may explore this relationship in diverse cultural contexts, considering cohort effects and other theoretical factors (e.g. individual resilience, social support, community involvement) that may influence this association
