Capitalizing on Gen Z students’ interests and motivations to develop Global Citizenship Education in VEs
No full textThe article reports on the outcomes yielded by two different virtual exchanges conducted before and after the forced closures of academic institutions due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. They were designed considering interests and motivations of Gen Z students (Seemiller & Grace, 2016) and aimed at including a Global Citizenship Education approach to deal with contemporary world challenges. The current article details these telecollaborations between two cohorts of a large private research university in Eastern North America and two large research state universities in the Southern part of North America and Western South America that were brought together to deepen their understanding on the migration phenomenon by performing collaborative tasks. Throughout these exchanges and at the conclusion of the courses, students reported common and divergent perspectives on issues discussed. Although there were more points of coincidence in their understanding of the phenomenon, when learners did not agree, they sought to see the other’s perspectives and strived to find common ground. Overall, the evaluation of these virtual exchanges was considered a beneficial and rewarding experience that not only made their learning easier but gave access to more global perspectives about the migration phenomenon. No full textEn el presente trabajo analizo un corpus de obras de la realizadora argentina Albertina Carri. Propongo poner en diálogo su último largometraje documental Cuatreros (2016) junto a la pieza Punto Impropio (2020) y Restos (2010) con la lectura performática titulada El affaire Velázquez (2013) y la instalación Investigación del cuatrerismo (2015). Estas realizaciones están construidas a partir de documentos tomados de distintos acervos. Pueden entenderse como un diálogo en ausencia que la directora intenta con su padremadre desaparecidos por la última dictadura cívico-militar. Estas propuestas, además, son un intento de repensar la herencia o legado de sus progenitores partiendo desde los despojos. Allí asoma una forma de montaje desviado sobre los archivos construyendo otro tipo de narrativas intermediales que proponen repensar los vínculos íntimos y familiares.
This paper analyses a corpus of works by Argentine filmmaker Albertina Carri. I propose to put into dialogue her latest documentary Cuatreros (2016) together with the piece Punto Impropio (2020) and Restos (2010) using the performative lecture El affaire Velázquez (2013) and the installation Investigación del cuatrerismo (2015). These works are constructed from documents taken from different collections. They can be understood as a dialogue in absence that the director attempts with her parents, who were disappeared during the last civil-military dictatorship in Argentina. These proposals are also attempts to rethink the inheritance or legacy of her parents based on the remains. Somehow, there emerges a form of deflected montage on the archives, constructing another type of intermedial narrative that proposes to rethink intimate and family ties

War Triptych
No full textThis three-part collection of personal memories was inspired by Otto Dix\u27s triptych ‘The War’ (1929-1932). The horrors of war and presence of death Dix exposed in his painting form the implicit point of reference for three short stories of reconciliation in and after the Second World War. The three auto/biographical memories by and ‘as told to’ the author celebrate forgiveness and humaneness among ordinary people in and after times of war as the one way to survive and continue life after the pain and losses caused by war, which are not part of the stories. The condensed form of the triptych recalls Dix\u27s painting as well as the sacredness of suffering and reconciliation as symbolized by conventional Crucifixion triptychs
Introduction: Life Writing through Refugee Tales
No full textThis cluster took off from an interdisciplinary and international workshop hosted at the University of Vienna in May 2022. Some of the original contributors turned their presentations into articles for this cluster; other articles were recruited later on. The original idea for both the workshop and cluster was inspired by the UK’s Refugee Tales project, founded and organized by David Herd and Anna Pincus. Some of the articles collected here discuss the life writing aspect of this project from different angles and positions: Patience Agbabi as contributing author to the first Refugee Tales volume, Sandra Mayer as a scholar of literary celebrity, and Sylvia Mieszkowski as cultural analyst. Other articles take a look at other projects in which displaced persons work on life narratives alongside citizens of the host countries: Jessica Gustafsson writes about the Swedish Flyktpodden podcast and Helga Ramsey-Kurz about the Austrian ARENA initiative. Two articles provide the collection with an opening frame, as they focus on the paradoxes that are perpetually produced by immigration law and the cultural conceptions of ‘the refugee’ in the European context (Judith Kohlenberger) and in Austria, specifically for minors (Ayşe Dursun and Birgit Sauer). An Afterword by one of the founders and organizers of Refugee Tales (David Herd) closes the cluster, offering an assessment of the project’s role in the context of the UK’s political situation in the summer of 2023, just after both Houses of Parliament passed the Illegal Migration Bill, which the UN has publicly denounced as contrary to international law

No full textThe prior issue of Krisis (42:1) published Critical Naturalism: A Manifesto, with the aim to instigate a debate of the issues raised in this manifesto – the necessary re-thinking of the role (and the concept) of nature in critical theory in relation to questions of ecology, health, and inequality. Since Krisis considers itself a place for philosophical debates that take contemporary struggles as starting point, it issued an open call and solicited responses to the manifesto.
