No full textPlaying on the double meaning of the word projection, this book explores the multiple relationships between the French literary genre of autofiction and the moving image. Élise Hugueny-Léger, a researcher of contemporary French literature and a specialist of the work of Annie Ernaux, departs from the idea that autofictional writing is a form of psychological projection, wherein a self-image is being cast onto the page. In a more literal sense, the word projection refers to the cinematic technique of showing moving images on a screen. Several francophone authors known for their autofiction have also been involved in audiovisual productions, but earlier criticism has largely limited itself to studying their literary output. By addressing this rich and complex subject matter, Hugueny-Léger makes a valuable and original contribution to the field of francophone life-writing studies
External Conditions, Internal Rationality: Spinoza on the Rationality of Suicide
No full textI argue alongside some other scholars that there is a plausible reading of Spinoza’s philosophy of suicide which holds both of the following tenets: first, that suicides occur because of external conditions, and second, that there are at least some suicides which are rational. These two tenets require special attention because they seem to be the source of significant tension. For Spinoza, if one’s cognitions are to be the most adequate, they must be “disposed internally” (E2p29s/G II 114), or determined more from one’s own mental nature than from “fortuitous encounters” with other things (E2p29s/G II 114). It may seem there is a conflict, then, in saying both that there are rational suicides in the Spinozist framework, and that suicides must always be a result of external conditions: it seems a suicide simply cannot be rational if it is the result of external conditions. But this tension, it will be shown, can be dissolved. Once this tension is dealt with, I offer some brief closing arguments. I explain how this reading of Spinoza’s philosophy of suicide can satisfy a call for new suicide research which avoids forms of over-individualism and epistemic injustice, and which encourages us to abolish oppressive conditions that lead to rational suicides

No full textThe aim of the article is to examine the process of self-creation depicted in two Leonora Christina Skov’s autobiographical novels (Den, der lever stille [2018], Hvis vi ikke taler om det [2021]). The theory underlying this analysis is that autobiographical acts are in their essence more performative than constative. Following the post-structuralists claims, the study assumes that an autobiographical project consists in (re)creating the author\u27s self rather than reflecting him or her as a pre-existing individual. Furthermore, self-narration will be considered here as necessary in the process of identity formation just as it is stated in Lacan’s identity theory. Such a project of (re)making oneself through self-narration is taken in Skov’s novels and its structure consists of three main phases. The first concerns processing the childhood traumas as well as fighting for independence as an individual. The second comprises delivering a specific model of oneself through the text production. The third consists of making corrections in the previously made self-portrayal (and thus placing the identity formation in a constant state of motion). Understanding narcissistic spending: The connections between narcissistic personality traits and conspicuous consumption
No full textThe present study explored potential factors that may mediate the relationship between narcissism and conspicuous consumption, as the underlying reasons for this connection remain uncertain. Specifically, we investigated the following variables as potential mediators of the links between narcissistic personality traits and conspicuous consumption: consumer need for uniqueness, materialism, approval seeking, material meaning, consumer sexual signaling, and need for social status. In a sample of 2,944 Israeli community members, our study revealed that extraverted, antagonistic, neurotic, and communal narcissism frequently exhibited positive indirect connections with conspicuous consumption through these mediating factors, with the most robust associations often being observed for antagonistic narcissism. However, a clear departure from this pattern became apparent when the anticipated mediation of the connections between narcissistic personality traits and conspicuous consumption via the need for social status did not unfold as predicted. In contrast, extraverted, antagonistic, and communal narcissism exhibited negative indirect associations with conspicuous consumption through the need for social status. Collectively, these findings indicate both commonalities and distinctions in how narcissistic personality traits are associated with conspicuous consumption via specific mediators. The discussion delves into the significance of these outcomes in shedding light on why conspicuous consumption holds allure for individuals with narcissistic tendencies
