Decentring the Author: Refugee Tales and Collaborative Life Narrative as Activism
No full textThis article focuses on collaborative life-storytelling as a tool of socio-political literary activism in the context of the Refugee Tales project. It argues that Refugee Tales is unique: on the one hand, it capitalizes on the cultural authority and ‘attention capital’ (Van Krieken) of well-known writers who offer a scathing critique of the UK asylum system; on the other hand, the project deconstructs this authority through collaboratively-authored life narrative, polyphony, and diversity. Adding value as a marketable name, public face, and articulate voice, the celebrity author nevertheless experiences a decentring, as the focus shifts towards more dialectic and inclusive negotiations of authorship. In this process, the myth of the white, male author genius is dismantled and replaced by an emphasis on the collaborative and the collective. What takes centre stage instead is the powerful process of storytelling as an act of remembrance, recording, and bearing witness, emerging as a collective endeavour through exchange, repetition, and circulation within the public sphere. This storytelling project thus has the potential to disrupt, and ultimately change, dominant discourses around migration, displacement, and asylum. Furthermore, Refugee Tales problematizes the ideology of individualism that underlies the cult of the genius author, autobiographical narrative, and celebrity construction
Combining virtual exchange with challenge-based learning: the experience of the “Virtual Environmental Challenge”
No full textThis practice report presents the use of Virtual Exchange (VE) (O’Dowd, 2018) and Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) (Gallagher & Savage, 2020) as a means to enhance an Internationalisation at Home (IaH) (Beelen & Jones, 2015) experiment. The present study focuses on the “Virtual Environmental Challenge” (VEC) which brought together 10 different universities from 7 different countries, in the context of an Erasmus+ project. Now in its third iteration, the VE is focusing on the VEC in tandem with Challenge-Based Learning. The CBL approach can be considered as Project-Based Learning (PBL) (Fleming, 2002) with the students in charge of defining their own project. Explaining the conceptual framework of CBL allowed for the transmission and communication of the complex elements of the VEC in an easy to understand format. This article reports back on the experience, feedback and learning experiences of the VEC in order to map out the future perspectives of the project. The contribution of this report is to ground CBL as a pedagogical new approach in the form of experiential learning (Kolb, 2015). This report also aims to inform practitioners about the value of VE, CBL, and IaH focused projects and the rewards these projects can bring
The Absolute Contradiction of Self-Determination
No full textThe prior issue of Krisis (42:1) published Critical Naturalism: A Manifesto, with the aim to instigate a debate of the issues raised in this manifesto – the necessary re-thinking of the role (and the concept) of nature in critical theory in relation to questions of ecology, health, and inequality. Since Krisis considers itself a place for philosophical debates that take contemporary struggles as starting point, it issued an open call and solicited responses to the manifesto. #kalasatama: Discursive Views of the Helsinki Landscape Through the Virtual Window
No full textThe article explores the relationship between the user, smartphone, and landscape as part of everyday social practices, proposing that the screen and camera of the smartphone co-constructs our understanding of the landscape. Focusing on encounters with the Helsinki landscape through the practice of making, sharing, and viewing images I examine the relationship between user—smartphone—landscape in understanding the new Helsinki landscape. I look at these landscapes in the context of the changes wrought on the Helsinki skyline by the construction of the tall towers at Kalasatama. Kalasatama is a suburb to the east of Helsinki’s city centre. It was previously an industrial area with a small port and is currently being developed as both a commercial and residential space. I argue that the perception of these landscapes can be seen as co-constructed through the practices of making, sharing, and viewing images, as they have become embedded into the everyday through a state of perpetual connectivity. Using postphenomenology and philosophy of technology I reflect upon the place of the smartphone in the phenomena of experience and the embeddedness of image-making within contemporary social practices

No full textArtemys was een feministische boekhandel in Brussel die zich als enige in België specialiseerde in lesbianisme. De boekhandel die uitgebaat werd door Marian Lens was een uiting van politiek activisme in een tijd waarin lesbiennes onzichtbaar bleven. Aan de hand van persoonlijk archiefmateriaal en mondelinge geschiedenis wil dit onderzoek de bredere betekenis van de boekhandel voor Belgische lesbiennes schetsen. Bovendien legt deze studie een breder netwerk van feministische boekhandels bloot. Het wil zichtbaarheid geven aan de aanzienlijke rol van lesbiennes binnen het feminisme en aan hun kritische blik tegenover genderstructuren

No full textBijna honderd jaar geleden vochten vrouwen voor toegang tot het notariaat. Hoewel zij wel de opleiding tot kandidaat-notaris mochten volgen, en als zodanig werken op een notariskantoor, konden zij niet benoemd worden tot notaris. Tegen deze discriminatie verzette een groepje vrouwelijke kandidaat-notarissen zich met een bezoek aan de minister van Justitie en een rekest aan de Tweede en Eerste Kamer. De christelijke partijen hielden openstelling van het notariaat voor vrouwen echter (opnieuw) tegen. Pas na de Tweede Wereldoorlog was het tij gekeerd en werd de eerste vrouwelijke notaris in Nederland benoemd
