No full textVirtual exchanges through the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP) allow instructors to design collaborations that engage students in global, international, and intercultural (GII) competencies, which are increasingly emphasised through the ongoing process of internationalisation of higher education. This article constitutes a practice report that describes two TAPP virtual exchanges designed by an instructor in Spain and one in the United States between master’s level translation students at a research university in Spain and 1) undergraduate students enrolled in a specialised technical writing course at a research university in the U.S. and 2) students in a graduate editing course at a regional university in the U.S. A content analysis of pre- and postlearning reports authored by the translation students demonstrates that students engaged in GII competencies such as openness, adaptability, and intercultural communication, which further reinforced the internationalisation of the curriculum
Intergenerational service-learning through virtual exchange across a foreign language program
No full textThis paper reports on the implementation of intergenerational service-learning (SL) through virtual exchange (VE) across a German as a foreign language program at a private research institution on the East Coast in the U.S. The S-L integration started during the pandemic in intermediate courses as an outreach effort to Germanspeaking older adults in Germany and in the U.S. and has become a cornerstone of the German Program. Participants include intermediate and advanced German learners, two non-profit volunteer organizations in Germany that focus on improving the living conditions of older adults in society, one local U.S. community partner, and German heritage speakers in the U.S. Since Spring 2021, students have engaged with older adults in different formats (tandem, whole-group, a mix of both) via technology tools (landlines, Zoom, WhatsApp, Facetime). The Program is rooted in three experiential pedagogical approaches and frameworks, namely VE, S-L, and Intercultural Citizenship Education, which are driven by principles of reciprocity and reflection. The overall programmatic objective is to contribute to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) goals (community engagement, partnership formation) set forth in the institution’s strategic plan. Course learning outcomes include fostering intergenerational, intercultural, and language learning and raising students’ awareness towards challenges older adults may face. On the level of language program development, the Program provides opportunities for instructor-instructor collaborations, instructor-student collaborations, and communityengaged research

No full textThe patristic notion of deification has become popular because of a retrieval of Eastern theological motifs, dissatisfaction with Western modernity, and the attractiveness of spiritualities of transformation. Some Reformed theologians embrace the idea of deification, others decidedly reject it because of the distinction between Creator and creature, and problematic aspects of participation ontologies. Calvin’s theology shows a logic of participation that is more theologically balanced than the idea of deification. While the terminology of deification is unhelpful, the aspects of participation (in Christ) and transformation suit a Reformed theology well
Speculative Ecopoetics on ‘The Human’: With Suzanne Césaire, Édouard Glissant, and Audre Lorde
No full textCaribbean thinkers Suzanne Césaire and Édouard Glissant introduce their readers to more-than-human figures – the plant-human and beach walker respectively – that theorize new ways of being. Accompanied by an epistemological shift, the figures disrupt Western colonial binaries and render them inoperative. This paper argues via Audre Lorde’s work that we can understand these speculations on ‘the human’ as a double move of creating one’s being and a new (self-)understanding thereof. The result is an aesthetic strategy that enables experimentation with the category of the human, surpassing reductive universals
Democracy without Demos: A Prefigurative Approach to Democratic Peoplehood
No full textWho or what is the collective entity known to democracy as the demos? Different arguments abound, but radical democrats frequently critique liberal democrats for continuing to reify the demos, thereby stifling its agency. They often conclude that, ontologically, the demos does not exist. But how could an entity that does not exist nonetheless act? It is not always clear what the alternatives would entail. In this paper, I suggest interpreting the demos as a prefigurative category. I argue, in short, that the demos exists only insofar as collective agents act as if they are the demos

Echoes of Dissent: The Transformative Power of Sound in Iran\u27s Urban Nightscapes
No full textThe suppression of public dissent in Iran has catalysed alternative forms of resistance, most notably Nocturnal Rooftop Slogan Chanting (NRSC). This study explores NRSC as an urban phenomenon, illuminating its role in reshaping nightscapes under an authoritarian regime. How can politically disenfranchised citizens reclaim urban spaces and assert their voices under oppressive conditions? It is argued that NRSC creates alternative sonic geographies, challenging conventional narratives of nightscapes and expanding spaces of dissent. Combining theoretical analysis with empirical observations, this study includes a thematic analysis of 158 videos of NRSC from 2021 to 2023 and provides insights into the characteristics and content of these protests. The findings reveal that NRSC fosters communal identities and challenges state control through the creation of dispersed, anonymous, yet interconnected acts of sonic occupation. It thus transforms urban nights into platforms for collective expression and symbolic resistance. The study also demonstrates that NRSC\u27s effectiveness lies in its ability to leverage the urban nightscape, particularly the vertical dimension of rooftops, to create a pervasive soundscape of dissent. It invites further research into the role of sensory experiences in shaping political landscapes and suggests a re-evaluation of urban nights as crucial spaces of identity formation and resistance

No full textThis paper presents arguments from a corpus study that confirm the claim by Jack Hoeksema that extraction from PPs and subjects is possible in Dutch. Hoeksema presents data involving relative clauses. but we show that similar cases can be found in WH-questions as well. The suggestion that these are restricted to PP-arguments of a noun is problematic, however, as there are no clear tests for distinguishing PP-arguments of a noun from PP-adjuncts
