Polyculed: A Writer’s Tale of Surviving the Pandemic and a Polycule
No full textThrough the lens of life writing, this essay explores contemporary and historical polyamory and its relationship with identity-formation and artistic personae. In particular, the essay triangulates the lives of Virginia Woolf and members of the Bloomsbury Set with a current-day polycule of artists. Polyamorous sexual identities and politics are further explored through descriptive depictions of social class, mobility, and wealth, especially within the realm of academia, and examines how the resultant poly lifestyle bears upon the lives of creative writers, literary scholars, and artists
Critical Naturalism: Replies to the Critics of the Manifesto
No full textIn this paper, we comment and discuss the fifteen replies that interpret, solicit, problematize, and further develop our Critical Naturalism: A Manifesto (Krisis 42(1)), that have been published in Krisis 43(1). In the paper, we address four overarching topics that we see emerging from the replies: Histories and traditions of criticial naturalism; the relation between theory and praxis; the question of what is critical about critical naturalism; and finally the question of utopia. Additionally, we discuss three general types of attitudes that our critics take to the Manifesto.

Lietje Bauwens and Tivadar Vervoort interviewed Daniel Loick for the occasion of his newest book, Die Überlegenheit der Unterlegenen (Suhrkamp 2024), which discusses a standpoint-theoretical approach to the politics of counter-communities—marginalized social groups that develop better forms of life than those typical of hegemonic social formations
To Conserve is To Create: a Review of Spinoza’s Paradoxical Conservatism
No full textIn this book, François Zourabichvili addresses three major themes of Spinoza’s philosophy, namely ethical emendation, childhood, and politics. Through the notion of transformation, the author argues that Spinozism is a “paradoxical conservatism” insofar as the Dutch philosopher develops a theory in which a transformation of the essence means death, and the main concern of this system is to create something that will be able to conserve itself. In this review, I argue that by linking together the problems of emendation, pedagogy, and political change, Zourabichvili grants a striking political relevance to both ethical emendation and pedagogy, introducing an alternative to revolutionary change without being less radical
The History of Reception as a Battlefield: French uses of “Spinoza” in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
No full textThe French reception of Spinoza during the nineteenth and twentieth century shows that what we call the “reception” of a corpus must be understood in a quite different way than the word suggests. The receiver must be disposed to make use of the corpus, and this attitude is determined by the receiver’s position within the structure of the academic or intellectual field. Spinoza was received in France in the early nineteenth century because it played a strategical role in the debate about pantheism as an atheism. But the “Spinoza” that was inherited was a corpus of works, while a certain reading of it had been elaborated in another context for other goals, namely, that of German idealism. Reception is not merely passive: the receivers impose their own structure to what affects them. At first, “Spinoza” was a figure or a label that played a role in a battlefield. This is still true for what we may call (albeit not in an ontological sense) the “materialist” reception in the 1960s. Yet, it was not doomed to give a purely imaginative knowledge of “Spinoza”: a better knowledge of the corpus, international exchanges between scholars of all over the world, and history of reception itself, made a rational knowledge of Spinozism, and even a singular understanding of Spinoza, possible

No full textTot de meest prominente slachtoffers van karaktermoord in politiek en media tijdens de jaren zeventig behoorde minister en wethouder Irene Vorrink (1918-1996) van de Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA). Zowel tijdens haar ministerschap in het kabinet-Den Uyl (1973-1977), als tijdens haar wethouderschap in Amsterdam (1978-1979) was Vorrink bewust en publiekelijk doel van seksistische en negatieve weergaven in de pers die op fatale wijze haar politieke geloofwaardigheid ondermijnden. Het dieptepunt bereikte deze karaktermoord tijdens haar wethouderschap, met als gevolg dat burgers, opgestookt door de media, én journalisten haar aftreden eisten
Dus ik vind dat de kantine eerder een opknapbeurt verdient! Standpuntmarkeringen in argumentatieve teksten van leerlingen uit de onderbouw van het voorgezet onderwijs
No full textIn dit onderzoek gaan we na op welke wijze leerlingschrijvers uit de onderbouw van het voortgezet onderwijs in argumentatieve teksten hun standpunten markeren. Ook onderzoeken we of en hoe standpuntmarkeringen samenhangen het niveau van het onderwijs dat de leerlingen volgen, het leerjaar waarin zij zitten en de kwaliteit van hun tekst. De analyse van 710 standpunten in 402 teksten laat zien dat de leerlingen hun standpunten vrijwel altijd markeren en dat zij daarbij putten uit een breed repertoire aan vormen. Hoogfrequente vormen van markering die ook in de omgangstaal heel gangbaar lijken, worden door alle groepen schrijvers in min of meer gelijke mate gehanteerd. Onderwijsniveau en tekstkwaliteit hangen wel samen met markeringsvormen die verwijzen naar de effecten van argumentatie en naar conclusies en die daarmee blijk geven van meer gevorderde representaties van schrijver, tekst en lezer
Leren van en over kwantificeren in de praktijk met Jack
No full textBinnen de taalkunde is in de afgelopen decennia een schat aan inzichten opgedaan over de wijze waarop kinderen in de leeftijd van 4 tot 6 jaar betekenis toekennen aan zinnen met een kwantor. Helaas lijken deze resultaten niet of nauwelijks doorgedrongen te zijn in de psychologie, orthopedagogiek of praktijk van het primair onderwijs. De huidige ontwikkelingen op het gebied van sociale interactive agents (SIA’s) in combinatie met eerdere inzichten op het gebied van natural language processing (NLP), maakt dit wel mogelijk. Sterker nog, een ontwerpgerichte benadering van een dergelijke sociale interactive agent, die ik de naam Jack meegeef, vormt het ideale vertrekpunt voor verder interdisciplinair (praktijkgericht) onderzoek naar deze bouwstenen van ons logisch redeneervermogen
