Thinking with Cormac McCarthy
This brief essay honor the recently deceased American author Cormac McCarthy by interpreting a short scene from one of his screenplays as a modern instance of genuinely tragic understanding. This interpretation is compared on the one hand with a related yet comedic version of tragic knowledge, and on the other hand with the play "Oedipus the King" by Sophocles. The essay argues that fostering the presentiment of such tragic understanding might be a an effective way of motivating people to act to avert climate change
Spinoza’s Place in Twentieth Century Anglo-American Philosophy
This paper began as an address at the 100th anniversary celebration of the Vereniging het Spinozahuis in Amsterdam in 1997. I trace the highlights of Spinoza reception and scholarship in the Anglo-American philosophical community from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. Beginning with the British Idealists’ enthusiasm for Spinoza as a systematic metaphysician, I move through the indifference of the (anti-metaphysical) positivists to the renewal of interest among more naturalistically-minded analytical philosophers in the second half of the twentieth century. Along the way there are brief discussions of a few individual thinkers who engaged with Spinoza in especially interesting or influential ways, such as Caird, Santayana, Russell, Wolfson, Hampshire, and Curley

Mi-e Dor De Tine: Light Festivals, Emotional Narratives and Romanian Diaspora
This paper explores the significance of urban light festivals and their role in contributing to transnational identities and narratives through a detailed study of the Mi-e Dor De Tine project. This public art project serves as an example of how light-based installations shape transnational affective experiences, particularly within the Romanian diaspora across various locations around the world. Through an ethnographic and netnographic study conducted from 2018 to 2024, this research critically engages with Mi-e Dor De Tine project within the frameworks of aesthetic capitalism, affect theory, and transnationalism. The paper emphasizes that urban light festivals not only serve as tools for urban regeneration and cultural diplomacy but also play a vital role in affirming and developing complex urban identities and affective experiences
Shadowplay: Interactions of Artificial Illumination and Darkness
This article explores the aesthetic and philosophical aspects of shadowplay: the multiple and layered interactions between artificial illumination and darkness in urban environments. By examining the concept of shadows through the perspectives of theorists Roy Sorensen and Jun\u27ichiro Tanizaki, I explore the dynamic tension between darkness, seen as a natural phenomenon, and the fragmented light created by modern technology. The study delves into how artificial light transforms the nocturnal city, influencing both urban life and aesthetic experiences. The first section of the paper addresses darkness in philosophical aesthetics, referencing thinkers such as Kant and Burke, and considers recent research on artificial illumination\u27s ecological and social impacts. The second part analyzes the unique qualities of shadows, drawing from Tanizaki\u27s appreciation for traditional Japanese aesthetics and Sorensen\u27s analytic dissection of shadow phenomena in terms of privation. Through a combination of philosophical inquiry and visual artistic research, the article seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how shadows and artificial light contribute to the aesthetic and emotional experience of contemporary urban nights
