    Gereformeerde voorbereidingsvragen voor het avondmaal

    No full text
In this article, the authors discuss the origin, development and practice of a set of questions the Dienstboek voor de Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk in ontwerp (1955) offers for the Lord’s Supper preparation services. In answering the questions, churchgoers profess their faith, just as they did when they sought admission to the Lord’s Supper. The editing of the questions changed over time. The questions originated in East Frisia, but in their later editing were partly stamped by the Kirchenordnung (1563) of the Palatinate. Local congregations in both most northern provinces, but especially in Groningen, have adopted the questions from Emden. The provincial synod of Groningen prescribed them in 1659, but the reception in its jurisdiction has been variable. The same was true of the questions prescribed by Synod of the Netherlands Reformed Church in 1817 for the entire country. Nowadays, they are still sporadically in use

Because no one wants to die alone: Relationship initiation and dissolution behaviors associated with the fear of being single

    No full text
Here we replicate previous work on the fear of being single (FBS), personality, attachment, and relationship-contingent self-esteem, and also examine whether those with high FBS attempt to initiate romantic relationships more frequently and are more motivated by continued romantic attraction to remain friends with ex-partners than others. In line with prior work, FBS was positively associated with anxious attachment, relationship-contingent self-esteem, and emotionality. FBS was negatively associated with relationship initiation behaviors. Similarly, single men were more likely to attempt to initiate a romantic relationship with an opposite-sex friend than were single women, particularly if they were low in FBS. Although FBS was not associated with whether or not an individual remains friends with ex-partners, there was an association between FBS and continued romantic attraction as a motivator behind these friendships

Bridging the gaps: Comparing structural equation models to network analysis models of depression, anxiety, and perfectionism

Network models of psychopathology can identify specific items/symptoms that explain the connections among broader constructs such as depression, anxiety, and perfectionism. In two studies, we examine the dynamic interplay between depression, anxiety, and perfectionism symptoms among undergraduates using structural equation modeling (SEM) and network analysis. Participants in two independent samples (N = 774 and N = 759) completed online, cross-sectional questionnaires including measures of anxiety, depressive symptoms, and perfectionism (i.e., concerns over mistakes, doubts about actions, and personal standards). When analyzing data in the traditional fashion using SEM as a point of comparison, results from both samples were consistent with the existing literature. After controlling for all other perfectionism variables in the model, concerns over mistakes and doubts about actions were positively associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms (βs from .21 to .46), while personal standards showed negative associations with depressive symptoms (β = -.20 both samples) and non-significant associations with anxiety symptoms (βs from -.09. to -.03). Nonetheless, model fit for the confirmatory factor model was below ideal cutoffs in the second sample, suggesting other structures (e.g., a network model) might better represent the data. Network analyses revealed associations between constructs at the item level across both samples. Four key symptoms emerged as central nodes linking depression, anxiety, and perfectionism: difficulty taking initiative to do activities, feeling worthless, feeling close to panic, and doubts about simple everyday activities. This study underscores the importance of investigating item-level associations for a nuanced interpretation of these constructs

De Goaldene Brulloft fan Paulus Scheltema

    No full text
Paulus Scheltema’s De Goaldene Brulloft is a short prose story, written in Frisian, about a golden wedding anniversary in a well-to-do farmer’s family in 1664. The story is complemented with a biography of a man who attended the feast when he was ten years old, together with the names of his ancestors. It is written in an archaizing language, as is only known from Scheltema. Ten versions of the story are known, all of them undated. They resemble each other, but still differ somewhat. Two of them have been published earlier, the one, edited here, in 1831, the other one in 1841. The 1831 version distinguishes itself from the other nine by adding a kind of justification by the author and a multitude of adoptions from Gysbert Japix. In this article, I seek to answer a number of questions concerning occasion, influences and idea to write a story about this subject; to establish the date and development of the various versions; to uncover the reason and nature of the language; to unravel fact from fiction; to determine the author’s attitude towards the past in literary prose; and to assess the relation with the prevailing literary fashion

    Luthers Magnificat

    No full text
Luther’s pastoral commentary on Mary’s Magnificat is characteristic of his theology and spirituality. This article examines how Luther understood the ancient veneration of Mary that was in vogue in his own time, and how his explanation differs from the established opinion. The latter is explained and substantiated by a sketch of the vision of experientia and humilitas that unfold in the Magnificat. This essay shows that Luther’s Mariology is marked by the dialectic of his theology of the cross

    Gezelle, natuur en ‘duurzaamheid’

Sustainability, a term used by the poet Guido Gezelle as early as 1871, is now a key concept in the environmental debate, such as in the Brundtland Report (1987), which contained an influential definition of sustainable development: ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. This always concerns economic, social and ecological needs. This essay explores Gezelle’s interpretation of sustainability as a theological concept: God is sustainability, His creation is expressed in nature and in the cosmos; nature is the teacher of theology

Gods schepselen. Dieren in het licht van schepping, verlossing en voltooiing

In light of the increasing attention to animal welfare, this article examines the place of animals in Christian tradition and Biblical focus on creation, redemption, and consummation. The article argues that animals are integral to God’s plan for all creation, and then briefly looks at the question whether animals in the new creation will be newly created, resurrected or immortal. The article shows that God’s care extends to all living things and that animals have a place in God’s plan of redemption. This points to the need for a renewed focus on animals within Christian theology
