Posterior hemivertebrectomy for correction of congenital kyphosis in adulthood: case report and literature review
Congenital kyphosis is an infrequent cause of kyphosis with a potential severe progressive deformity and neurological damage. There are few reports in the literature about congenital kyphosis focusing on adults. Case presentation: 24-year-old male with progressive dorsal pain, paresthesias, and numbness in his legs. Physical examination demonstrated a rigid kyphotic deformity with tenderness on the apex, neurologically intact. The diagnosis was a T10 butterfly posterior hemivertebra with segmental kyphosis of 48 degrees. The patient was treated surgically with a single posterior procedure, performing a complete T10 hemivertebrectomy and instrumented fixation from T8 to T12. The postoperative assessment demonstrated a segmental kyphosis of 14 degrees with 34º of correction, without surgical complications, and good functional results during 4 years of follow-up. Conclusion: Posterior-only hemivertebra resection is an effective procedure for treating congenital kyphosis, providing an excellent correction of the deformity with a good functional outcome. Intraoperative imaging tools, such as CT scans and navigation systems, can aid in performing the surgery and improve outcomes
Metaphores of time across cultures
TIME is a highly abstract concept and prevalent in languages worldwide. Cross-cultural and cross-linguistic research suggests that TIME is embodied dissimilarly in different languages. Still the literature has not received sufficient attention in examining the differences. This study aimed to identify and compare how TIME is metaphorically represented and embodied worldwide. We investigated 14 languages; Arabic, Assamese, Chinese, English, Finnish, French, German, Japanese, Kikuyu, Persian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish, which represent nine language families. The metaphors were categorized conceptually as TIME IS AN ORGANISM, TIME IS MOTION, TIME IS SPACE, and TIME IS A VALUABLE COMMODITY. We employed a two-part paper-based task. The first part consisted of generation of metaphor items and the second part consisted of a valence rating task. The key variables considered were 'metaphor category' and 'language family' while controlling for demographic variables such as gender, age and handedness. Data from 513 participants were collected. Results showed a significant association between language categories and the valences of time metaphors. The data of this study suggest that within the languages of a certain category, there might be some similarity between the valences of words that are used to realize a given conceptual metaphor
Background: The extraction of wisdom teeth without a correct diagnosis and planning can lead to diverse complications, such as injury to the structures within inferior alveolar canal, affecting the quality of life of the patient.
Objective: To know the proximity of third molar roots to the inferior alveolar canal in cone beam computed tomography scans from the Radiology Service of Finis Terrae University between the years 2019 to 2022.
Materials and methods: An observational descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. 211 cone beam computed tomography scans obtained from the Radiology Service of Faculty of Dentistry of Finis Terrae University between the years 2019 and 2022 database were analyzed, which were acquired through the equipment Kavo OP 3D Pro. To classify the proximity of lower third molar roots to the inferior alveolar canal the Tanaka classification (Type I, II, III, IV, V) was used, considering gender and whether the tooth was located on the right or the left side.
Results: Of the 211 CBTs analyzed, only a total of 70 CBCTs were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. 68.6% are female and 31.4% are male. In general, the most prevalent type according to the Tanaka classification was type III with 40.5%. When analyzed by side, both the right and left sides showed a higher prevalence of type III with 31.7% and 44.6% respectively.
Discussions and conclusions: A high prevalence of cases where the roots of the wisdom tooth contact the upper wall of the inferior alveolar canal were evident, confirming the existence of proximity between both
Collaborative consumption in an emerging market: what motivates consumers to adopt it under economic and political uncertainty?
This study presents a consumption model tailored for emerging markets beyond BRICS, which considers the advantages of a sharing economy service and its impact on user behavioral intention. Moreover, it integrates moderating variables to enhance the understanding of consumer behavior toward adopting collaborative consumption services, making two significant contributions to the existing literature. By drawing data from 270 customers from Chile and utilizing variance-based structural equation modeling along with partial least squares techniques that use SmartPLS, the research findings highlight that convenience and enjoyment play the most pivotal roles in influencing consumer behavioral intention. Additionally, the study reveals that gender significantly moderates the relationship between convenience and purchase intention. Overall, this research sheds light on the potential of sharing economy services in emerging markets, providing valuable insights into consumer preferences and behavior, which can prove beneficial for businesses and policymakers alike
The perspective window: Origins in Malmö and its introduction in the architecture of the 1950s in Madrid
Resting energy metabolism and sweet taste preference during the menstrual cycle in healthy women
Differences in blood concentration of sex hormones in the follicular (FP) and luteal (LP) phases may influence energy metabolism in women. We compared fasting energy metabolism and sweet taste preference on a representative day of the FP and LP in twenty healthy women (25·3 (SD 5·1) years, BMI: 22·2 (SD 2·2) kg/m2) with regular self-reported menses and without the use of hormonal contraceptives. From the self-reported duration of the three prior menstrual cycles, the predicted FP and LP visits were scheduled for days 5–12 and 20–25 after menses, respectively. The order of the FP and LP visits was randomly assigned. On each visit, RMR and RQ by indirect calorimetry, sweet taste preference by the Monell two-series forced-choice tracking procedure, serum fibroblast growth factor 21 by a commercial ELISA (FGF21, a liver-derived protein with action in energy balance, fuel oxidation and sugar preference) and dietary food intake by a 24-h dietary recall were determined. Serum progesterone and oestradiol concentrations displayed the expected differences between phases. RMR was lower in the FP v. LP (5042 (SD 460) v.5197 (SD 490) kJ/d, respectively; P = 0·04; Cohen effect size, drm = 0·33), while RQ showed borderline significant higher values (0·84 (SD 0·05) v.0·81 (SD 0·05), respectively; P = 0·07; drm = 0·62). Also, in the FP v. LP, sweet taste preference was lower (12 (SD 8) v. 16 (SD 9) %; P = 0·04;drm = 0·47) concomitant with higher serum FGF21 concentration (294 (SD 164) v. 197 (SD 104) pg/ml; P < 0·01; drm = 0·66). The menstrual cycle is associated with changes in energy expenditure, sweet taste preference and oxidative fuel partitioning
The present work approaches the process of conformation and characterization that Hip Hop had in Chile between 1984 and 1990. The movement arose due to the phenomenon of globalization and the different channels of information, such as cinema and television, which made known, principally through dance, the existence of Hip Hop. Its members are mostly young people who build an individual and collective identity based on their socioeconomic and/or age marginality. The movement built a critical and confrontational character in the midst of the military dictatorship, which is why its members used the tools provided by Hip Hop to establish a series of criticisms focused mainly on the abuses committed by government institutions. Chilean Hip Hop is usually characterized in advance as a social movement, but this statement is usually timeless and / or without any basis. In this paper it is understood, within the period of study, as a new social movement in development, since, although it configured its own culture, a collective identity and a series of organizational structures, it was unable to concretize a strategy and common objectives
Effects of ketone bodies on energy expenditure, substrate utilization, and energy intake in humans
The impact of loneliness and social adaptation on depressive symptoms: Behavioral and brain measures evidence from a brain health perspective
IntroductionEarly detection of depression is a cost-effective way to prevent adverse outcomes on brain physiology, cognition, and health. Here we propose that loneliness and social adaptation are key factors that can anticipate depressive symptoms.MethodsWe analyzed data from two separate samples to evaluate the associations between loneliness, social adaptation, depressive symptoms, and their neural correlates.ResultsFor both samples, hierarchical regression models on self-reported data showed that loneliness and social adaptation have negative and positive effects on depressive symptoms. Moreover, social adaptation reduces the impact of loneliness on depressive symptoms. Structural connectivity analysis showed that depressive symptoms, loneliness, and social adaptation share a common neural substrate. Furthermore, functional connectivity analysis demonstrated that only social adaptation was associated with connectivity in parietal areas.DiscussionAltogether, our results suggest that loneliness is a strong risk factor for depressive symptoms while social adaptation acts as a buffer against the ill effects of loneliness. At the neuroanatomical level, loneliness and depression may affect the integrity of white matter structures known to be associated to emotion dysregulation and cognitive impairment. On the other hand, socio-adaptive processes may protect against the harmful effects of loneliness and depression. Structural and functional correlates of social adaptation could indicate a protective role through long and short-term effects, respectively. These findings may aid approaches to preserve brain health via social participation and adaptive social behavior
