    Rare-earth-based metal–organic frameworks with improved visible-light-harvesting properties: a quantum chemistry study

    This report proves that improving the visible-light-harvesting properties in rare-earth-based metal–organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) (labelled as RE–UiO-66, UiO = University of Oslo MOFs), with the aim of performing as potential visible-light-driven photocatalysts, is achievable. Thus, the design of MOFs with specific applications, especially those involving sunlight and material interactions, represents a growing field, which has been addressed in the herein work using quantum mechanical tools. We achieved to relate the light absorption properties with the structure in systems Y–UiO-66, Sc–UiO-66 and La–UiO-66, by evaluating the inclusion of well-known electron donor substituents in the structure of the 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC) linker (i.e. BDC-R, R: –CH3, –OH, –SH and –NH2). The electronic structure and optical properties of Y–UiO-66 were rigorously investigated using computational techniques combining molecular and periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. As a remarkable result, it was shown that including the groups –SH or –NH2 in the BDC linker, induced a shift in the absorption bands to the visible region (≥ 400 nm). Hence, a group of new RE-MOFs materials with optimal structural and photocatalytic properties is proposed. This could encourage researchers to prepare these new materials to be tested in photocatalysis, such as cleaving the C–H bond, water splitting or photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants

Algunos rasgos o comportamientos nos parecen peligrosos, lo que nos dificulta reconocer nuestra propia capacidad para hacer daño. La crueldad es inherente a los seres humanos y ha sido parte de nuestra historia, ya que hemos tenido que competir por recursos y sobrevivir. Aunque no todos actuamos de manera horrible, es crucial reconocer nuestra capacidad para causar daño. Surge la pregunta: ¿existe una relación entre la crueldad y el placer? Se propone una obra de arte que explora este tema, utilizando imágenes generadas por computadora. La obra presenta una criatura virtual interactiva que reacciona ante actitudes crueles o empáticas del espectador. Incorpora tecnología de captura de movimiento y un sensor de proximidad para establecer su comodidad o sentirse invadida, ofreciendo una reflexión sobre nuestra naturaleza humana.The relationship between our perception and how we interpret others is intriguing. Some traits or behaviors appear dangerous to us, making it difficult for us to recognize our own capacity to do harm. Cruelty is inherent in humans and has been part of our history as we have had to compete for resources and survive. While we do not all act horribly, it is crucial to recognize our capacity to cause harm. The question arises: is there a relationship between cruelty and pleasure? An artwork is proposed that explores this theme, using computer-generated imagery. The work presents an interactive virtual creature that reacts to cruel or empathetic attitudes of the viewer. It incorporates motion capture technology and a proximity sensor to establish its comfort or feel invaded, offering a reflection on our human nature

    Ensayo Crítico (Licenciado en Artes Visuales, Mención Grabado)--Universidad Finis Terrae, 2023El proyecto consiste en una instalación sonora que se concentra en una figura central de arena, conformada por un montículo y un monolito, con la presencia de dos pistas de audio: una inherente al objeto y otra que proviene del exterior, creando así una atmósfera sonora. Este trabajo explora la intersección entre la filosofía del Budismo Zen, la ciencia de la entropía y la creación artística a partir de una obra que desafía y problematiza las percepciones convencionales del sonido y la efímera naturaleza de la existencia. La impermanencia, entrelazada con la realidad y manifestada en cada resonancia y transformación de la figura de arena, se presenta como una fuerza trascendental que abraza los límites entre nosotros y el entorno. Jardín Sonoro: Presente Transitorio es una armonía que fusiona sonidos internos y externos, invita a valorar el momento presente, y convoca a una conexión más profunda con cada instante único. El monolito, un enigma humano de existencia evolutiva, emerge como un símbolo tangible de la impermanencia dentro del plano contemplativo del karesansui (Jardín seco japonés). La entropía, interpretada bajo la luz de la impermanencia, revela la constante del cambio, contenedora de diversidad y singularidad. Existir bajo posibilidades infinitas otorga a cada momento un valor único. En última instancia, esta obra se establece como un recordatorio poético de la danza efímera de la vida, donde cada sonido, cambio y momento singular componen una sinfonía única e inolvidable en el eterno fluir del tiempo.The project consists of a sound installation focused on a central sand figure, conformed by a mound and a monolith, with the presence of two audio tracks: one inherent to the object and the other coming from the outside, in order to create a sonorous atmosphere. This work explores the intersection between Zen Buddhist philosophy, the science of entropy and artistic creation through a work that challenges and problematizes conventional perceptions of sound and the ephemeral nature of existence. Impermanence, intertwined with reality and manifested in each resonance and transformation of the sand figure, is presented as a transcendental force that embraces the boundaries between us and the environment. Jardín Sonoro: Presente Transitorio, a harmony that fuses internal and external sounds, invites us to value the present moment, and summons us to a deeper connection with each unique instant. The monolith, a human enigma of evolutionary existence, emerges as a tangible symbol of impermanence within the contemplative plane of the karesansui (Japanese Dry Garden). Entropy, interpreted in the light of impermanence, reveals the constant of change, containing diversity and uniqueness. The existence under infinite possibilities gives each moment a unique value. Ultimately, this work is established as a poetic reminder of the ephemeral dance of life, where each sound, change and singular moment compose a unique and unforgettable symphony in the eternal flow of time

Aunque el hombre ha obtenido beneficios a través de sus conocimientos y adaptación a su entorno, esto ha causado daños a sí mismo y al medio ambiente. La construcción por medio de la destrucción es un reflejo de este poder por coerción y superioridad, que ha llevado a la degradación de la Tierra, y el abuso y la extinción de especies. Los daños ocasionados a sí mismo y la resistencia de la naturaleza en contra de esta destrucción, se verán reflejadas en una intervención espacial de planchas de aluminio y hormigón. La cual generará un espacio confrontacional entre el espectador, la destrucción de su entorno y su autodestrucción. Además de concientizar sobre los actos ocasionados al medio ambiente, se visualiza su destrucción paulatina fundiéndose en su propia construcción. La telaraña representa tanto el ecosistema persistiendo en los espacios urbanos, como la temporalidad de la consecuencia.The human-centred view of superiority has led people to subjugate and threaten the well-being of other ecosystems. Although humans have gained benefits through their knowledge and adaptation to their environment, this has caused damage to themselves and to the environment. Construction through destruction is a reflection of this power by coercion and superiority, which has led to the degradation of the earth, and the abuse and extinction of species. The damage done to itself and the resistance of nature against this destruction will be reflected in a spatial intervention of aluminium plates and concrete. This will generate a confrontational space between the spectator, the destruction of his environment and his own self-destruction. In addition to raising awareness of the acts caused to the environment, its gradual destruction is visualised by melting into its own construction. The spider's web represents both the ecosystem persisting in urban spaces and the temporality of the consequence

    The multidimensionality of care in remote work: women academics in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic

    The boundaries between paid and care work all but disappeared for women during COVID-19 lockdowns. All realms of life merged into the household while the workload shouldered by women heavily increased. As external support for care vanished, gender orders became obvious as the burden of care was re-established as the personal responsibility of women. Based on fifteen photo-elicited interviews with women academics in Chile who worked remotely during lockdown, this study poses a multidimensional notion of care that captures academic, highly skilled women’s care work in three dimensions: (1) care as assistance (care for others); (2) care as survival (self-care); and (3) care as a symbolic burden in the labour market. The study suggests that these different dimensions of care reveal the articulation of women’s care labour with family, paid and unpaid work, and institutional regimes, contributing to the reproduction of gender inequality

Esto se debe a que las políticas públicas y de seguridad, específicamente las leyes de Seguridad Interior del Estado y Ley Antiterrorista han sido utilizadas como medidas de prevención y de seguridad en el Conflicto Mapuche desde el hito del 01 de diciembre de 1997, con la quema de tres camiones en Lumaco. Por lo que nuestra investigación, tiene como objetivo principal analizar la implementación de las políticas públicas de Seguridad del Estado en el conflicto de la Araucanía, inspiradas por la idea de Seguridad del Estado, entre los años 1997-2018, a través de la revisión de periódicos, leyes y documentos oficiales del Estado.The present work seeks to observe how the application of State security policies have been developed in the Mapuche Conflict in the Araucanía region between 1997 and 2018. This is because public and security policies, specifically the laws of State Internal Security and the Antiterrorist Law have been used as prevention and security measures in the Mapuche Conflict since the milestone of December 1, 1997, with the burning of three trucks in Lumaco. Therefore, our research has as its main objective to analyze the implementation of State Security public policies in the Araucanía conflict, inspired by the idea of State Security, between the years 1997-2018, through the review of newspapers, laws and official documents of the State

    Editorial: Recent advances in renewable energy automation and energy forecasting

    Renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power are gaining popularity as we work towards a more sustainable future. However, their intermittent and often unpredictable nature, creates challenges for the energy industry in terms of being able to ensure continuous electric power generation over regular periods of time. Thus, accurate forecasting of renewable energy output is crucial for their reliable integration into the power grid. In this regard, automation and machine learning have made significant improvements in energy forecasting by enabling more precise predictions of energy output. Advanced algorithms and high-performance computing systems allow for better grid management and increased power generation systems’ efficiency. Automation is also being used for the operation and maintenance of renewable energy systems. Real-time monitoring and control systems enable a rapid response to changes in weather conditions, optimizing energy production. This editorial summarizes recent advancements in renewable energy automation and energy forecasting, which are critical areas for achieving a sustainable energy future. The Research Topic covers areas like machine learning-based energy forecasting, control and optimization of renewable energy systems, and the integration of renewable energy into microgrids as shown in Figure 1. Continued research and development in renewable energy automation and energy forecasting are essential for the transition towards a sustainable energy future

    An IoT-based intelligent smart energy monitoring system for solar PV power generation

    As the world’s attention turns to cleaner, more dependable, and sustainable resources, the renewable energy sector is rising quickly. The decline in world energy use and climate change are the two most significant factors nowadays. PV forecasting was essential to enhancing the efficiency of the real-time control system and preventing any undesirable effects. The smart energy management systems of distributed energy resources, the forecasting model of irradiation received from the sun, and therefore PV energy production might mitigate the impact of uncertainty on PV energy generation, improve system dependability, and increase the incursion level of solar power generation. Smart sensors and Internet of Things technologies are essential for monitoring and controlling applications in a broad range of fields. As a result, solar power generation forecasting was essential for microgrid stability and security, as well as solar photovoltaic integration in a strategic approach. This paper examines how to use IoT, a solar photovoltaic system being monitored, and shows the proposed monitoring system is a potentially viable option for smart remote and in-person monitoring of a solar PV system
