Hypophosphatemia in ICU: It’s not all refeeding syndrome
Ultrasound-assisted extraction and microencapsulation of durvillaea incurvata polyphenols: toward a stable anti-inflammatory ingredient for functional foods
Durvillaea incurvata, a Chilean brown seaweed, exhibits high antioxidant activity and polyphenol content, positioning it as a promising candidate for developing bioactive food ingredients. This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of an ethanolic extract of Durvillaea incurvata, produced via ultrasound-assisted extraction, and its subsequent microencapsulation to obtain a functional food-grade ingredient. The extract’s anti-inflammatory capacity was assessed in vitro through hyaluronidase inhibition, and its cytotoxicity was evaluated using gastrointestinal cell models (HT-29 and Caco-2). Microencapsulation was performed by spray-drying with maltodextrin, and encapsulation efficiency (EE) was optimized using response surface methodology. Characterization included scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The extract exhibited low cytotoxicity (cell viability > 75%). Optimal encapsulation conditions (inlet temperature: 198.28 °C, maltodextrin: 23.11 g/100 g) yielded an EE of 72.7% ± 1.2% and extract recovery (R) of 45.9% ± 2.4%. The microparticles (mean diameter, 2.75 µm) exhibited a uniform morphology, shell formation, glassy microstructure, and suitable physicochemical properties (moisture, 3.4 ± 0.1%; water activity, 0.193 ± 0.004; hygroscopicity, 30.3 ± 0.4 g/100 g) for food applications. These findings support the potential of microencapsulated Durvillaea incurvata extract as an anti-inflammatory ingredient for functional food development
What It Takes to Win: Examining Predicted Versus Actual Swimming Performances at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and What Comes Next
Predictions of performances should be evaluated to confirm their accuracy. Work by this group has resulted in 3 sets of predictions being generated for swimming events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, using the same statistical approach for each set. Purpose: To examine the accuracy of swimming predictions for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and generate updated predictions for both the Singapore 2025 World Aquatics Championships and Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Methods: A linear regression and forecasting function was used to generate predictions for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games across 3 performance categories (rank 1st–3rd, 4th–8th, and 9th–16th). Mean absolute error was used to assess the accuracy of the predicted versus actual Paris 2024 Olympic Games times for all events across the 3 performance categories. New predictions for the 2028 Olympic cycle were subsequently generated using results from the World Championships and Olympic Games between 2011 and 2024. Results: Across all events, a mean absolute error value of 0.84% was observed between the Paris 2024 Olympic Games predicted and actual times. Predicted times were highly correlated with actual times (r2 = .99). Across the 3 sets of predictions (created in 2022, 2023, and 2024), the 2023 set of predictions had the lowest overall mean absolute error value (0.55%). Conclusions: The methods used to create predictions for swimming performances at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
were deemed accurate. These methods enable national swimming federations to create a series of predictions for a given major championship, inform athlete identification and development pathways, and allocate appropriate resources, including sport-science provision
What Is “Zone 2 Training”?: Experts’ Viewpoint on Definition, Training Methods, and Expected Adaptations
The role of high-volume low-intensity training for enhancing endurance performance has gained growing interest in recent years. Specifically, so-called “zone 2 training” is currently receiving much attention, and many propose that this is the target intensity at which a large proportion of total endurance training should be performed. However, despite the popularity of this concept, there is no clear consensus among coaches, athletes, and scientists regarding the definition of zone 2 training. Purpose: This commentary summarizes the perspectives, experience, and knowledge of an expert panel of 14 applied sport scientists and professional coaches with the aim of providing insight and a basis for definitional consensus on zone 2 training. Moreover, potential training strategies at this intensity are proposed, and the expected physiological adaptations when exercising at this intensity and related research gaps are also discussed. Results: Experts reached consensus that zone 2 training should preferably be performed at intensities located immediately below the first lactate or ventilatory threshold through continuous, variable, or interval-type sessions. Furthermore, experts expected a broad range of central and peripheral adaptations from zone 2 training. These expected adaptations might not be unique to zone 2 and could also be induced with sessions performed at slightly higher and lower intensities. Conclusions: This commentary provides practical insight and unified criteria regarding the preferred intensity, duration, and session type for the optimization of zone 2 training based on the perspectives of acknowledged sport scientists and professional coaches
Understanding how software project managers learn using kolb's learning style inventory
Teaching project managers involves conveying complex concepts in an accessible manner while fostering strategic thinking and promoting problem-solving skills using specific methodologies. Additionally, continuing education requires techniques for meaningful learning that balance theory with practice and build upon professional experience. However, unlike other software development roles, little is understood about how software project managers (SPMs) can learn effectively. Therefore, this research aimed to identify teaching techniques that better align with SPMs' learning styles. Kolb's learning styles test was administered to 27 project managers to determine their preferences in this regard. The surveyed SPMs leaned towards abstract conceptualization, exhibiting a balance between active experimentation and reflective observation, with the thinking style best reflecting these preferences. Building on this, some SPM-centered teaching guides were adapted from existing knowledge on teaching professionals with Kolb's thinking learning style.
Merit as an attitude: chilean school communities’ repertoires in Chile and the perception of the “good student” in a post‐pandemic scenario
Due to its commodification policies, the Chilean educational system is a paradigmatic case for study. It comprises private subsidies, achievement incentives, competition, selection, and segregation. After years of student and social protests, the 2015 Inclusion Law mandated that publicly funded schools accept all admitted students. Critics argue this restricts family choice and undermines merit. The COVID-19 pandemic further deepened inequalities, exposing contradictions in a merit-based system. This article examines how meritocratic ideals emerged post-pandemic in parents’ and teachers’ perceptions of school communities within a neoliberal educational model promoting meritocratic values alongside inclusive policies. Based on 32 interviews with parents and teachers from two private and two publicly funded schools in Santiago, findings show meritocracy is deeply entrenched, even in public education. The “meritorious student” is defined beyond academics, encompassing behavior, responsibility, and respect—traits also expected of families. The importance of effort as a mechanism for improvement permeates the notion of the “good student”, thereby overshadowing the importance of inclusive educational environments, as merit also becomes relativised by the post-pandemic scenario. The deep educational inequalities and behavioural problems force teachers and parents to focus on and solve different aspects rather than academic achievements. Merit, as understood by educational communities, is perceived as a process and an attitude intertwined with social opportunities
Manchester oxford foot questionnaire in foot and ankle Spanish patients: Transcultural adaption and validation
Background: Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ) has shown the best psychometric properties to evaluate patient-related outcomes in foot and ankle(F&A) surgeries. The aim is adapting and validating the MOXFQ for European-Spanish population, while assessing its psychometric properties.
Method: Translation and cross-cultural adaption (MOXFQ-EUROSpa) was performed from MOXFQ-English original test. Its psychometric properties (reliability, internal consistency, floor and ceiling effects, construct validity and responsiveness) were calculated in 102 patients operated of orthopaedic F&A surgery in a Spanish hospital between 2021 and 2022. It was applied MOXFQ-EUROSpa, VAS-pain and EURO-QoL questionnaires. Data analyzed with SPSS.13.0; p-value < 0.05
Results: MOXFQ-EUROSpa showed excellent reliability (ICC=0.94 MOXFQ-index) and strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.95 MOXFQ-index). Strong correlation with EuroQoL and VAS-pain confirmed validity. Good to excellent responsiveness for all domains, except MOXFQ-social(moderate). Postoperative MOXFQ-social had a floor effect.
Conclusion: MOXFQ-EUROSpa demonstrated good psychometric properties therefore it should be considered to evaluate elective foot and ankle procedures results.
