    We present biomarker, foraminiferal abundance, stable isotope and trace element data from sediment cores JM11-FI-19PC and LINK16 from the southern Norwegian Sea during 130-110 ka. Sediment core JM11-FI-19PC was retrieved from a water depth of 1179 m northwest of the Faroe Islands (62°49′N, 03°52′W). Sediment core LINK 16 was retrieved from a water depth of 773 from the northeast of the Faeroe–Shetland Channel (62°36′N, 3°31′W). For sediment core LINK16, brassicasterol (24-methylcholesta-5, 22E-dien-3β-ol), IP25 (a C25 Isoprenoid Lipid), benthic foraminiferal assembalges, and foraminiferal stable isotope data are provided. For sediment core JM-FI-19PC, brassicasterol , IP25 and foraminiferal Na/Ca and Ba/Ca are provided. The age models of both sediment cores M11-FI-19PC and LINK 16 are provided

    This dataset contains background data and supplementary material for a methodological study on the use of ordinal response scales in linguistic research. For the literature survey reported in that study, which examines how rating scales are used in current linguistic research (4,441 papers from 16 linguistic journals, published between 2012 and 2022), it includes a tabular file listing the 406 research articles that report ordinal rating scale data. This file records annotated attributes of the studies and rating scales. Further the dataset includes summary data gathered in a review of the psychometric literature on the interpretation of quantificational expressions that are often used to build graded scales. Empirical findings are collected for five rating scale dimensions: agreement (1 study), intensity (3 studies), frequency (17 studies), probability (11 studies), and quality (3 studies). Finally, the post includes new data from 20 informants on the interpretation of the quantifiers "few", "some", "many", and "most". Abstract: Related publication Ordinal scales are commonly used in applied linguistics. To summarize the distribution of responses provided by informants, these are usually converted into numbers and then averaged or analyzed with ordinary regression models. This approach has been criticized in the literature; one caveat (among others) is the assumption that distances between categories are known. The present paper illustrates how empirical insights into the perception of response labels may inform the design and analysis stage of a study. We start with a review of how ordinal scales are used in linguistic research. Our survey offers insights into typical scale layouts and analysis strategies, and it allows us to identify three commonly used rating dimensions (agreement, intensity, and frequency). We take stock of the experimental literature on the perception of relevant scale point labels and then demonstrate how psychometric insights may direct scale design and data analysis. This includes a careful consideration of measurement-theoretic and statistical issues surrounding the numeric-conversion approach to ordinal data. We focus on the consequences of these drawbacks for the interpretation of empirical findings, which will enable researchers to make informed decisions and avoid drawing false conclusions from their data. We present a case study on yous(e) in British and Scottish English, which shows that reliance on psychometric scale values can alter statistical conclusions, while also giving due consideration to the key limitations of the numeric-conversion approach to ordinal data analysis

    Database of 6,771 dated Iron Age burials from South Norway This study examines population dynamics in South Norway during the Iron Age, focusing on the mid-6th century crisis and its aftermath. Analysis of nearly 7,000 dated burials reveals a substantial decline of over 75 per cent post-6th century compared with the preceding period. Set against other archaeological data, this indicates a decline in the population of South Norway. The period of societal turmoil and decline may have started earlier, but was likely catalysed by the volcanic eruptions of 536 and 540 CE and the following colder period, and possible also by plague pandemics. The ramifications of the mid-6th century crisis were exacerbated by the population increase in the preceding periods, where the population may have been nearing its regional carrying capacity. Although devastating, the 6th century crisis may also have opened up new possibilities for those who made it through, perhaps initiating a brief period of relative social and economic equality, similar to the initial consequences of the Black Death. Contrasting with the 6th century, South Norway’s Viking Age saw ample burials, attributed to factors including a warmer climate, advanced agriculture, surplus production, trade expansion and increased slavery. The shift highlights complex interactions between environmental, economic and social factors in the shaping of population dynamics in Iron Age South Norway.</p

    GNSS Scintillation Data (60 s) at Longyearbyen in 2023

    This data set contains phase and amplitude scintillation data at 60 seconds time resolution at Kjell Henriksen Observatory (KHO) at Longyearbyen, Svalbard. The measurements were collected by the University of Bergen using a NovAtel GPStation-6 global navigation satellite system receiver. The measurements include signals from GPS, GLONASS, and GALILEO at different frequencies. These data are used for research on space weather disturbances in the polar ionosphere.     Data of uniaxial compression in different temperatures for frozen soil from Svalbard, Longyearbyen UNIS EAST site

    This dataset contains measurements of uniaxial compression tests for a series of cylindrical frozen soil samples gathered in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, near the UNIS location, UNIS EAST. The samples are cylinders of approximately 100 mm in height and 50 mm in diameter (the accurate heights and diameters of each sample are displayed). The examined frozen soil is a silty loam, low-plasticity clay type. It was gathered and tested for a master's thesis that studied time-dependent deformation under uniaxial compression in frozen soil. Two types of tests were performed for this work. The first type is uniaxial compression under a constant strain rate (CSR). The CSR tests were made to denote frozen soil's compression strength. The second type is uniaxial compression under a constant load (CL). The CL tests were made to simulate a structure that affects soil and puts pressure on it, causing time-dependent deformation. File Uniaxial_compression contains the results of each tested sample. The names of the samples denote which borehole it was (B01, B02, or B03), what depth the sample was gathered from (for example, 3.70-3.80 means that the sample is from 3.70 and 3.80-meter depth from the surface level), and the last part informs on the type of test (CSR or CL). The dataset also provides ground temperature results from 2 other boreholes at 30 meters depth close to the location of the gathered samples. The results of a series of loggers that measured temperature every 6 hours from 2017-08-24 to 2024-02-26 at certain depths until 30 meters from surface level are displayed in the file Ground_temperature. The last part of the dataset adds measured temperatures inside the laboratory where uniaxial compression took place. The results display temperature measurements through time for loggers, where one measured temperature inside of the dummy sample, resembling the tested sample, and another logger measured temperature outside the sample, close to the tested sample. The results are displayed in the file Labolatory_temperature. All of the tests were made by NTNU student Krystian Czerniak for the purpose of a master's thesis. A supervisor for this work, was an associate professor of UNIS Aleksey Shestov
