    TUITION FEE, GENDER AND DEMAND FOR TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN NIGERIA: ANY NEXUS?

    This study investigated the relationship between tuition fee  and demand for technical education on one hand, gender and demand for technical education on the other in Oyo State, Nigeria. The research employed a descriptive survey design. The target population was 3,641 across the five faculties of The Polytechnic, Ibadan from where 364 respondents were randomly selected. The research instrument “Tuition Fee, Gender and Demand for Technical Education Questionnaire (TFGDTEQ)” was used to collect data from students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan. The instrument was pilot tested and validated with 0.75 Chronbach alpha coefficient. The data was analysed with the use of Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to examine whether any relationship exists between each of tuition, gender of the respondents and demand for technical education in Nigeria. The result of the study revealed that tuition fee was statistically significant with demand for technical education(r = 0.554, df = 351, p<0.05). However, there was no significant relationship between gender of the respondents and demand for technical education (r = 0.008, df=351, p>0.05). The study recommended that technical education tuition fees should be affordable in such a way that people would not see technical education as one that is meant only for the poor and indigent students. In addition, technical education should be made to be gender friendly in that there should not be discrimination against any gender in terms of courses available in the technical educational institutions and the employment opportunities after the completion of the studies

    PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP STYLE AND TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN IBADAN NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OYO STATE, NIGERIA

    This study investigated principal leadership style and teacher effectiveness in public secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. Out of 1190 teachers that constituted the population for the study, a sample of 313 respondents was selected through multi-stage sampling procedure. Three hypotheses were tested. A questionnaire tagged “Leadership Style and Teacher Effectiveness” was used for data collection. The overall reliability coefficient of the instrument was found to be 0.83. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was the major statistical tool employed for data analysis. The findings revealed a significant relationship between autocratic leadership style and teacher effectiveness in public secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State (r=0.550, p<0.05). It was also shown that democratic leadership style and teacher effectiveness in public secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State were significantly related (r=0.715, p<0.05). However, it was discovered that there was no significant relationship between laissez-faire leadership style and teacher effectiveness in public secondary schools in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State (r=0.443, p>0.05). Based on the findings from the study, it was recommended that democratic style of leadership should be adopted by principals to improve their effectiveness. The principal should involve teachers in decisions that concern them like general working conditions, fringe benefits and staff development programmes as these add to the attractiveness of the organisation climate and for good effectiveness. Also, autocratic style of leadership should be adopted when necessary

    EFFECTIVE PERSONNEL RELATIONSHIP AS A TOOL FOR FOSTERING PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OLUYOLE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OYO STATE

    Success of every organisation depends on the implementation of the set objectives and relationship among the human resources. This study, thus, investigated the effective personnel relationship as a tool for fostering peaceful coexistence in public secondary schools in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted in carrying out the study. The population of the study was all teachers in public secondary schools in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State. Multi stage sampling was adopted. The study sampled 10 public secondary schools through simple random sampling technique. In each school, 15 teachers were randomly selected. A total of 150 respondents were used for the study. The research instrument adopted was a self-developed questionnaire titled “Effective Personal Relationship and Peaceful Coexistence in the School Organization Questionnaire”. Content validity of instrument was done by the experts in Educational Management and Teacher Education after which modifications were made. Also, a reliability coefficient of 0.85 was obtained using alpha Cronbach. Pearson Product Moment Correlation analysis was used to analyze the three hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was found that decision making and fostering peaceful coexistence in public secondary schools were significantly related(r=0.52;p<0.05), delegation of duties and fostering peaceful coexistence in the school organization in public secondary schools in Oluyole Local Government were also significantly related(r=0.67;p<0.05) and finally, significant relationship existed between communication network and fostering peaceful coexistence in the school organization in public secondary schools in Oluyole Local Government(r=0.46; p<0.05). Recommendations were made that school principal should embrace decision making as an instrument that foster peace coexistence, principal should see communication as a tool of success and school administrators should be able to delegate duties to his/her subordinates for effective outcome of secondary education objective

    TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON THE ADEQUACY OF EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES FOR QUALITY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION AND TEACHING IN EBONYI STATE SECONDARY SCHOOL SYSTEM

    The study evaluated the adequacy of educational resources for quality school administration and teaching in the Ebonyi State secondary school system. Description survey design with a population of 4,360 in 225 public secondary schools was used for the study. The instrument was validated by management experts while the reliability was 0.78 using Cronbach Alpha. Four (4) research questions guided the study. The responses to the questionnaire were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. A criterion mean of 2.50 was set as a decision rule. Any mean score (s) of 2.50 and above indicated that educational resources are adequate while scores below the benchmark indicate that resources are inadequate. The result revealed that educational resources are grossly inadequate for quality secondary school administration and teaching in Ebonyi State. It was therefore recommended that school administrators should synergize with Parents Teachers Association (PTAs) and other stakeholders to engage additional teaching staff and also to assist in the provision of funds and other educational facilities to supplement government effort in making school administration and teaching more effective

    Growth Performance of Clarias gariepinus Fed with Seaweed (Pistia stratiotes) Leaf Meal at Varying Inclusion Level

    Abstract This study evaluates the effect of varying inclusion levels of Pistia stratiotes leaf meal on the growth performance and haematological parameters of Clarias gariepinus juveniles.15 plastics tanks (21.5x14.5x9cm) were used for the experiment each containing 10 Clarias gariepinus juveniles which were fed with five isonitrogenous diets containing 40% crude protein with varying inclusion of Pistia stratiotes (Control diet with P. stratiotes 0%, P. stratiotes inclusion 25%, P. stratiotes inclusion 50%, P. stratiotes inclusion 75%, P. stratiotes inclusion, 100%). The fish were fed 2 times a day using 5% of their body weight from their various experimental feeds for 12 weeks. The fish in tank T3 (75% inclusion of P. stratiotes) had the best weight gain with a mean value of 61.5±0.70g. The specific growth rate was recorded in tank T3 (75% inclusion of P. stratiotes) with a mean value of 0.78±0.83 was recorded. The highest feed conversion ratio was recorded in tank T4 (100% inclusion of P. stratiotes) with a mean value of 1.91±0.70. The highest protein efficiency ratio was also recorded in T3 (75% inclusion of P. stratiotes) with a mean value of 0.03±0.01. The fish fed with P. stratiotes showed increase in haematological values of Red blood cell (RBC), (2.21±0.18), and White blood cell (WBC), (6.35±2.61) compared to the values of fish fed with control diet of Red blood cell (RBC), (1.975±0.86), and White blood cell (WBC), (4±2.96). There was a reduction in the haematological value of the fish fed with P. stratiotes in Haemoblogin (HB), (14.05±0.92) compared to the value of fish fed with control feed Haemoblogin, (12.05±4.59). It was concluded that using P. stratiotes leaves as feed for Clarias gariepinus enhances the growth of the fish and has no negative impact on the health status of the fish. Seaweeds are more available and relatively cheaper, it could be recommended that partial replacement of Seaweed in the diet of C. gariepinus at 75% inclusion level would aid fish productivity. Therefore partial replacement of feed seaweeds in the diet of Clarias gariepinus should be encouraged

    Gender Roles and Poverty Determinants of Fish Farmers’ Households in Oyo State, Nigeria

    Abstract Aquaculture can be a key engine of growth and poverty reduction in Nigeria. The sector is however underperforming partly because women who are often a crucial resource face constraints that reduce their productivity. Their non-defined roles vary considerably and are changing rapidly leading to greater depth of poverty as economic and social forces transform the aquaculture sector. This study examined gender roles and poverty determinants of fish farmers’households in Oyo State.Amultistage sampling technique was used to select 250 respondents using well-structured questionnaires based on the fourAgricultural Development Programme zoning in Oyo State. Descriptive statistics, t test, Chi square, Harvard gender analysis framework, Foster Greer and Thorbecke poverty measure (FGT) and Probit models were used to analyse the data at á0.05 Result showed that 64.4% of the fish farmers were males, with mean age of 46.27±9.38 years and 55.3% had tertiary education while 35.6% were females with mean age of 41.43±10.42. 55.1% had tertiary education. However, 89.2% had male as household head with mean age 46.56±9.18 while female headed household only 10.8% with mean age of 47.63±14.5. Nineteen fish farming activities were considered and both gender were involved in all. In 15 activities there were significant differences in participation of the roles performed while there was no significant difference in only four roles. FGT for male showed that 70.81% were poor while 29.19% were nonpoor. Poverty index was (0.2919), Poverty depth (0.1673) and poverty severity was (0.1159) while for the female, 74.16% were poor and 25.84 were non-poor. Poverty index was (0.2584), Poverty depth (0.1352) and Poverty severity was (0.0889). There was significant difference between the poor and non-poor in both gender. The result of Probit regression for male indicated that farm size and household size, were the major determinants of poverty in the study area while marital status (married), education (No education and tertiary), household size and fish farming experience were the determinant of poverty for females in the study area. Larger farm size for males and higher educational level for females should be encouraged among the fish farmers to help improve their output and make them less susceptible to poverty as well as to be food and nutrition secure

    Reservoir Characterization and Estimation of Hydrocarbon Reserves of OJ-Field, Onshore Niger Delta, Nigeria4

    The reservoir characterization of OJ-Field in the eastern onshore of Niger Delta was determined using 3-D seismicand well logs data. The main objectives are to access the potential reservoir sands with parameters that control itshydrocarbon distribution, fluid type, identify structures necessary for hydrocarbon accumulation and estimation ofhydrocarbon reserves. Structural maps of horizons in four wells containing hydrocarbon bearing zones with tops andbases at subsea depth range of -6723.93 to -9678.46ft were produced, showing the trapping mechanism to be mainlyfault-assisted roll-over structures. From the four reservoir sands delineated, Sand A (-6723.93 to -7143.18ft) is themost prolific hydrocarbon bearing with 56.07MMbbl of oil and recoverable reserve of 6.46MMbbl while Sand C(-8343.37 to -9203.15ft) is the second most prolific reservoir sand with 49.68MMbbl of oil and recoverable reserveof 11.92MMbbl. Sand D (-8471.83 to -9678.46ft), which is the second least prolific, has 31.17MMbbl of oil,112.74MMcf of gas and 0.94MMbbl recoverable reserve while the least prolific, Sand B (-7181.12 to -7877.56ft),contain 26.05MMbbl of oil with recoverable reserve of 5.25MMbbl. Also, OJ-01 well was the most promising of allthe wells considered with 65.96MMbbl of oil and recoverable reserve of 5.21MMbbl compared with OJ-02 having42.91MMbb of oil and recoverable reserve of 13.63MMbbl. OJ-04 is equally productive with 40.58MMbbl and112.74MMcf of oil and gas respectively with recoverable reserve of 3.77MMbbl while OJ-03 is the least promisingwell with 13.52MMbbl of oil that yielded recoverable reserve of 1.96MMbbl. The total net volume of the reservoirsyielded stock tank oil in place of 162.98MMbbl and gas in place of 112.74MMcf. Only, 24.58MMbbl can berecovered from the stock tank oil in place estimated and this is attributed to insufficient drive mechanism and highviscosity

    Bayesian and Classical Estimation Methods in Linear Regression Model: A Monte Carlo Simulation Analysis

    In the recent times the Bayesian approach has emerged as a strong competitor to the traditional Classical approach to econometric analysis. The main reason for the vicious controversy between the promoters of the two approaches is the notions of probability they employ. The framework of Bayesian approach allows for subjectivity in the choice of prior distribution. The main concern has been the relative performance of this approach especially in the areas of applications. This study focuses on the general linear regression model and investigates the differences between the Classical and the Bayesian approach in terms of model formulation and estimation procedures. The paper describes the procedure for executing Bayesian regression and the choice of the prior distribution to be employed. The Prior distribution is the degree of belief that the researcher has about the distribution of the parameter that he is trying to estimate. Non-Bayesians usually employ this information to lead them to add, drop, or modify variables in an ad hoc search for a “better” result. The Bayesians employ it ex ante in an explicit, upfront fashion. The performance of the Bayesian approach and the Classical was assessed through a series of Monte Carlo experiments. A large number of samples are drawn and the Classical and Bayesian estimators were computed for each sample. The approximate sampling distribution of the statistics were then determined. Using bias and mean square error criteria, the results showed that there was nothing to choose from when prior density is non-informative

    Novel Source of Bioactive (+) Pinitol – Senna hirsuta Irwin and Barneby

    Phytochemical investigation of ethanol extract of Senna hirsuta yielded 5-Acetonyl-7-hydroxyl-2-methylchromone and 1-O-methyl-D-chiro-inositol also known as (+) Pinitol. The structure and relative configuration of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic data, especially MS and NMR techniques. It is worth mentioning that these compounds are isolated from Senna hirsuta for the first time. This plant could be an alternative source of (+) Pinitol, a commercialized anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory agent

    On the Level of Precision of the Wavelet Neural Network in Rainfall Analysis

    This research combines the efficiency of the artificial neural network and wavelet transform in modelling rainfall.  The data used were decomposed into continuous wavelet signals on a scale of 48. Each of the decomposed series was subjected to correlation test with the original data.  Instead of using all the series, ten series were selected on the basis of high correlation with the original data. These series included CWT 1, CWT 2, CWT 4, CWT 3, CWT 6, CWT 8, CWT 5, CWT 10, CWT 12, and CWT 7 (according to rank). The analysis showed that except in extremely rare cases, all the series performed optimally compared to the original data.  The result of the study has been able to show that using the continuous wavelet transform in the ANN technique, a better performance of the network is observed
