The study examined the impact of cultural values on student indiscipline in the colleges of education in Lagos state. The study adopted descriptive survey design. All the Colleges of Education in Lagos State were the study population. Three (3) colleges of education were sampled through stratified random sampling technique (1 Federal, 1 State and 1 Private), and their Directors of the Directorate of Students’ Affairs Units. Cultural values and student indiscipline interview schedule (CVSIIS) was the instrument for gathering information from the Directors of the Directorate of students’ Affairs Units. The study reveals that, indiscipline acts barely occur frequently and the cases are reported to the Directorate of Students’ Affairs Units of the Colleges of Education in Lagos State. Examination malpractice was found out as the commonest indiscipline behaviour among the students. Over-crowded school environment and staff attitude were discovered as the factors that cause student’s indiscipline; establishment of functional counselling unit in the colleges was greatly effective in curbing misbehaviour among students. The study recommended that, students must take it upon themselves to develop keen interest and fully understand the cultural values and its divisions. College environment must be sanitised to discourage student’s indiscipline. Parents must see it as their main task to train their children, right from their childhood, in the values promoted in the society, join hands with schools when the children grow up to school age. &nbsp

The study investigated the effects of time management on the relationship between class size, global utilisation rate and students’ academic performance in public tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The study adopted descriptive research design. Its population was the seven conventional public tertiary institutions and the 4,221 academic staff and 6,6452 students therein as at 2017/2018 academic session. The sample sizes were 1,440 students and 360 academic staff after disproportionately stratifying into faculties/schools and thereafter selecting through the simple random technique. Six instruments were used to collect data after ensuring their validity and establishing reliability coefficients for two of them except for the Record Observations Formats since the data sought were already in existence in the institutions. The ‘Time Management Questionnaire for Lecturers (TMQL)’ and ‘Time Management Questionnaire for Students (TMQS)’ were found reliable with 0.749 and 0.743 coefficients respectively using the Cronbach’s Alpha test. Three null hypotheses formulated were tested at 0.05 level of significance. One of the findings was that time management has no significant moderating influence on the relationship between class size, global utilisation rate and students’ academic performance in public tertiary institutions in Lagos State (R2 ?= 0.014, F(1, 55) = 0.897, p = 0.348 > 0.05); there is no significant2 Effects of Time Management…difference in class size, time management and global utilisation rate between federal and state Government tertiary institutions in Lagos State [t(df = 58) = -1.058; p > 0.05] and there is a significant difference in class size, time management and global utilisation rate amongst universities, polytechnics and colleges of education in Lagos State (Lambda (3, 56) = 0.532, p < 0.05). It was concluded that the relationship between class size, global utilisation rate and students’ academic performance was not moderated or influenced by time management. The study recommended that academic staff should be made to strictly adhere to time and day allocated to them on the timetable by the management of their institution

NIGERIA IN-SEARCH OF DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT WOMEN

    Get PDF
Despite vast natural resources, Nigeria like most third world countries is pervaded by poor leadership, social inequality, poverty, unemployment, backwardness, corruption, shrinking economy amongst others. Hence, development has been, by a stint of logic, abysmally distant and a phantasm in the country. Considering that women in developing societies constitute more than 50% of the population, and are facilitators of economic productivity and by extension development, this study employed secondary data to investigate women exclusion in development strategies in Nigeria. Founded in the womanism theory, this sought to provide answers to the concept of development, Nigerian’s development policies and the place of women in development. The paper concluded that women have irreplaceable role to play in Nigerian’s development such as bringing the gender perspective to development. Women should be engaged as crucial partners in the articulation and execution of development policies in Nigeria. There is need for women involvement in development policies for Nigeria to be rated among developed worlds

This study described the distribution of students’ achievement in genetics concepts using Bloom Mastery Learning Model. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were analyzed. The study adopted a pretest post-tests randomized quasi experimental design. The experimental group (n = 29) was treated using Bloom’s Mastery Learning Model, while the control group (n = 30) was treated using traditional lecture method. Genetics Achievement Test (GAT) with Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of 0.802 was used to collect data. The data collected were analysed using Skewness, Kurtosis and ShapiroWilk test for normality at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that, the control group achievement was approximately normally distributed before treatment (W = 0.940; p>0.05) and after treatment (W = 0.970; p>0.05). The experimental group achievement was approximately normally distributed before treatment (W = 0.943; p>0.05) but negatively skewed after treatment (W = 0.859; p<0.05). It was concluded that, Bloom’s Mastery Learning Model has the potential to reduce the variation in students’ achievement in genetics. It was recommended among others that, teachers of biology should always use formative evaluation to identify areas where students have difficulties and provide corrective measures to help the so-called weak students to achieve instructional objectives

This study examined principals’ behavioural roles as predictors of teachers’ job performance in secondary schools in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. It adopted the descriptive survey research design, while, “Principals’ Behavioural Roles and Teachers’ Job Performance in Secondary Schools Questionnaire (PBR&TJPQ)” was used to elicit information from the participants for the study. It was face, content, construct validated and yielded reliability coefficient of 0.807 Cronbach's Alpha. The instrument was administered on 103 secondary school teachers sampled for the study. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05level of significance. Findings showed that there was significant difference in the principals’ behaviour in sharing of responsibilities among secondary teachers in enhancing their job performance in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State (F-ratio=3.093; p<0.05 ). Also, there was significant difference between principals’ behavioural supports through reward and discipline in promoting teachers’ job performance in secondary schools in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State (F-ratio=1.670 ; p<0.05). Arising from the findings it was discovered that the principals’ behavioral roles go long a long way in predicting the teachers’ job performance. Therefore, it was recommended that school principals should endeavour to support their teachers in translating the identified various educational policies, rules and regulations that guide their job performance in the school system. Doing this would make their leadership/principalship responsibilities to be lighter and to be easy in performing their daily activities better

Abstract The study investigated the effect of dietary doses of Tribulus terrestris on the sex reversal and production of Coptodon zillii fry. A total of two hundred and seventy (270) three days old apparent healthy fry of C. zillii (mean weight 0.03 ± 0.0g) were randomly selected and distributed 3 into 18 glass tanks (70x45x45 cm ) at 15 fish per tank representing five treatments in triplicate to contain T. terrestris at different inclusion levels of 0.00 (negative control), 10.0, 15.0, 20.0 and 25.0g/kg T. terrestris seeds powder basal diet and labelled (T1-T5). Areference diet contain 0.06 g/kg of basal diet of 17á methyltestosterone (MT) was also formulated as positive control and labelled (T6). At the end of the experiment, final growth weights were recorded and the carcass composition determined. Gonad squashing method involving aceto-carmine staining was used to determine the sex of the fish. Results indicated that dietary treatment with powdered T. terrestris seeds and MT at different concentrations showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in survival percentage compared to that in control group, and growth parameters were better in fish fed T. terrestris and MT treated groups than in the fish fed T1. The highest weight gain was recorded in fish in T4 while the least value was observed in fish fed control diet. All fish fed diet containing T. terrestris and MT treated groups had significantly higher male proportion than untreated group (36.2%). The percentage of male (78.5%) population in T. terrestristreatments in this study was significantly lower than MTtreated group (92.1%) and significantly higher than untreated group. Carcass protein decreased with increasing levels of T. terrestris in the diet. The study indicated that T. terrestris seed powder might be used as a potential alternative to synthetic steroid for production of all male tilapia population

    Get PDF
Environmental Statistics or Environmetrics is the application of statistical methods to problems concerning the environment. A large number of professionals and public office holders in many countries especially the developing countries have not taken enough cognisance of the use of statistical methodologies in understanding and explaining environmental processes. In this work, an attempt is made to use environmental pollution data to explain data visualization with respect to the standards by the World Health Organization and the Standards Organization of Nigeria. We also discuss exploratory data analysis and change-point detection. A water pollution example is given to show the importance of environmental statistics. Statistical models are used to explain the change-point problem. This effort is aimed at achieving some methodological changes in the approach to analysing environmental data such that statistical methodologies could be enhanced for sustainable development

A study of the spatial relationship of the structures of the head and face of the Nigerian local dog was carried out using twenty-five clinically healthy dogs (11 males, 14 females). The males recorded a higher body weight and height of right external nares (15.75±6.19 kg and 0.73±0.15 cm respectively), when compared with the females (14.5±4.38 kg, 0.72±0.14 cm) (P>0.05). Values for all other parameters (e.g. rima oris length, pinna length and width, external nares length and width, etc.) measured were found to be higher in the females, although no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) were observed between the genders. There was a positive correlation between the weight of the animal and all other parameters measured. Data obtained from this study will find application in the field of comparative and clinical anatomy, morpho-physiology and possibly evolutionary studies

    Get PDF
Collections of 14 species of rattan palms were made from forest habitats along the coastal areas and major forest zones in Nigeria. The aim was to study the leaf morphological and anatomical characters of the palms with a view to facilitating their identification. Morphological characters as well as anatomical features were examined. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated significant differences (p?0.05) among morphological characters such as trichome length, internode length, cirrus length and leaf width. Trichomes were present in all the species except in Ancistrophyllum novum Burr. and Laccosperma robustum (Burr.) [J. Dransf.] Presence of uniseriate epidermis, ergastic substances, sunken stomata and peripheral arrangement of vascular supply was noted and the significance of this is discussed in relation to the family Arecaceae. The high demand of rattan products has been a serious concern with respect to the sustainability of rattan species worldwide. Conservation methods to ensure continued use of rattan palms might be to sensitize farmers, foresters and users on the overall biology of rattan palms and their cultivation techniques
