Globalization is about an increasing interrelated and mutually dependent world. It has been perceived as an inevitable and irreversible process for world development. This study focused on the trade liberalization and economic growth in Nigeria. This research is historical hence addressed the brief historical background of Nigeria economy, trade liberalization and concept of economic globalization. It also discussed the trade liberalization and economic growth. This was highlighted in the context of Nigeria economy policy over the years with international GDP per capita. After these discussions, economic policy suggestions were made that social infrastructure that will help to remove the constraints to capacity of local industries to seize opportunities in the international market should be put in place, common front should be formed with other countries with similar needs to get the external market barriers removed, promotions of the consumption of locally produced goods through orientation and deliberate policies are required and that efforts should be made to reorganize both the agricultural and industrial sectors to make collection of taxes more cost effective. These would enhance Nigerian economic growth

The purpose was to determine the level of academic performance of undergraduates in Edo and Delta states’ public universities and to establish a relationship between time management of the students and their academic performance. Three (3) research questions were raised, one of which was hypothesized and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adopted the ex-post facto design using correlation approach. The population of the study comprised 15,906 full-time 300 level undergraduates in public universities in Edo state with 10,338 students and Delta state with 5,568 students who were admitted in the 2014/ 2015 academic session. Stratified and purposive sampling procedures were used to select 815 students which accounted for 10% of the total undergraduates (300 level) students in both Edo and Delta states. Two sets of checklists were used to collect relevant data for the study. The first was titled: “Non-instructional Undergraduates’ Activities and Time Spent Checklist (NUIATSC)”. The second checklist was titled: “Academic Performance of Undergraduates’ Checklist (APUC)”. The data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using percentage, Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient (pearson, r). The result of the analysis showed that majority of the undergraduate students in public universities in Edo and Delta states spent their time on non-academic related activities during their non-instructional time. The academic performance of undergraduates in both Edo and Delta states were generally moderate. The relationship between time management practices and students’ academic performance in both Edo and Delta states was found to be positive and significant. Based on the findings, it was recommended that university authorities should always endeavour to organize workshops on time management skills for students especially during the orientation week. University authorities should censor all non-academic programs such as religious, socio- political activities and commercial/ business engagement on campuses since academic excellence is their ultimate goal

This paper explained the role of social networking or social media in the development of Nigerian society. It did not only explain the contributions of social media to the development of the society, but also explained some of the adverse effects of social media to the society and suggested possible solutions to the problems. The advent of social media has revolutionalized the system of communication in Nigeria. It has made the creation, generation, dissemination, evaluation and feedback of information easy. The paper collected information from the internet browser, journals, seminar papers and his own knowledge of the subject matter. Social media have absolutely come to stay in Nigeria and since its benefits relatively outweigh its risks, there are some steps that can be taken by the government, policy executors, media stakeholders, social media entrepreneurs and citizens of Nigeria, to make the social media more productive in our country. The Nigerian government should come up with a body that will be saddled with regulating, controlling and monitoring social media use while formulating policies that will guide them. This will definitely curb the unreliable usage of the social media by some citizens. Service providers should strive to improve their network so as to reduce the frustration experienced by citizens when assessing the social media sites. They should also make effort to extend their reach to the remote parts of the country for all and sundry to gain access

    Get PDF
It seems that Academic Staff (AS) of the federal university is not committed to the Institutional Effectiveness (IE) because the usual penchant for core duty appears to be no longer in existence especially where some members of AS have to engage in other non-academic activities in order to meet up their needs. The IE may be jeopardized when AS are not performing their primary assignments as expected. In Nigerian universities, AS appear to pay little attention to teaching effectiveness due to high priority place on research publication for promotion and grants. Therefore, this study examined the influence of academic mentoring on IE in Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria. The study employed descriptive survey research design, while population consisted of 800 AS and 4, 533 final year students across FUTA, Nigeria. Accidental sampling technique was used to select 40 lecturers, while two of the students being taught by each lecturer were selected using simple random sampling technique totalling 80 students. Data were collected using Institutional Effectiveness Questionnaire (IEQ) and Academic Mentoring Questionnaire (AMQ). Reliability coefficient of 0.79 and 0.87 were found respectively using Cronbach Alpha method of testing reliability. Descriptive statistics was used in answering research questions while, Pearson Product Moment Correlation was employed to test hypothesis. The study revealed that level of IE was extremely high ( X =3.08) and state of mentoring junior AS was equally relatively high in FUTA ( X =2.93). There was significant positive relationship between mentoring of junior AS and IE in FUTA, Nigeria (r = (0.167), 0.025, P<.05). University management should take the issues of mentoring seriously to help in facilitating effective teaching and delivery of knowledge. All hands must likewise be put on deck to ensure that academic mentorship are encouraged and improved among the academic staff for institutional effectiveness
