    Get PDF
Events management landscape plays an important role in delivering an exceptional attendee experience, from planning to implementation and attendee’s engagement which serves as a critical success element for event organizers. Despite the increasing use of technology in event management, there remains a limited understanding of attendees' behavioural engagement in events either during or after for enhanced attendees’ experiences. This study seeks to bridge the gap and examine attendees’ behavioural segmentation using K-clustering technique for the identification of attendees’ engagement during and after events. This research aims to develop a behavioural analysis model using K-clustering techniques to identify attendees' engagement in events for improved attendees’ experiences. The quantitative research method was used for this research. The designed and model implementation was developed using Python Programming language. The results showed that the attendees’ engagement was clustered into four namely the minimally, multidimensional, highly cognitive and quietly, highly affective and socially engaged. Also, there was no string engagement in terms of the observed age or gender. The elbow performance metrics shows that the four behavioural engagement patterns best represent the data without complexities with the within-cluster sum of squares value of 171820.15 as the inflection point. The silhouette score of 0.37 indicates a decent but not perfect clustering and good enough for the earl-stage attendee segmentation and need further tuning for decision making. The study concludes that event attendees participate more in highly affective and multidimensional segments and that K-clustering technique serve as an important method for understanding both low- and high-involvement of attendees in event

    Get PDF
Monopoly is a classic board game that simulates real estate trading and economic principles. Played by two to eight players, its objective is to accumulate wealth through strategic property acquisition and development, while bankrupting opponents. The game is known for its iconic board layout featuring properties named after real streets and locations, alongside utilities and railroads. Players roll dice to move around the board, purchasing properties they land on and collecting rent from opponents who land on their owned properties. Monopoly also incorporates chance and community chest cards that can either benefit or hinder players' financial positions but all the features use in playing the game was written in English language which is a common language in a large community. However, some non-educated people most especially people from western part of Nigeria always find interest in this game but their inability to read characters written in English has incapacitate them from playing the game. To resolve this problem a monopoly game using Yoruba Language that will allow larger audience and Yoruba like to participate in the game players and to monopolize property groups to increase rental income, making negotiations and trades essential components of game play was developed. The research methodology, flow chart and the board interface system are explored. The flow chart illustrates interactions between player, color representing each player, players turn, money deduction or addition when landed on each corner on the board. The new system, a monopoly game using Yoruba Language, is user-friendly interface and the players were able to play it conveniently with no stress

    Get PDF
Most cities in Nigeria lack effective planning and management tools for the complicated problems in the city. As a result, both urban master plans and detailed plans in Nigeria fail to guide and manage urban growth effectively. Urban planning in Nigeria till present still depends on 2D plans. This partly has been due to the high acquisition cost for digital terrain models (DTMs) and 3D city models. In this paper, a 3D city modelling of Lagos Island was attempted to demonstrate its usefulness as a tool for planning and managing urban development. Using both attribute and spatial datasets, a LoD1 3D city model of Lagos Island was developed. The model showed a highly dense and complex vertical landscape. It suggests a possible future development of a vertical slum. The paper emphasizes the prospects for the development of a 3D city model for cities in Nigeria. It recommends the adoption of 3D city modelling as an important spatial planning tool for planning and managing cities in Nigeria

    No full text
This study investigated the potential of the Social Studies curriculum to address and mitigate social vices among youths in Nigeria. Social vices such as drug abuse, violence and corruption pose significant challenges to the nation's development and social cohesion. The Social Studies curriculum, with its focus on civic education, ethical behaviour, and community involvement, is uniquely positioned to combat these issues. This research evaluated the effectiveness of the current Social Studies curriculum in fostering positive values and reducing the prevalence of social vices among Nigerian youths. Through a combination of curriculum analysis, educator interviews and student surveys, the study identifies strengths and weaknesses in the existing educational framework. Preliminary findings suggest that while the curriculum includes relevant topics, its impact is limited by inadequate teacher training, lack of resources, and insufficient emphasis on practical applications. The study concludes that enhancing teacher education, incorporating interactive and experiential learning methods, and increasing community engagement are crucial for the Social Studies curriculum to effectively address social vices. By strengthening these areas, the curriculum can play a pivotal role in shaping responsible, ethical and socially conscious individuals, contributing to the broader goal of national development and social stability in Nigeria

This study examined institutional challenges inhibiting public infrastructure maintenance in the residential core of Akure, Nigeria. In the course of this study, 425 copies of the questionnaire were administered on a household basis in the residential core of Akure. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of average mean weight value (AMWV)and Likert scale measurement to determine the causes of poor maintenance of public infrastructure in the study area. Inferential statistics was used to analyse the factors inhibiting the maintenance of public infrastructural facilities as well as other information derived from stakeholders of different institutional agencies saddled with infrastructure maintenance roles in the area. People’s indifferent attitude, poor maintenance culture, aging facilities, poor response to maintenance requests, and political instability were observable potent catalytic factors inhibiting facility maintenance in the Akure core area. Pearson productmoment correlation was used to divulge the strength of association among these variables. In combating the challenges, the study recommends aggressive public enlightenment programs for residents on the need to make sustainable use of infrastructural facilities in their domain. It also suggests synergy among government ministries, corporate organizations, and residents in the form of public-private-partnership (PPP) to garner more funds for infrastructure provision and prompt repairs or replacement of faulty and aging facilities in the study area. This is considered necessary to enhance the adequate functionality of basic facilities that will make life better for the residents

Satisfaction of Commuters with Public Transport and its Implications for the Transition to Green Mobility in Ibadan

    Get PDF
Mobility is a basic prerequisite of life which is essential to human livelihoods and economic sustenance. Mobility accounts for about a quarter of global energy consumption and about half the carbon and pollutant emissions in cities and is a major contributor to environmental pollution, global warming and climate change. Limiting the impacts of mobility on the environment is pivoted upon the transition to green mobility which seeks greener environment-friendly and sustainable modes of commuting. This infers a shift from the traditional popular mode of mobility – private automotive transport (cars) or self-provided transportation – to sustainable alternatives with lower carbon footprint provided by public transport solutions. This study seeks to determine the perceptions and satisfaction of commuters in Ibadan with the public transport modes in the city with the aim to explore its implications for the transition to green mobility. Ibadan is a regional economic and administrative hub for south western Nigeria and one of the largest and most populous cities in West Africa. The study adopted the survey approach utilizing the questionnaire, key informant interview and traffic surveys as research instruments at three significant traffic nodes along the major traffic corridors in the city. Findings revealed four predominant public transport modes which are the tricycle (keke), taxi (micra), mini bus (danfo) and large city bus (Ajumose). The satisfaction of commuters with the public transport modes in Ibadan is low and the green index of the public transport is also low as the predominant modes of public transport are those on the lower rungs of the green index (taxi and tricycle). There is also a strong relationship between the preferred mode and frequently used mode of public transport by commuters. The transition to green mobility in Ibadan is dependent upon increased quality of public transport to discourage personal automotive modes and the proliferation of public transport modes with higher green index which are the Ajumose and danfo buses

The impact of residential building transformation on sustainable habitation for the populace requires empirical investigation. It is against this background that the study analyzed incidence and impact of housing transformation in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. The study sourced records of approved plans (between 2010 and 2021) from the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and 488 copies of structured questionnaire were randomly administered on residents. Data were analyzed using percentages and Mean Weighted Values. Analysis of Variance was also used to examine variation in housing transformation across spatial units. The results revealed predominant housing transformations in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area (74.67%) than Ogbomoso South LGA (25.33%) with differential pattern of 18.75%, 61.51% and 19.74% in high, medium and low densities respectively. The result of One way ANOVA (p= 0.001; 0.000) at 95% confidence level revealed that housing transformations varies significantly across spatial units. Housing transformations were reported to have resulted to high rental value (MWV=4.49; 4.32; 4.89), change in city morphology (MWV=3.92; 3.93 4.84), alteration in the physical outlook of buildings (MWV=4.16; 3.96; 4.80) and increased value of landed property (MWV=4.36; 3.81; 4.70) among others in the three density areas respectively. The study concluded that incidence and impact of housing transformation varies across density areas. In this light, the study recommends that special attention of urban planners should be directed towards preparation and implementation of development regulatory mechanism within Ogbomoso Township. Also, development control activities should be strengthened with appropriate legalisations to achieve sustainable housing development, improved habitation and livelihood of urban dwellers

Towards An Automatic Text Analysis and Summarization In Yoruba Language Using Transfer Learning Approach In Natural Language Processing

    Get PDF
Text Summarization serves is a tool which helps the user to efficiently find useful information from immense amount of information. This tool is increasingly used in both the public and private sector such as telecommunication industry, research institutes and in web-based information retrievals. Yoruba Language, being one of the three major languages spoken in the South-Western part of Nigeria and some communities in other countries like Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Togo, Benin Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, has been classified as a language in serious danger of extinction by UNESCO Red Book on endangered languages. There are not many researchworks in the field of natural language processing for Yoruba Language, not even any on text summarization, as far as it is known to this study. Some other times, when Internet searches are made on Yoruba subjects, the response obtained is loads of information, which is difficult for individuals to patiently read to comprehension. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a system that automatically retrieves, categorize and summarize Yoruba document as per users’ need. The design of the summarization system shall be divided into 3 stages vis-à-vis: pre-processing, feature extraction and summary generation stages. The developed system will read a Yoruba document which will be broken into several paragraphs using a Paragraph Segmentation module. In the Tokenization module, paragraphs will be broken into sentences in which punctuations, special characters, and digits will be eliminated in the Normalization module and finally the sentences will be broken into words. The Stop Word Filtering module will remove the stop words and reduce the text to more useful words. The Yoruba Morphology Lexical Analyser module will process every sentence to a Subject-Verb-Object pattern. Every word in the sentence will take a tag, representing its Part of Speech (PoS) position, which will be done by the Part of Speech Tagging module. The feature extraction processes will commence by using the Keyword Frequency which checks for the relevance of each words in the document by counting how many times it occurred in the document. The keyword with the highest frequency is likely to be present in the generated summary. This study proposed an extractive automatic text summarization tool for Yoruba language using Transfer Learning in Natural Language Processing. At the end of the study, it is expected that a Summarisation System would have been developed, which could be employed in generating a concise summary of any given Yoruba text. This paper also presented views on recent techniques and approaches on automatic text summarization with focus on English, Chinese, Persian, Arabic, Spanish and Hausa texts. Finally, it discussed challenges and methodologies of Automatic Text Summarisation
