Identifying Past and Current Trends in Technology Education in Finland
Technology education makes a unique contribution to the development of all young people by providing them a wide range of knowledge and skills. It has a role in shaping future debates and discourses by developing students’ technological literacy and by raising awareness of various dimensions of technology. In order to understand technology education in Finnish basic education, it is necessary to consider it within the subject of craft, particularly the domain of technical craft activities. However, the role of technology education has been and still is undefined in Finland. Thus, we need strategic planning and research in order to develop the necessary procedures and operations to achieve improvements in the future. In order to do that, the aim of this research was to identify past and current trends in technology education in Finland. This was done by observing the development of technology education in Finland’s national curricula during years 1970–2014. More in detail, a qualitative, theory-driven content analysis was performed for the National Core Curriculum for Basic Education 2004 and 2014. In this analysis a theoretical framework ‘A model for defining technology education (Parikka & Rasinen, 1993) was utilized. Based on the comparative analysis of technology education in these curricula, it seemed to be well represented in the National Core Curriculum for Basic Education 2004: craft curriculum. However, in the National Core Curriculum for Basic Education 2014 technology education was more evidently represent in science curriculum
Pupils’ Emotional Experience in Human-Technology Interactions
The experience of human emotion is a central topic in the research field of product design and human interactions. Emotions have the ability to affect pupils’ experience deeply since the elicitation of emotion has the ability to affect attention, behaviour and attitude towards man-made artefacts. The qualitative study presented in this paper is part of ongoing research intended to develop a framework for modelling pupils’ emotional experiences when interacting with technological artefacts. This paper underlines how the elicitation of emotion is itself a consequence of the interaction between the human individual and the technological artefact. These conceptualisations underline the necessity to study the attributes both human and technological artefacts responsible for the elicitation of emotion. The study presented in this paper focuses on the human element. The participants in this study were students undertaking an undergraduate programme in technical design and technology offered by the Department of Technology and Entrepreneurship Education at the University of Malta. The study reveals that 43% of the subjects are concerned with being provided proper guidance and mentoring particularly when interacting with technological artefacts which are novel to the pupils. In addition, the study reveals that the inherent simplicity of a technological artefact and the ability to provide an immediate visual feedback, as factors which contribute to render the interaction between pupils and technological artefacts more enjoyable. The results emerging from the empirical study are discussed in light of how pupils’ concerns and emotional experiences influence attitudes towards technological artefacts
Technology Teachers’ Perceptions of Models in Technology Education
In this study we investigate how 11 Swedish technology teachers perceive the use of models in technology education. Models are part of technology education in many countries even though there are few studies investigating teachers’ understanding of models as part of the subject and how models are used in education. The use of models and modelling in technology is connected to problem solving and builds on both practical and theoretical knowledge. Models could be understood as both cognitive and physical, used for describing complex artefacts and solutions as well as working with developing solutions.
Our study involves empirical interviews with technology teachers, teaching technology and science in grade 7-9 (pupils 13-15 years old). By using a content analysis, we explore how teachers perceive the use of models in technology education. The analysis resulted in two themes and five different categories used to understand how teachers perceive models. When comparing with the dual nature of models (Nia & De Vries, 2017) the Swedish technology teachers mainly relate the use of models to an intentional nature. This indicates that there are model functions that the technology teachers do not perceive at all or only perceive to a limited extent which could have a negative effect on the possibilities for pupils to understand and learn about complex technological relationships and phenomena, as well as for pupils\u27 ability to solve problems
Developing Student Agency to Support Student Application and Implementation of Design Thinking: Phase One
Student agency in education places more of the responsibility and accountability of learning in the hands of the students to significantly impact student achievement. In April of 2017, the American Institutes of Research conducted a study titled, "Maximizing Student Agency: Implementing and Measuring Student-Centered Learning Practices," whose purpose was "to identify the instructional practices that may be useful for the development of different aspects of student agency" (Zieser, K., Scholz, C., & Cirks, V., p. 1, 2018). Participants of this research study, both students and teacher, identify as part-Native Hawaiian, an underserved and underrepresented population in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers. This research study uses the findings and methods of Zieser, et al, to develop student agency as a means of supporting student application and implementation of design thinking in his/her competency-based personal student curricula. In this, the first year of a planned four-year study, researchers collect baseline data of study participants self-efficacy, perseverance of interest, perseverance of effort, locus of control, mastery orientation, meta-cognitive self-regulation, self-regulated learning, and future orientation. Additionally, it implements networked improvement community protocols of teacher promotion of student agency. Data collected from these protocols will be analyzed as indicated in the original study. Findings and conclusions from this first year will be used to adjust future years\u27 research methods
Technology Content and Concepts in Preschool Teaching – A Practice-based Collaboration
The purpose with the project is to develop a model for sustainable collaboration between preschool teachers and researchers with a focus on language for teaching technology in preschool. The aim is also to study how teaching can be planned and implemented such that children\u27s opportunities to learn technology interact with the use of technical concepts. The importance of communicating a scientific language and technical words in varied situations has been shown to be important for developing the quality of technology teaching practice as well as the children’s language skills. Language research in preschool contexts is well established, however there are few studies where language and technology are combined. This study is emanating from preschool teachers\u27 own questions about technology and language use in preschool. The project includes 12 preschool teachers, four teacher educators and researchers at a University as well as one researcher employed by a municipality. We present results from the first phase of the project which aims to explore technology content and related concepts that teachers express as relevant in preschool based on their experience. Data was collected by semi-structured qualitative, open interviews that were analyzed using a phenomenographic research approach. Focus is directed toward the technology that teachers associate with an everyday situation in preschool. We identify four qualitatively different ways of experiencing technology including exploring techniques, exploring techniques using artefacts, exploring artefacts as technology, and building and constructing with artefacts. The results also indicate that preschool teachers are aware of the importance of using subject specific concepts, however they express uncertainty about what relevant technology specific concepts are.
The Relevance of Trial-and-Error: Can Trial-and-Error Be a Sufficient Learning Method in Technical Problem-solving-contexts?
The popular problem-solving method ‘trial-and-error’ could be regarded as a low-threshold method that does not support cognitive activity. This opinion can be even emphasized by observing persons who try to find a satisfying solution by trialing with physical objects, because they may look as if they do not think at all. Regarding the trial-and-error-method in more detail, this opinion seems to be deficient. In fact, there are different variations of trial-and-error. Most of them require intensive thinking processes and focus on learning about the problem and its solution options. A pilot study revealed findings and showed that trial-and-error activities initialize important learning processes. It often occurs in several loops, especially if the problem solver is an unexperienced novice in a trial-supporting space. Students of a research-oriented course engaged 15 participants of different experience levels with an obstacle, that should be bridged over with not more than 10 sheets of paper. The analysis of the trials showed, that novices found as capable solutions as more experienced persons did. While they needed more trials, they all developed the essential idea of folding bending-resistant profiles of paper. These results prove that persons are learning while trialing
