This article presents an interview study with seven parents with migration backgrounds who have children in Early Childhood Education and Care institutions (ECEC). It highlights the parents’ experiences related to their interaction with ECECs during their first year as ECEC parents. The aim of the study is to explore how parents with migration backgrounds experience communication and interaction with ECEC staff.
The authors have executed a qualitative analysis of the research data. The analysis indicates that the parents’ experiences from their country of origin do not align well with expectations in the new home country. On the other hand, the analysis indicates that the interaction between ECEC parents and staff will improve when the understanding of the new society increases. The article highlights the difference between parents with some knowledge about Norwegian ECEC institutions before enrollment and those with limited insight. However, all of the parents enter the cooperation with ECEC institutions with little or no expectations to influence the current Norwegian system, but with a will to adapt to it. The willingness to adapt might make the parents less likely to engage with the ECEC staff. This attitude is based upon insufficient trust in the ECEC institutions and in Norwegian society in general. The lack of trust creates worries about the consequences of not successfully adapting to the Norwegian ECEC system and more specifically about Norwegian authorities’ decisions regarding deportations and family reunifications. The article points out that support from ECEC staff and other ECEC parents might reduce this anxiety and further develop the interaction.
The main conclusion of this article is that an extra effort is necessary to include parents with migration backgrounds to make sure they have enough knowledge about the Norwegian ECEC institutions to be confident about their child’s well-being and aware of their own role as an important, participating part. To ensure that this effort becomes part of the routines in ECECs this knowledge base’s implications on both the ECEC teacher education and the professional field is of importance
Diffractive Entanglements and Readings with/of Data
Taking up Haraway’s (1997, 2016) and Barad’s (2007) diffraction I, co-constituted with theory, participant, audio, text, materials, perform an embodied diffractive analysis of the data from one research study. I begin by reckoning with Barad’s objectivity in knowledge production connecting her thinking back through Heisenberg and Bohr. Then, I attend to the specific material arrangements of data production across interconnecting levels. Next, I describe a thought experiment in diffractive methodology. The result is my embodied engagement with and reading across and through the research productions to draw attention to and attend to the differences produced through various material arrangements (https://youtu.be/7JzIeiozzVM).
A sketchbook on seduction, or the urging into the Indefatigable Unknown
This paper presents a sketchbook on the concept of seduction. A sketchbook is a collection of episodic moments of musings through a particular philosophical concept. It operates between the notion of philosophy as method and issues related to the articulation of qualitative inquiry. In this instance, seduction is seen as the urging into the indefatigable unknown of the initial moments preceding inquiry. This paper proposes shifting perspective from research design to an attunement into immanence
Editorial: Thought in Motion: Erin Manning’s Imperatives for Educational Research and Qualitative Inquiry
Edit from within! Become world! Value, don\u27t evaluate! Lure the feeling! Know not what a body can do! Create with concepts! Make multiple sense! Affirm all that appears! Play the differential! Speculate! Engage relations of tension! Make the relations felt! Create degrees of intimacy! Propose! Transduce! Create affinities of purpose! Forget what you feel! Return the return! Transvaluate! Pay attention! Go to the limit! (Manning, 2008).
What does a philosophy produce? How might philosophy and methodology entangle, blur, respond, engage, interact, contradict, argue, provoke? Erin Manning’s process philosophy attunes researchers to the potential of difference. Manning grounds her philosophy in the notion that doing is thinking, that there is thought in the act, and that philosophy is an experimental practice that coexists with art; it is “pathfinding in the making” (Manning & Massumi, 2013, n.p.). Further, Manning posits that research and creation come together in their product, and the product is always ongoing, always becoming, always in process. Thought with qualitative inquiry, “the conjunction between research and creation […] make[s] apparent how modes of knowledge are always at cross-currents with one another” (Manning, 2016, p. 41)
Standing in the Midst: Intuition at the Fringes of Possible
This paper is an entry point into a different way of doing research: speculative pragmatism. Its roots are to be found in A. N. Whitehead, W. James, H. Bergson, among others. The main concept it fosters for a speculative pragmatism practice is intuition (Bergson, 2007; Deleuze, 1988, 2002; Manning, 2016). Around a discussion on knowledge, the concept of intuition is a pivotal milieu that anchors the basis for thinking-with-research-in-the-making. In the outlining of this background, the classical structure of experience is challenged. It introduces the subjective nature of the event, and shifts the role of objects, as they are normally understood
This study investigates prominent themes about newly arrived immigrant students’ situation in life and at school as reflected in interviews with four teachers in a vocational upper secondary school located in a Swedish city suburb dominated by residents with immigrant background. Foucault’s concept of power and counter-power as well as Riessman’s narrative analysis are used to discuss and analyse the interviewed teachers’ descriptions. The results highlight the power and counter-power mechanisms involved in the discrepancy between well-behaved and ambitious immigrant students and the media representations of the students\u27 housing area as criminal. The study also points to the power and counter-power relations between certain immigrant student groups with strong solidarity and other non-belonging students. There is also a power and counter-power dynamic between authorities making decisions affecting the immigrant students\u27 life situation and resistance to these decisions. The study contributes valuable information of the mechanisms involved in the lives of newly arrived immigrant young students in Sweden, with possible relevance to similar contexts in other Nordic and European countries.
Diplomuddannelse i Erhvervspædagogik: Et afsæt for udvikling af praksis
‘Development of practice’ is part of the learning objectives at the Diploma of Vocational Pedagogy (DVP). However, what is meant with development of practice is not elaborated. This article intends to illustrate what development of practice as part of the DVP might be, and what might be of significance when working with development of practice. This focus is based on the requirement to develop practice as declared in the executive order as well as experiences showing that it might be difficult for both students and teachers to work with development of practice when the term is vaguely defined.
The article addresses the issue: What might development of practice look like at the DVP? This is explored through the research question: How can development of practice be part of the master project at the DVP, and which influence do contextual and individual factors have on this process? The article is based on a qualitative study. The purpose of this study is to contribute to didactical development with the intention to support students working with development of practice. The study is a longitudinal study with an intervention on the master project, and with a focus group interview at the end of the study.
The analytical approach is inspired by Billet’s and Eraut’s research in workplace learning as well as Dalin’s work with school development. The analysis shows that development of practice at the DVP can take form as development of teaching and development of the organisation. The results indicate that these different approaches result in diverse study processes for the students, and is affected by the relationship to co-workers, managers and others. This must be taken into account in the didactical approach when supporting students in developing practice.«Udvikling af praksis» er indskrevet som mål på Diplomuddannelsen i Erhvervspædagogik (DEP).
This article explores the diffusion of trust-based management (TBM) and how trust-based management affects trust between managers and employees, as well as organizational results. The idea of trust-based management stems from reforms in Copenhagen municipality in 2012 and has since spread to the public sector in Norway and Sweden. Trust-based management is perceived by many as an innovation and as different from traditional governance and control. There have recently been some studies of trust-based management in Denmark and Sweden, but so far there are few empirically based studies of trust-based management beyond case studies. This analysis uses survey data from 143 managers and employees in public sector organizations in Norway and the article is the first analysis of the diffusion of trust-based management and its impact on organizational performance in Norway. The results indicate that there has been little change in trust-based management in recent years, and municipalities seem to have more trust-based management than central government organizations. Multivariate analyses with PLS-SEM show that increased trust-based management is positively related to organizational performance directly as well as positively related to organizational performance via trust, as expected from theory.
The article discusses opportunities and challenges related to co-ordination across governance levels. The challenge is at least threefold: partly related to the balance between continuity and change, specifically the ability of public administration to balance a stable core while adjusting, updating and reforming; partly the balance between efficiency and legitimacy, more precisely the ability to solve short-term problems in the face of crises and long-term challenges related to legitimate solutions in general and parliamentary anchoring specifically; partly the dilemma between political-administrative order in turbulent times, specifically how public institutions deal with crises and difficult problems when the relationships between problem and solution are difficult to understand and challenging to control. The article discusses these dilemmas in what is presented as a European multilevel administrative state.
