Experimenting with a Multi-User Virtual Environment for Collaborative Online International Learning: A Case Study from Ireland and Norway
This study applies Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) as an analytical lens to explore the extent to which a Multi-User Virtual Environment (MUVE) platform could facilitate collaboration within the context of the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) framework. Students from University of Limerick (UL) and Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet), used the OpenSimulator MUVE platform for collaboration. The students were divided into four groups comprising a mix of students from both universities. Methodologically, this case study is informed by pre- and post- survey data, screen recordings from two plenary sessions, as well as a final oral presentation and discussion in OpenSimulator. Findings show mixed experiences by the students and point to three pillars of project design that can facilitate CSCL: the platform, the international dimension, and opportunities for collaboration. While students reported that being represented as an avatar had some positive affordances over other video-based platforms, students also faced usability challenges with the platform. In terms of internationalisation and collaboration, students valued working with peers from another country, with their interactions mediated by a platform they otherwise would not have used. Overall, findings show that factors such as time, the usability of the MUVE platform, the assigned task, and the international dimension, are all essential considerations when using a MUVE to facilitate COIL projects
Who’s Afraid of Education? An Ethnodrama in Four Acts
Who’s Afraid of Education? is an ethnodrama in four acts based on data collected at two university colleges in Denmark. The main characters, Myriam and Mahmood, embody the collective voices of seven student teachers, all of whom were in the final year of their teacher education program at the time of the study. The ethnodrama centers on the characters’ experiences, deliberately prioritizing their perspectives over the researcher’s interpretations. The reader is invited to form their own interpretations and to critically reflect on the tension between the characters’ cultural identities and the expectations of a predominantly monocultural educational system. By encouraging a deeper level of engagement with the research findings, the ethnodrama breaks away from conventional academic writing formats, making the research more accessible to a wider audience
From Colonialism to Code: Decolonializing (media) education within digital capitalist structures
There is currently a growing debate on the hegemonic power and ubiquity of IT monopolies and the implications of digital technologies in the context of education, especially media education. The debate is being conducted under the banner of digital capitalism and is mainly framed from the perspective of the Global North regarding the consequences of global developments for the \u27West\u27. In the rare cases where a global, post- or decolonial perspective is adopted, social challenges such as inequalities are at the centre of the debate. These are framed in terms of the Global North exploiting the Global South through postcolonial dependencies, for example in the extraction of resources for technologies. This article goes beyond such perspectives. It outlines phenomena of digital capitalist power and domination in the context of education from a global, decolonizing perspective. The article primarily establishes a theoretical approach to the topic
What’s the Difference? Market vs State Alignment in the Professional Consequences of Diversity
Across the UK and industrialised West, corporate law and medicine have diversified according to gender, yet their power has moved in opposite directions. This article asks what difference diversification makes to professions and the forms of power they exercise, with diversification defined here primarily as the increased representation of women and thus quantitative change. While mainstream accounts emphasise a ‘business case’ for diversity, which is expected to deliver organisational benefits such as productivity and performance, research on occupational segregation shows that demographic shifts can reduce occupational status even when outcomes remain equal. This paper brings related theories into dialogue with the sociology of the professions, using corporate law and medicine to argue that the effects of diversification vary by alignment: market-aligned law assimilates diversity as managed legitimacy to maintain power and hierarchy, while state-aligned medicine interprets or constructs feminisation as devaluation under audit and austerity. The paper advances a framework for understanding when diversity legitimises, destabilises, or enhances professions’ capacity to serve the public good
Writing a PhD Thesis in Counterpoint to its Traditional Map: : Writing to and With Theories and Concepts Encountered in the Doing of Doctoral Studies
This article offers insights into challenges encountered in the landscaping of a doctoral thesis written in counterpoint with its traditional map. The inspiration behind the author’s thesis is a sixteen-year-old withdrawn from an English Further Education college on her first day. Consequently, the thesis troubles seemingly rigid orthodox academic structures and writing conventions, which potentially act as a barrier to learning. Animating the (non)methodological approaches of a PhD thesis written for everyone denied the opportunity of fulfilling their academic potential, this paper engages with speculative and experimental approaches to research, asking not ‘what is’, but ‘what if’
The research literature calls for effective teaching approaches that prepare students in vocational education to use and apply mathematics in their future careers. This study analyses the use of team teaching as an approach of subject integration in vocational education in an upper secondary school in Sweden. Based on a thematic analysis of interviews with mathematics teachers, vocational teachers and students in five vocational programmes, the results show that the teaching method contributes to increased motivation and workplace relevance for students, while at the same time promoting productive collaboration between mathematics and vocational teachers, which faciliates students\u27 learning in mathematics and in the vocational subject. Students described the approach as preparing them for the world of work. Different organisational conditions and the support of the management are crucial for the successful implementation of paired teaching. The study also shows that students have a positive attitude of paired teaching and want more of it. The study provides new insights into how paired teaching can be applied to support students\u27 learning and preparation for working life. Further research projects include investigating the implementation of this teaching approach in more schools to see if the results can be replicated and to explore if and how different school settings might affect the results. Karbonionbehandling: En Nødvendighet for Morgendagens Strålebehandling?
Introduction: Carbon ion therapy is an advanced and highly precise form of radiotherapy, offering significant physical and radiobiological benefits over traditional photon and proton therapies. With its adoption on the rise, there are now 12 treatment centers across five countries worldwide utilizing carbon ions in radiotherapy. Despite its promising advantages, the field faces substantial challenges due to inherent complexity and high costs, which represent the primary barriers to further implementation.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of carbon ion therapy, as well as to examine the role of this treatment in current and future cancer therapy.
Method: A partially systematic literature review was conducted using the database PubMed with the following keywords: “carbon ion”, “carbon ion therapy”, “c-ion”, “radiotherapy”, “heavy ion”, “future”, “potential”, and “advantages”. The search process took place from February 27, 2024, to March 11, 2024. Articles were included based on selected inclusion and exclusion criteria and were subsequently analyzed independently by the first and second author.
Results: The search process identified nine relevant articles that highlighted the benefits of the Bragg peak for precise energy deposition and the high LET value of carbon ions, which increases treatment efficacy for radioresistant and hypoxic tumors. Challenges such as the fragmentation tail and various calculations of Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE) need to be addressed for optimal treatment planning. Economic barriers, including high costs for facilities and operations, limit global accessibility. Further studies on standardization, miniaturization, and the clinical effectiveness of carbon ion therapy are needed.
Conclusion: Further development and research on carbon ion therapy are necessary due to its physical and radiobiological advantages, such as high LET value and targeted energy deposition. Economic barriers and uncertainties related to the fragmentation tail and RBE calculations must be addressed. International collaboration and clinical studies are crucial to assess the role of carbon ion treatment in future cancer therapy.
Søkeprosessen foregikk i perioden 27.02.24-11.03.24.
Integrating Environmental Education for Sustainability: Bridging Theory, Practice, and Political Engagement in Tanzanian Secondary Schools
This study employs a qualitative inquiry and a phenomenological case study design to critically examine environmental pedagogies within the context of Tanzanian secondary schools. The primary aim is to identify the contextual needs for reorienting education towards environmental justice through the lens of ecopedagogy. Specifically, the research explores three key aspects: stakeholders’ perceptions of the human-environment relationship, the integration of environmental education into school curricula, and stakeholders\u27 recommendations for enhancing environmental education in secondary schools. Guided by the Ecopedagogical Pyramid Framework, the study informs both data collection and the interpretation of findings. The study highlights the importance of environmental education in Tanzania, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach to teach students about environmental issues. It calls for a balance between theory and practice, focusing on practical, action-oriented approaches. The Ecopedagogical Pyramid Framework, which advocates for a balance between theory and practice, can help foster environmental competencies in secondary school students. The study also emphasizes the role of media in shaping environmental consciousness but also calls for more government resources and teacher training to ensure effective environmental education
Matsäkerhet i krisberedskapens tidevarv: Om matens plats i kommunal policy, planering och förvaltning
Food security has become an increasingly pressing issue for many developed welfare states, and the vulnerability of intricately interconnected international food systems has led researchers to highlight the importance of local food systems in which municipalities play a crucial role. Against this backdrop, this study explores how issues of food security are reflected in municipal policy, planning, and administration. In addition, it examines how food security is understood and framed more broadly in relation to a local context in Sweden. Based on an extensive document analysis, the study clearly shows that food security issues are not addressed in any systematic way in municipal plans or policies. Through participant observations, it is also demonstrated that food security issues are raised in relation to discussions on crisis preparedness. However, these issues cannot be discussed in a systematic manner, as food security and crisis preparedness lack anchoring in formal policy, planning, and administrative structures. The study reveals an urgent need for — but also institutional challenges in – managing food security in a more structured way.
The vocational training for child and youth care workers was established as a distinct educational pathway under Reform \u2794. This profession is primarily associated with the public sector, involving work in kindergartens, schools, after-school programs, and youth clubs, covering the age group 0-18 years. In line with the Norwegian school reform, Fagfornyelsen, there is an increasing expectation for students and apprentices in vocational training to lead their own learning processes. This involves reflecting on their own performance and identifying learning needs. Teachers and instructors are challenged to prepare students for complex and changing work environments using new technology.
Results indicate that the use of ePortfolio as a digital learning folder effectively bridges school-based and workplace-based training. Implementing an ePortfolio didactic can enhance students\u27 professional identity and pride, making the training more meaningful. However, this requires close collaboration between teachers and training offices. Evidence suggests that the use of digital documentation and learning tools helps bridge different learning arenas and upholds the curriculum framework\u27s principle of "learning to learn". The article is based on empirical data from an innovation and research project aimed at improving documentation and learning systems in vocational education and training, focusing on how ePortfolio didactic can be applied in the child and youth care worker training. The research method used is a design-based approach, and the design criteria are based on a technological pedagogical framework, the TPACK model. The article is based on empirical data from an innovation and research project aimed at improving documentation and learning systems in vocational education and training. It focuses on how ePortfolio pedagogy can be utilized in the field of childcare and youth work to promote coherence and continuity throughout the four-year educational program. An electronic portfolio system, hereafter referred to as an ePortfolio, is a digital tool or system used to document, reflect upon, and showcase students’ learning and development in both school- and work-based learning situations.
The field of childcare and youth work was established as a separate vocational education pathway under the Reform \u2794 initiative. Following the introduction of the curriculum renewal (2020), there is now an increasing expectation that students and apprentices take the lead in their own learning processes. This entails reflecting on their own performance and identifying learning needs. Vocational teachers and workplace mentors face the challenge of preparing students for complex and dynamic work environments, which often involve the use of new technologies. The profession is primarily linked to the public sector, involving work in kindergartens, schools, after-school programs, and youth clubs, and covers the age range of 0–18 years.
The results show that using ePortfolios as a digital learning tool effectively connects school-based and workplace-based training. Implementing ePortfolio pedagogy can enhance students’ professional identity and pride, making the training more meaningful. However, this requires close collaboration between teachers and training offices. Using ePortfolios as a documentation and learning tool bridges the gap between different learning arenas and upholds the curriculum framework’s principle of self-directed learning. Both upper secondary schools and training offices have increasingly adopted digital learning platforms where students’ individual ePortfolios are stored and further developed by the students themselves
