The Role of Data Literacy in Building Competencies for LIS Professionals
In today\u27s information-driven society, LIS professionals must possess a wide range of competencies to succeed in their roles. With the increasing amount of digital information being created and shared, the ability to work with data has become a critical competency for LIS professionals. This competency is known as “data literacy”. Our goal is to explore the role of data literacy in building competencies for LIS professionals. A mixed-methods approach was used, involving a comprehensive literature review and data collection through surveys with LIS professionals. The results of this study suggest that LIS professionals require competencies related to data collection, analysis, interpretation, and communication in order to effectively work with data. Integration of data literacy into LIS education and training programs can be achieved through various strategies, including curriculum development, training workshops, and mentorship programs. Existing data literacy programs were found to have varying levels of effectiveness, highlighting the need for further improvement. Based on the research findings, the study provides recommendations for the integration of data literacy into LIS education and training programs, including interdisciplinary course development, use of real-world data sets, and partnerships with data-driven organizations. The study concludes that the integration of data literacy into LIS education and training is essential for the success of LIS professionals in their roles and for the advancement of the LIS field. Overall, this study underscores the need for LIS professionals to possess data literacy competencies to succeed in their roles and contribute to the advancement of the LIS field
The Dynamism of Anime Images: The Case of the ‘Kanada-style’ Movement
Kanada Yoshinori is considered one of the most important animators in anime history. He turned the constraints imposed by anime’s “limited animation” techniques on their head thanks to his unique approach to drawing and timing on works such as Invincible Super Man Zambot 3 (Muteki Chôjin Zambot 3, 1977) or Galaxy Express 999 (Ginga Tetsudô 999, 1979). This paper aims to consider Kanada’s place and importance in anime history by reevaluating the role of animated movement in aesthetic and media analysis. Tom Gunning’s concept of “potential movement” serves as a basis to understand how animation works—how it is created and how it functions—and two of its central parameters, “rhythm” and “tension.” These are then used to explain the appeal of Kanada’s animation in aesthetic terms and its transmedia success in the environment of the “anime boom” of the 1970s and 1980s. Aesthetic and technical parameters can then become tools to explain the success and spreadability of certain trends and styles over anime history
Unburning: Technics of Opacity, Oversight, and the Police Surveillance State
The subject of this paper is a collection of 18½ hours of FBI aerial surveillance video documenting the Baltimore Uprising of 2015. Working from the premise that the video footage reproduces a criminalizing and racialized gaze, my analysis centers on what remains in the media if the video is absent (or abstracted): video metadata embedded within the media’s “.mp4” container during its redaction, but also “burned” onto the video image by the infrared sensor that captured it.
Even as it works to decode what these documents “speak” about the anti-Black apparatus that produced them, this paper argues beyond a forensic reading, through the lens of expertise: metadata is more than a tool for establishing evidentiary authenticity; it is also a site for creative intervention and contestation
Inclusive Media Mix: Shaping Communication through A Silent Voice
A Silent Voice (Koe no katachi, dir. Yamada Naoko, 2016) is an anime film based on the critically acclaimed manga of the same name by Ôima Yoshitoki. A Silent Voice follows the experiences of a deaf character, Nishimiya Shôko, and her classmates, particularly as they deal with school bullying and rebuilding friendships afterwards. A Silent Voice not only won various awards such as Best Animated Feature Film at the Japanese Movie Critics Award, but also collaborated with actors across the public sector such as schools, local governments, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), to enhance inclusive education in Japan. This article shifts the typical focus on media mix as a marketing strategy to consider media mix strategies as potential tools for civic and educational causes. Specifically, it explores A Silent Voice’s media mix in relation to improving inclusivity in Japanese education and society. To that end, this project begins with a brief elucidation of the three versions of the original manga, which serve as starting points of this inclusivity-focused media mix. The project then moves to analysis of how the anime problematizes school bullying as systemic exclusion and explores how sign language is presented as one key to forming an inclusive society. Finally, by introducing cases in which collaboration with the public sector distributes this anime’s characters, induces various audience desires, and mobilizes audiences to participate in social change, I argue that A Silent Voice provides an example of inclusive media mix
New horizons for academic library collection development: Creating a community curated collection through student empowerment
As the role of the academic library in university life changes, libraries are seeking ways to better engage their communities – university students, faculty, and staff. Student success and engagement have come to the forefront of these efforts. In 2019, Kent Library at Southeast Missouri State University implemented two programs to engage students in collection development. The first program enriched subject areas within Kent Library’s collection that were selected by the student body. The second program awarded grants to student groups for the purchase of library materials that supported their focus. This case study shares details of the two programs, their implementation, and the results, including the impact of student engagement in collections on student success and the creation of a community-curated library collection
Minding the Gap : Cultivating Intercultural Skills by Incorporating Social-Justice Competency in LIS Curriculum
Implementing intercultural skills and the development of cultural intelligence in library and information science (LIS) education is the first step toward promoting social justice, not only in the LIS field but also within the wider community. This action requires that LIS programs review and revise their course curricula, program content, and educational approaches to prepare future LIS professionals to recognize and fearlessly challenge social injustice. This study aims to demonstrate the importance of cultivating intercultural skills and emphasizes the need for including social justice in LIS education. A case is made for utilizing the revised ALA competencies in this endeavor. The study also demonstrates how an LIS program at St. John’s university incorporated social justice competency in its revised program goals and discusses its implications for making a meaningful change both in the profession and the wider community
A Role for Emerging Technology in Dismantling Biases in Library and Information Science Education?
When considering the implications of emerging technology in the field of library and information science, it is important to consider that the implications of future technological advancements may expand beyond simple problem-solving and task completion. These technologies possess the potential to dismantle biases and barriers prevalent in academia. Unfortunately, academia is not immune to biases and barriers, and the COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated racial and gender-based attacks. Unfair treatment can plague individuals throughout their academic journey, starting from the application process and extending to graduation. Despite universities\u27 efforts to promote diversity, equality, and inclusivity, unconscious biases persist within these institutions. While many fear the impact that emerging technology may have in perpetuating biases, these innovations also have the capacity to prioritize the needs of marginalized groups. For example, artificial intelligence and adaptive learning could help neurodivergent students by providing more individualized instruction. This idea is important when considering students’ intellectual freedom. The removal of bias and barriers could give more students the right to “receive information from all points of view without restriction” (ALA, 2007). This poster presentation explores the ways that emerging technologies, specifically recent AI innovations like large language models may help ameliorate biases that persist in higher education in general and specifically within library and information science. It presents a positive perspective on how ethical AI and responsible innovation may promote the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion on our college campuses and how we, as library and information science students and/or educators can promote these developments
Class Size Determination and Decision Making in LIS Online Education
The purpose of this study was to develop a national landscape of the decisions made by LIS programs regarding online course enrollment caps. Online education expands learning opportunities for all students and is particularly attractive to nontraditional students who are more likely to have employment and family obligations that make attending traditional face-to-face classes difficult. At the same time, online learning can exacerbate existing opportunity gaps between certain student groups, depending on how well-prepared students are for online learning. This survey methodology study investigated course enrollment caps and the reasons behind the limits placed by Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) programs nationwide, in an effort to identify ways online education structures at the University of South Carolina iSchool could be transformed to ensure a resilient future of diverse library and information science (LIS) professionals
Exploring the Impact of Ungrading on Student Learning
In most academic disciplines and schooling contexts, grading practices tend to vary by individual instructor preferences and habits. The field of Library and Information Science (LIS) is no different, with grading practices and norms varying even within a particular program. Despite these variations in assessment, a unifying factor across all fields is the understanding of learning itself, and there is a great deal known about how people learn, regardless of discipline/course/program (Bransford et al., 2000). Bringing insights from the Learning Sciences, this study aims to investigate the impact of ungrading on student learning. Specifically, we primarily employ a qualitative approach informed by a sociocultural perspective of learning and human development. Our in-progress research aims to understand how ungrading, which involves eliminating or minimizing grades in the assessment process, affects students\u27 learning and their learning experiences in the context of two IT-focused asynchronous courses in a library and information science program master’s program in the southeast of the United States. To gather insights about students’ learning experiences, data collection methods will include semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and participant observation, with a particular focus on how students’ perceptions and experiences of ungrading impact how they learn. Pre- and post-hoc tests will be used to study learning mastery of course content. The findings will offer implications for research and practice related to how to best support LIS student learning, especially within the context of online, asynchronous, higher education courses
