Overview of GOCI-II Atmospheric Correction Alogirthm and Its Calibration/Validation
Atmospheric correction is a crucial process for retrieving ocean color information at the sea surface from top-of-atmosphere measurements. The Second Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI-II), the successor to GOCI, inherits its atmospheric correction algorithm with improvements, particularly for turbid waters, by incorporating additional 620 nm and 709 nm bands. To enhance accuracy, system vicarious calibration (SVC) gains are applied using remote-sensing reflectance data from VIIRS. The atmospheric correction results after SVC are validated against in-situ radiometric measurements from various cruises and the AERONET-OC dataset.1
Characterization of metal elements in deep-seabed polymetallic nodules: A multivariate statistical approach
Deep-seabed polymetallic nodules have been recognized as a potential solution to the depletion of many metals that are produced by terrestrial minerals. Mineral resources obtained by deep-seabed mining vehicles significantly affect the economic viability of underwater mining activities. Therefore, an accurate prediction of the harvested mineral resources is significantly important. Probabilistic approach-based prediction, which enhances the accuracy of the economic evaluation, requires a statistical model of the variability of each metal element in the harvested polymetallic nodules. However, the probability distribution of the metal elements in the polymetallic nodules has rarely been studied thus far. A multivariate joint probability distribution must be adopted because the variabilities of these metal elements is correlated with each other. However, multivariate statistical approaches have not been actively studied owing to their highly sophisticated theories. The objective of this study was to establish a systematic framework for modeling a multivariate joint probability distribution of correlated random variables. A case study was performed to characterize the metal elements of the polymetallic nodules using the proposed approach.11Nsciescopu
Sesterterpenoids isolated from the marine sponge Coscinoderma bakusi
Twelve neomanoalide derivatives (1–12) and two halisulfate derivatives (13 and 14), nine of which are un- precedented (4–9, 11, 12, and 14; coscilides A–H and halisulfate 11, respectively), were isolated from the sponge Coscinoderma bakusi. The previously unreported neomanoalide derivatives show distinct features in their 6,7- double bond geometry (4 and 9) or terpenoid moieties (5–8, 11, and 12) compared to the reported ones, as elucidated using NMR spectroscopy and HRMS analysis. Among these derivatives, compounds 11 and 12 contain terpenoid moieties that are rarely found in marine natural products. The isolated compounds showed low activity against hTRPA1, six pathogenic bacterial strains, 10 cancer cell lines, except in the case of 7, which exhibited activity against hTRPA1 (IC50, 34.5 μM) and Staphylococcus aureus (MIC, 32.0 μg/mL). The halisulfate derivative 14 inhibited NO production in LPS-activated RAW 246.7 macrophage by 45% at a concentration of 10.0 μM. Although no significant activity was observed for the compounds in this study, the compounds reported herein would contribute to the chemical diversity of marine sesterterpenoids.11Nsciescopu
-Spatiotemporal dynamics of nutrients and organic carbon in coastal seawater off Jeju Island: Effects of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and geomorphic settings
We investigated the role of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in supplying nutrients and organic carbon intwo distinct coastal settings (eastern and western) in Jeju Island, Korea. In Jeju, nutrients and organic carbonshowed strong correlations with salinity suggesting that SGD is a significant source in coastal waters. Althoughboth regions exhibited similar SGD rates and background concentrations in the outer bay seawater, the behaviorof nutrients and organic carbon was different between the eastern and the western parts. Notably, in the westernpart, inorganic nutrient concentrations in the inner bay seawater were depleted compared to conservativesalinity mixing due to the enhanced biological activity. In contrast, the eastern part showed no significantchanges in nutrient concentrations along the mixing line. The western part has larger water volume, deeperdepth, and longer residence time compared to the eastern part. Our results suggest that the behavior of nutrientsin the inner bay is significantly influenced by the hydrogeological factors. This study highlights the crucial role ofthe spatiotemporal dynamics of SGD and coastal settings in governing coastal biogeochemistry and ecosystems.11Nsciescopu
Power performance evaluation of a 1 MW tidal current energy converter system installed at Uldolmok Strait
A tidal current energy converter generates electricity using a rotor with blades and a generator, harnessing the kinetic energy of tidal currents caused by tidal phenomena. Similar to a wind turbine, it drives a turbine using the flow of a working fluid. However, unlike wind turbines, whose power output is hard to predict, tidal current energy converters utilize the periodic flow of seawater, enabling consistent power generation and accurate long-term predictions. This study involved flow and integrated load analyses for the preliminary design of a 1 MW tidal current energy converter. A 3D Reynolds -averaged Navier-stokes (RANS) analysis was conducted to assess flow characteristics, employing The Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model with tetrahedral and hexahedral computational grids. Additionally, integrated load analysis using Tidal Bladed examined the power performance and load characteristics of the 1 MW converter. A full-scale converter was installed in the Uldolmok Strait, and its power performance was evaluated. The power coefficients were determined to be 33% from numerical analysis and 29.2% from field tests.11Nsciescopuskc

Host Evaluation: Reliance on Symbionts: A new metric for quantifying nutrient exchange in nutritional mutualisms
Mutualisms between autotrophs and heterotrophs that exchange nutrients are of pivotal importance in the ecology and evolution of life on Earth. However, investigation of holobiont trophic strategy (reliance on autotrophy vs. heterotrophy) is hampered by practical challenges in quantifying their diverse nutritional pathways. One prevalent solution is the use of stable isotope analysis (SIA); in particular, the overlap of the two partners in isotopic space serves as an estimate of autotrophic contribution to the holobiont's diet. Yet, existing methods are inconsistently applied throughout the literature and fail to incorporate the variation of the isotopic signal of both partners. We developed a novel metric called Host Evaluation: Reliance on Symbionts (HERS) that addressed existing limitations by (i) selecting and fitting two optimal sizes of ellipse areas and (ii) combining metrics generated from both heterotroph (host) and autotroph (symbiont) carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values into an index, ranging from zero to one. The accuracy and stability of HERS were tested with nine synthetic datasets representing diverse holobiont trophic strategies and a published empirical dataset composed of seven coral genera. HERS performance was assessed relative to other stable isotope metrics through comparison with existing literature that employed non-SIA methods. Our results identified ellipses encompassing 40% and 95% of isotope variance as the optimal sizes to include in HERS to accurately estimate trophic strategy. HERS was stable across all tested scenarios and was more consistent with existing literature than all other stable isotope metrics. Variance and accuracy greatly improved with increased sample size, with greater sampling necessary to assess the trophic strategy of holobionts that are strongly heterotrophic or autotrophic. We demonstrated that HERS is a rapid, cost-effective metric that can be used to assess diverse mixotrophic scenarios. For the first time, this metric incorporates the overlapping proportions of symbiont ellipse areas, resulting in a more relevant biological assessment. Furthermore, HERS employs two differently sized ellipse areas, providing a balanced estimate across different trophic strategies. Finally, based on our analyses, we recommend HERS users to sample ≥20 individuals.11Ysciescopu
Prototype ultrasonic desalination instrument and its performance test
A large-scale ultrasonic washing instrument was developed, and its performance was evaluated using an ultrasonic instrument and mechanical washing for desalination in sea sand. Preliminary experiments with a portable ultrasonic device confirmed that increasing the ultrasonic power intensity and application time increased effectiveness of salt washing in sea sand. On the basis of these findings, a large-scale washing instrument with a maximum output of 1500 W, an ultrasonic frequency of 28 kHz, and a 25 L capacity washing tank was developed. Parametric experiments via the developed system were performed to investigate the effects of the sea-sand-to-washing water ratio, ultrasonic intensity, and washing time on washing effectiveness. The greatest reduction in salinity was observed when both ultrasonic treatment and mixing of sea sand with water were applied. The optimal washing conditions were an ultrasonic intensity of 1200 W, a washing water-to-sea sand ratio of 2:1, and a minimum washing time of 3 min. The results confirm that the developed equipment is effective for removing salt from sea sand and that further optimization of the ultrasonic intensity and mixing techniques can increase the washing efficiency.11Ysciescopu
Molluscan Diversity in the Rocky Shore Ecosystem of Uljin, Gyeongbuk, Korea
This study provides a comprehensive long-term analysis of the diversity and distribution patterns of marine mollusks inhabiting rocky shore ecosystems along the coast of Uljin, Gyeongbuk. From August 2012 to February 2024, surveys were conducted eight times at 11 stations over approximately 12 years using scientific diving and quadrat sampling methods. A total of 124 molluscan species belonging to 45 families, 18 orders, and 4 classes were identified, with Gastropoda showing the highest species richness (79 species, 63.7%). Analysis of vertical distribution revealed distinct differences in species composition between habitats, with 29 species recorded in the intertidal zone and 108 species in the subtidal zone. Dominance analysis indicated that the periwinkle Echinolittorina radiata and the mussel Modiolus kurilensis were the primary and secondary dominant species, respectively, representing key components of the rocky shore ecosystems molluscan community in Uljin. Long-term monitoring also revealed the emergence of new species such as Turbo cornutus, Chlorostoma turbinatum, Omphalius pfeifferi pfeifferi, Lacuna turrita, and Mitrella bicincta. Notably, the occurrence of the subtropical species Turbo cornutus suggests that rising seawater temperatures driven by climate change are influencing the structure and distribution of mollusks along the East Sea coast. This study provides fundamental data on molluscan diversity in the rocky shore ecosystem of Uljin and offers important scientific evidence for understanding the long-term ecological impacts of climate change on the marine ecosystems of the East Sea.22Nkc
Environmental drivers of food material and calorie content variability of particulate organic matter in four distinct Korean Peninsula Seas
Recent studies have documented rapid environmental changes impacting biological communities, such as shifts in phytoplankton composition and size distribution, with significant implications for the nutritional quality of the marine food web. Phytoplankton-derived macromolecules, including carbohydrates (CHO), proteins (PRT), and lipids (LIP), are crucial components of marine ecosystems; however, considerable knowledge gaps remain regarding their spatiotemporal variability and ecological consequences. This study investigates seasonal and regional variations in the macromolecular composition and calorie content of particulate organic matter (POM) across the Korean Peninsula's seas, aiming to identify primary environmental factors driving these variations. Our findings highlight significant variations in POM macromolecular compositions, with CHO and LIP generally dominating over PRT across most regions and seasons, influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, nutrient concentrations, and salinity. Food material (FM), defined as the total sum of CHO, PRT, and LIP, varied significantly among regions, with the Yellow Sea exhibiting notably higher FM, reflecting elevated nutrient concentrations and productivity compared to other regions. Despite broad ranges, both FM and calorie content were, on average, were approximately 40% lower compared to values reported in a previous study. Principal component analysis and multiple linear regression analysis identified similar environmental factors influencing both FM and calorie content, highlighting the importance of regional environmental conditions. This study enhances our understanding of phytoplankton biochemical dynamics in the Korean seas and emphasizes the need for future research on size-specific FM and calorie content to better predict ecosystem responses to ongoing environmental change.11Nsci
