Mesozooplankton dynamics in the Seychelles Chagos Thermocline Ridge: Influence of upwelling and mesoscale eddies in the western Indian Ocean

    No full text
The Seychelles-Chagos Thermocline Ridge (SCTR) in the western Indian Ocean (WIO) is a dynamic upwelling system that enhances nutrient availability and supports high mesozooplankton abundance. This study examines mesozooplankton distribution along two transects (60°E and 67°E) spanning SCTR and non-SCTR regions, influenced by hydrographic features such as the Southwest Monsoon Current (SMC), Cold-Core Eddies (CCE), and the South Equatorial Current (SEC). During the boreal summer monsoon, the abundance of mesozooplankton was highest in the surface mixed layer (SML) (mean: 1,275 inds. m³), with Noctiluca scintillans ubiquitous but significantly different in CCE regions (p < 0.05). The middle layer (ML) of the SCTR showed peak abundance (962 inds. m³) at lower temperatures (mean: 17.7°C), dominated by Oncaea copepodites, whereas non-SCTR sites had lower abundances with Scolecithricella and Scolecithrix prevailing. The bottom layer (BL) exhibited high variability (mean: 57 inds. m³), dominated by ostracods and Scolecithricella copepodites. During the spring intermonsoon, weakened upwelling and dominant cold-core eddies shaped mesozooplankton dynamics, with higher abundance along the 60°E transect (mean: 297 inds. m³) than 67°E (mean: 218 inds. m³). Opportunistic Oncaea spp. were more abundant in nutrient-enriched upwelled waters, correlating with chlorophyll-a concentrations. Environmental factors such as temperature (25.3?29.8°C) in the SML and salinity (34.8?35.7) in the ML significantly influenced community structure. These findings highlight the SCTR’s role as a mesozooplankton hotspot, with its productivity shaped by upwelling intensity and mesoscale eddies. The SCTR serves as a hotspot for Oncaea spp., underscoring the importance of oceanographic variability in structuring mesozooplankton communities in the WIO.1

Legal Frameworks of the CCUS Act and International Cooperation via the London Protocol in the Republic of Korea

    No full text
This article examines the Act on Carbon Dioxide Capture, Transport, Storage, and Utilization (CCUS Act) of the Republic of Korea from the perspective of marine environmental protection and response to climate change. Although the CCUS Act establishes a legal framework for developing carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies, it provides insufficient measures to protect the marine environment. More specifically, the authority of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) is limited compared to that of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and there are few explicit provisions dedicated to marine environmental protection, and strategies for enhancing public participation and transparency remain underdeveloped. Additionally, the absence of clear standards for carbon dioxide (CO₂) stream purity and cross-border CO₂ movement fails to meet the strict marine pollution prevention standards set by the London Protocol. Accordingly, this study proposes the measures to address these concerns.11Nssciscopu

Effects of combined temperature and salinity on growth and fatty acid content of two Korean isolates of Akashiwo sanguinea (Dinophyceae)

    No full text
Two Korean strains of Akashiwo sanguinea (LMBE-V203 and LMBE-V287) were established, and their morphologies and molecular phylogenies were examined. In addition, the effects of combined temperature and salinity on their growth and fatty acid contents were examined to evaluate the value as potential source for commercial application. Morphological observations indicated that there were no critical differences in the morphologies of both isolates, and molecular phylogeny based on LSU rRNA gene sequences revealed that the two isolates are nested within ribotype A of A. sanguinea. The two isolates exhibited different growth responses to combined temperature and salinity conditions, because of possibly the differences in sampling locations characterized by of different environmental conditions. At the optimal temperature and salinity, the maximum cell concentration was approximately three times higher in culture of LMBE-V287 than in culture of LMBE-V203, and the growth rate in the culture of LMBE-V287 was also higher than that in the culture of LMBE-V203. The optimal conditions to maximize biomass for batch cultures of Korean isolates of A. sanguinea (ribotype A) were a temperature of 20 °C and a salinity of 35. Cultures of two isolates had similar fatty acid compositions, and both isolates had a moderate content of EPA plus DHA, compared to other microalgal species. Therefore, the two Korean isolates of A. sanguinea (ribotype A) can be candidates for the commercial production of EPA plus DHA. There were differences in the fatty acid contents between the cultures of two isolates exposed to combined temperature and salinity conditions. The monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of LMBE-V203 at the same salinity increased with decreasing temperature and the saturated fatty acids (SFAs) under same salinity level increased with increasing temperature, whereas no clear tendency for the SFAs and PUFAs of LMBE-V287 was found. This result indicates that the MUFAs and PUFAs of strain LMBE-V203 can be modulated by controlling temperature.11Ysciescopu

Robust daily satellite sea surface salinity reconstruction using deep learning in low-salinity coastal regions

    No full text
Spatiotemporally continuous sea surface salinity (SSS) is essential for monitoring rapid changes in the physical and biogeochemical characteristics of oceans and plays a crucial role in effective coastal environment management. Traditional physics-based SSS methods often oversmoothed salinity variations and struggle to capture sharp gradients, leading to reduced accuracy in river-dominated areas. In addition, the long revisit times of satellite data limit real-time monitoring. To address these challenges, we propose the multi-scale aware interpolation network (MAIN), a self-supervised deep neural network designed to generate near-real-time, gap-free daily SSS data without relying on future observations. The input data consisted of soil moisture active passive (SMAP) L2B swath data and the bias-corrected SMAP data that were enhanced using in situ measurements. Validation against in situ measurements and existing satellite-derived SSS products demonstrates that MAIN significantly improves salinity estimation accuracy. In the Amazon region, operational products showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.04 psu, while MAIN reduced this to 0.71 psu. In the East Asian region, the RMSE for operational products was 0.64 psu, whereas MAIN improved it to 0.51 psu. Feature representation analysis revealed that MAIN effectively captured the spatial expansion of low-salinity water over time and significantly reduced the salt-and-pepper noise typically associated with L-band measurements. These findings demonstrate that MAIN is a robust and scalable framework that enhances gap-free SSS estimation, offering new opportunities for monitoring transient oceanic processes in diverse marine environments.11Nsciescopu

Experimental Investigation on the Hydraulic Characteristics of Self‑Rotating Flood Barrier

    No full text
This study investigated the hydraulic characteristics of a self-rotating flood barrier (SRFB) by performing laboratory experiments. The SRFB is proposed as a secure solution to withstand both waves and sudden water level rise, thereby protecting the coastal area behind it. The SRFB is designed to rotate and rise automatically by buoyancy when the water level exceeds a certain threshold or waves start to overtop the crest level of the caisson, where the barrier is enclosed. The barrier begins to rise when the chamber is filled with enough water for the buoyancy force to exceed its own weight. The performance of the structure was tested under various regular wave conditions at different water depths. Pressure transducers were placed along the front face of the barrier to measure the wave pressures acting on it. The barrier’s angular displacement was also identified using synchronized video footage during the measurements. The results showed that the overall magnitude of the measured pressures increased with water depth due to the larger volume of water inflow from overtopping waves. During the rise in the barrier, the pressure profiles dynamically varied with the rotation angle as the pattern of water flow into the chamber changed depending on the test cases. Analysis results showed how the pressures are distributed along the barrier at the moment of peak wave force. These findings would provide fundamental information for estimating design wave forces on the structure.11Ysciescopu

Spatial Variations in Sediment Characteristics, Organic Carbon, and Porewater Salinity in the Jeungdo Getbol: Insights from a UNESCO World Heritage Korean Tidal Flat

    No full text
The Getbol (Korean Tidal Flats), recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, represents a vital coastal ecosystem with significant ecological and geochemical functions. This study investigates the spatial variability of surface sediment properties—precisely, sediment particle size, total organic carbon (TOC), dry bulk density, porosity, and porewater salinity—in the Ujeon tidal flat of Jeungdo, South Korea. 124 surface sediment samples were collected in June 2023, with corresponding altitude measurements derived from drone-based digital elevation models (DEMs). The results reveal that the average TOC content (0.44%; range: 0.00–1.42%) and C/N ratios (12.5; range: 9.9–30.3, excluding sandy sediments) are notably lower than those typically recorded in European and North American salt marshes. Mean particle size, porewater salinity, and altitude were measured at 4.98 Φ (1.06–9.75), 48.09 psu (0.00–93.82), and 1.27 m (-0.38–+3.15), respectively. Strong correlations (R² values of 0.77, 0.81, and 0.71) were identified between particle size, TOC, porewater salinity, and altitude. Spatial patterns highlight that TOC concentrations peak in mud-dominated zones, while significantly lower values are observed near sandbars at the tidal flat’s entrance. This variation reflects the influence of sediment grain size distribution, with finer clay-rich sediments supporting higher TOC accumulation. These findings suggest that organic carbon properties in diverse sedimentary environments of tidal flats like Jeungdo Getbol may have been previously underestimated. This study enhances our understanding of sedimentary processes in UNESCO-designated Korean tidal flats and provides a foundation for future coastal ecosystem management. The research underscores the ecological importance of protecting and sustainably managing these globally significant tidal flat systems by emphasizing the interplay between organic carbon dynamics, salinity, and sediment characteristics.1

Metabolic and physiological responses of Saxidomus purpuratus under thermal changes

    No full text
This study investigates the effects of water temperature on the survival, oxygen consumption rate (OCR), and hemolymph responses of the purple butter clam, Saxidomus purpuratus, an economically essential bivalve species inhabiting coastal sandy and gravelly substrates. Each indicator was analyzed under laboratory conditions of 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30℃. Before the experiment, S. purpuratus individuals were acclimated at 15℃ for one week, followed by stepwise temperature increases or decreases (0.1℃/h) to assess survival responses. The survival rate was over 90.0% of S. purpuratus in 10, 15, and 20°C, but 70.0% in 25°C and 0.0% in 30°C for 96 hours. Additionally, LT50 was not observed during 96 hours at 10-25°C, whereas LT50 at 30°C was between 36 and 42 hours. The OCR increased significantly with temperature, reaching its peak at 25°C. However, at 30°C, OCR declined sharply, coinciding with increased mortality and physiological stress responses. The Q10 value was highest between 20°C and 25°C, indicating the most sensitive water temperature range in metabolic activity. Hemolymph analysis revealed that GLU, GPT, and GOT levels reached maximum values at 30°C, while TG, TP, and TCHO showed minimum values at 30°C. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was also significantly higher at 25°C and 30°C compared to 10°C, 15°C, and 20°C. These findings indicate that S. purpuratus can maintain high metabolic activity and physiological resilience up to 25°C in our experimental conditions.1
